Afraid? Why? 2

Onyx, a humanoid creature that was 8 foot tall. It has long pair of arms and legs, it can also be considered like the slenderman but instead of his face being white, this creature has long sharp teeth, and has deep green eyes. It's body were made of roots, and the cloak it wore was made from a fine leather.

The Onyx was also considered as one of the myth that came originally from the real world, as this creature was also called to be one of the guardian of the forest after the Dryad.

A Dryad, or you can say as the spirit that was residing within the forest was like an Onyx. But, unlike the Onyx that was relaying on it's physical body as a protection or weapon, the Dryad was more relaying on mana, whilst it's soul was residing inside one of the tree.

There are ten mythology that was involved in the novel in total. From weapons, armor, creatures and even island. The Onyx is one of them so there's only nine for us to uncover.

In the novel, Arthur will uncover the nine, involving the Onyx in front of us right now. While the last one was still missing.

Why did it came here? What was it's reason? I'm not sure, but all I know is that this humanoid creature has it's own reason to get involved on the both of us.

I guess this is it...

The Onyx extended it's hands towards us. Alicia and I both closed our eyes and let the Onyx gets us.

But....

Shuop-!

Something unexpected happened...

"Huh?"

The hands of the Onyx never came. Instead, when I opened my eyes to look at the creature, I could only sense one thing.

It was Fear...

"Afraid...? Why?"

I couldn't comprehend any kind of reasons of it getting scared, but then again, I noticed that it's eyes never left us... No, more specifically, never left my direction.

"...."

And just then, both our eyes finally met.

I tried to move slightly to see what it'll do next, but when I did, the Onyx flinched and backed away from us.

"....?"

To test some of my theory, I then tried to stand up, however, Alicia was clutching on my sleeves tightly. She didn't let go even when I tried to shrug get hands off.

"Ali-"

Before I could even call out to her name, I noticed that the Onyx had suddenly disappeared. This caught me off guard, of course, but I didn't let it bother me much as I turned to focus my attention back to Alicia.

"Alicia, you can let go now."

Slowly raising her head up to look at me, the hands began to loosen it's strength little by little. Seeing her teary eyes, I tried to reassure her by patting her head as a reward for saving our butts from the bandits earlier.

I was about to speak when suddenly my right eye suddenly began to ache.

"Argh!"

I let out an agonizing scream as I covered my right eye using both of my hands because of the pain.

If I was going to explain my experience, all I can say is that my eye felt like it was being drilled inside, while it's pupil felt like it's being carved using a toothpicks... Honestly, it hurts like hell that it almost made me say "I want to die" out loud.

"What the heck is happening..."

Just after I said that, I passed out. Alicia, who saw this, panicked. She was so worried that she began to cry.

"Athan..."

.....

Without realizing it, the Onyx from earlier, was watching from a bush not far from their direction.

"Rrr....."

Alicia looked at the direction of where the noise came from and noticed the Onyx.

"Ahh—"

Before she could say something, the Onyx stood up and turned it's head to leave three alone. Without looking back, it left to continue to wander around the forest.

...

..

.

After for about an hour, Athan finally worked up...

"Haa... What happened?"

Lifting my hands to cover my ears, I thought back about what happened earlier. After for about a minute of thinking, a certain scene appeared on my mind.

...so that's why, huh.

"Athan!"

Noticing that I was awake, Alicia immediately jumped and hugged me tightly.... It was so tight that I was having a hard time breathing.

"Alice-"

Cutting me short, Alicia spoke, "Idiot..." Her hug momentarily lost it's strength, my breathing began to go back normal.

I turned my head to look at the ground and apologized, "I'm sorry..."

...It was quite a genuine apology.

I couldn't understand why I can't look at her straight in the eyes. Though, I think none of that matter considering from our current situation right now.

"Don't do that again."

"Yes..."

"Good."

And then, silence shrouded the place.

This lasted for about a whole minute. None of us said a thing, I just kept my mouth silence. It was only until finally, I remembered something that I wanted to ask earlier.

"Alicia, if I may ask, can you tell me more about your father?"

It wasn't that I don't know anything about him, the sole reason I asked this question is merely out of my curiosity.

Alicia pushed back and answered my question hesitantly, "He was a... good person."

"..."

She continues after a brief second of pause, "Although he knew that he'll die if he decides to stayed behind, he stayed knowing that the family of his killer will die in exchange of his life."

"He knew?" I asked, tilting my head to the side. 'This information wasn't written in the novel...'

"Yes... My father... He was naive, honestly, I got my naivety because of him. Because of his influence, his dream...."

'A dream that all races will coexist in the future.'

...Which will inevitably won't come true.

"Even though he knew that this dream is impossible, he just kept on believing. So, I decided..."

Tilting my head to the side, I asked in a curious tone, "Decide what?"

We both looked at each other eye, I could see the determination of her just by looking through her her expression. Her emotions were overwhelming that I'm somehow getting swept with it.

"I'll inherit.... I'll continue his will whatever it takes. I won't give up until I succeed it."

...This kid.

"Well then, I'll make a promise to you, too."

The hell am I saying...?

"A promise?" Her eyes remained fixed towards mine, her confusion being visible.

"No matter what it takes..."

I took a step and grabbed her two hands.

"Fate..."

I noticed her eyes shining as the sunlight slowly lifted, her mouth was slightly opened and her face were blushing.

"Sacrifice..."

Her body twitches as she swallowed her saliva.

"Even if it means changing the universe itself..."

"...Athan!"

Just then, we both heard my mother's voice calling out my name from the nearby distance... I guess they finally found our tracks. However, we deliberately ignored this as we focused on this very moment.

...It was a moment that felt like eternity.

"I promise that I'll help you achieve your dream."

And so, the contract had been made.
