Chapter 5: Crow Family

"Umm, I don’t want to be rude but, there must have been some kind of mistake, Ms. Scarlett. My name isn't Mr. Crow. My name is Sett Crossword. I came from the Crossword family of Darian City. I don't know anything about the Crow family, so can you please let me go?" Sett blurted out nervously. As much as he wished to spend more time with Ms. Scarlett, he had to leave, in fear of what this group of strangers would do to him?

"Don't be nervous, Mr. Crow. Rest assured, we aren't a hostile group. I was sent by the Crow family to be your aid."

"Then there must be some kind of misunderstanding. Why do you keep insisting that I'm Mr. Crow? " Sett smiled warily.

"Because you are." Scarlett confidently said. The look on her face implied that she was absolutely certain of it. Sett's mouth twitched. Was this lady toying with him?

They should have investigated him first before jumping to conclusions that he is the so-called "Mr. Crow" or something.

He took a deep breath as it was already past seven o'clock and his sister at home would be worried sick about him.

"If you don't stop the car, I'll call the police." He put on a threatening face to look more convincing while taking out his phone from his pocket. But he started panicking the moment he saw Scarlett replying with a smile without any sign of concern.

"You and the president look very identical, Mr. Crow." Ms. Scarlett smiled faintly, then began flipping through the documents on her lap.

Suddenly, Ms. Scarlett's face shifted into a more serious look and her voice became solemn. "Sett Crossword, the young master of the Crossword family, or should I say former young master. Since you were exiled from the family and stripped off the title as the family heir, therefore you are now considered as an outsider of the Crossword family. Your parents also experienced an unfortunate accident recently. According to the reports, everyone calls you incompetent and overwei- ahem, let's proceed to another file. At the age of eighteen, you married the Laurel family’s third daughter and became the son-in-law of the Laurel family. Yet for some unknown reason, they suddenly changed their mind. From people's speculation, the Laurel family wanted a divorce."

Sett's face turned green. “Did you guys just abduct me to insult me? Are you guys that bored to  the point you would go this far just to make fun of me like this?"

While he was rumbling, he suddenly thought of something. "It must be my Aunt who ordered you… No, that's impossible. She won't be able to afford all these luxurious cars, and all these foreign men."

Everything was confusing, and he was already out of options. Earlier, he had considered tackling Scarlett and using her to force the men in black to let him leave, but he had a gut feeling that if he did that, he would regret it.

Also, based on his observation, he could immediately tell that Ms. Scarlett was no ordinary woman. She must have trained her long, slender legs because they had toned muscles.

"If you don't let me out right now, I'm going to kill myself!" Sett felt idiotic just by saying that. Only a lunatic would use his life as collateral, but he had no other options.

Since these people seem to be after him, and it looks like his identity was important to them, Sett found more resolve with the option he chose. He gritted his teeth in preparation to bash his head on the car’s glass window.

Ms. Scarlett’s calm demeanor suddenly shifted as her pupils dilated in her hurried response to  stop Sett's idiotic actions.

"Don't do anything stupid alright? You win, Mr. Crow. We will let you go, but please cooperate with us first." She cracked a wary smile while raising her hands in surrender.

'That actually worked?' Sett thought to himself.

"An apology would be a nice way to start this thing." Sett was still holding a grudge.

After all, it did hurt his feelings that the Laurel family was planning to divorce him, even though it was merely a speculation.

"I sincerely apologize for everything I said earlier, Mr. Crow. It was my mistake. Will you please forgive me? Please?" Ms. Scarlett steps forward, just a breath away from him. Her ocean colored eyes gazed at Sett like a puppy begging for food.

"A-Alright. Apology accepted." Sett felt flustered after seeing Scarlet’s act of apology.

Ms. Scarlett smiled and proceeded to sit back down, she then opened a box she was holding earlier and presented it to him.

Sett's eyebrows almost hit each other as he saw the content of the box. It was a cellphone that he couldn't recognize, but he was sure that this was no ordinary phone.

Just then, the phone rang. Sett was skeptical about the whole situation, but he still answered the call anyway.

"Hello?" Sett said over the phone.

"My grandson!" An amicable old voice could be heard on the phone. "Grandpa misses you...."

Sett's eyes twitched, despite him being clueless about everything, he didn't interrupt the excited old man who continued speaking on the phone, like some kind of chatterbox.

"My grandson, I’m so glad I finally got to hear your voice... Although it's only through the phone, but don't you worry, Grandpa here has a very special gift for you. My secretary will give it to you later."

"I-I appreciate the gesture, but I don't really ne--" Sett tries to speak but gets caught off.

"Now, now. Don't be hasty in denying my gift for you my boy, as this is your only way to help your adoptive parents in the hospital. Though, you don't need to worry about that anymore. Grandpa already got everything covered! And what's more important, is that you are going to inherit the Crow family business in the near future! Aren't you happy?! I'll provide everything you need so that you'll be running our family business like a real Crow, my grandson!"

Pah! Does this old man think I’m an idiot? Does he think I would believe everything his old a*s is saying?

"Who are you trying to trick, old man? What do you mean, I'm your grandson? I don't even know you! There is clearly a misunderstanding here. My last name is Crossword. My father is Charles Crossword and my mother is Isabella Crossword, so it's impossible for me to be your grandson!" Sett explained that he didn't have any intentions of allowing this misunderstanding to continue, as that would result in more complications.

There was a long silence before it was broken.

"Looks like Jane hasn't clarified everything for you, hasn’t she?" The old man's somewhat tired voice could be heard on the phone.

Sett glanced at Scarlett. Her expression was unreadable, but he quickly dismissed such thoughts as he noticed her palm slightly trembling.

"My boy, your biological father's name is Mathew Crow. He was supposed to inherit the family business. But alas, he succumbed to a severe illness...." The usual cheerful voice of the old man turns into a downhearted one.

"...At that time, your mother was also giving birth to you. However, because of the grief after losing her husband, she soon followed your father in the afterlife. If you’re still having doubts about everything I said, I've got something for you to watch. Jane, please give him the video recording."
