Burned

Sam was still sitting in his office.

It's eight o'clock in the evening and his eyeball hasn't moved yet from staring at the whiteboard ever since, lifting his head when he sees Dakota appear at the door.

"Dax, why don't you just go home?"

Dakota approached and looked at some of the photos that Sam and the team had arranged on the board.

He just keeps being calm and quiet, as he used to be, just observing carefully with forehead furrowed deeply, sometimes Sam has a little doubt does this young man heard him or not.

Sam came out of his desk with a plastic bag filled with a piece of a letter in the package that Dakota had received.

"Do you recognize this handwriting? This letter was really addressed to you, I'm afraid that person might still be following your every step, you should be careful Dax, I haven't sent it to the lab because I want to know what you think about this"

Dakota glanced at the clear plastic in Sam's hand, the letter with a paper in light pink base colour, the words in the centre of the paper with the beautiful hand engraving.

"Nowadays few people use handwriting, so I rarely see people around me writing."

Sam took out the paper and handed it to Dakota, taking a closer look.

For a moment Dakota read the letter carefully, his eyes played behind the frameless glasses which still showed the shape of his eyes which were quite large and long, but after a while there was a burning sensation in his hands, hot and starting to sting.

"Ach"

He tossed the paper slipped from his hand, and in an instant, some of his fingers become red like it was burning, the pain he immediately felt.

"Akch"

"Dax, what happened?"

Sam widened his eyes when he saw the surface of Dax's right palm which was like a blister, he immediately pulled Dakota's hand closer to the sink.

"What's wrong? How come it become like this?"

Dakota endured the pain, somehow but the wound suddenly came just as he held the letter, a letter that was now lying on the floor.

.....

Very quiet white room.

Sam sat beside Dakota, a young pretty woman doctor bandaged Dakota's blistered palm.

"Don't forget to take the medicine to avoid infection, the wound is quite serious, don't take it lightly," said the young doctor, after that, she lifted her head, checking other parts in case she was missing something, she brushed Dakota's forehead hair and touch it.

"You don't have a fever, that's a good sign"

Dakota slightly avoided the doctor's touch, Sam sat beside him and seemed to understand why the young man looked uncomfortable around the young doctor, she really don't hesitate to touch him here and there.

They rush to the nearest ER and the girl happens to have her shift at that time.

"Heh, how can a dangerous chemical powder be in that paper without anyone knowing, I should have known this and checked it to the lab before handed to you, heh this meant the attack is really targeting you" Sam grumbled.

The young doctor sat herself down, she was about to grab Dakota's hand but once again the young man withdrew his hand quickly, the young man's face was cold as if he didn't even want to look at the doctor's eyes at all.

Dakota grabbed his jacket over the back chair and prepared to leave.

"Come on Sam, give me a ride home"

Sam immediately followed him, in an instant the young professor was heading to the door.

"Eh Dax wait!"

The young doctor, Katrin grabbed Sam's arm before he walked away.

"Sam don't forget about the medicine, make sure Dakota takes it okay"

Sam nodded

"Yeah sure, bye Doc"

Sam jogged through the door where Dakota disappeared earlier.

"Hey, Dax wait!"

Sam followed Dakota, helping him down the lobby stairs to the parking area.

"Hey wait a minute"

Dakota slapped Sam's hand away, glaring at him.

"Sam I'm fine"

"Katrin said the drugs may contain sleeping effects, I'm afraid you'll suddenly fall, and that means I have to carry your heavy body, that's why I am concerned. And why you're so cold towards Katrin? You don't even let her touch you"

By the last stairs Dakota stopped, the drug might have already taken effect, his vision began to blur and his head get heavy. Sam came closer and supported him, this time he couldn't resist.

"Come on, I'll take you home, you're so stubborn"

"Heh, Katrin, she's the one who said didn't want to get involved in anything with me, she was the one who avoided me"

Dakota's words began to ramble, especially when he arrived in the soft seat of Sam's car, he immediately fell asleep.

"Hey, you both are the same,"

Sam reached out his hand to pull the seat belt for Dakota, his face when he was sleeping was indeed so cute, Sam put the neck pillow to support the young professor's head so he won't have any neck pain when he woke up later.

Sam grumbled as he started his vehicle, taking them out of the hospital parking area.

...

The rain fell hard, some leaving large puddles on the side of the road.

The streetlights that were lit gave only a limited view of the surrounding area, the street was already deserted by pedestrians because it was late at night.

A cold figure lay on the pavement, a young man, with a wound in his stomach area that continued to bleed even after he was no longer breathing.

Dakota was standing not far away, his whole body wet with rain and even cold to the point where he couldn't move. His right hand gripped his left arm, where his white long sleeve shirt had turned red from the blood that coming out from his wound, it had not stopped yet.

A young girl sitting huddled not far in front of the corpse, the young girl still holding a long bloody kitchen knife in her trembling hands, she couldn't move, just stuck in place unable to make any movement after she with all her might stabbed the young man's stomach who was now lying stiffly on the ground, his eyes still open wide as he saw his soul flying above him leaving his cold and lifeless body.

Only the sound of muttering could be heard, the girl with shoulder-length curls was like a shock, dropped by a knife whose blood was almost lost in the rain.

"No, it wasn't me, wasn't me" she was in shock, her eyes wide as she stared at the stiffened body in front of her. Pulled her legs and curled up, she was unable to cry, like all her tears may no longer be meaningful in the middle of the rain that's keep falling.

Sirens soon flashed in the area of the incident.

Several officers approached quickly past the Dakota and immediately approached the girl and restrained her.

"Dax!" Sam appeared among the cops who came, and ran quickly as he saw Dakota standing there, he checked on him who still stood rooted to the spot, his eyes staring blankly.

"Dax, Dakota!" He cried to wake up Dakota who instantly fell limp in his hands.

"Dax!"
