Chapter 4: “The System”

The place was a small town called Avalon. A separate region that was not incorporated with the empire or other large regions.

Based on historical records, the city used to have its own empire. Still, it had to collapse due to their territory which was always flanked by other large territories, making Avalon City one of the battlefield areas. Not to mention that the place is often a stopover for monsters. The city area is not far from the famously dangerous dense forest.

But even so, Avalon still stands, and its government and people still exist and support the progress of the small city every time it must be destroyed due to the effects of war or attacks from monsters. It even established a cooperative affiliation in politics and business with the nearby city of Tangier.

Tangier was a city within the large territory of the Emerald Empire. Although the two cities often transacted in politics and business, the distance between Tangier and Avalon required months of travelling.

The remaining city of Avalon today stands only through a simple stone barrier that separates their territory from other empty territories, as well as the distance to the wilderness. The small city only had a population of about tens of thousands of people whose only professions were orchardists and blacksmiths. Food and clothing were also quite difficult to find in the small city because the geography of their territory would always be affected by war.

Although the city of Avalon was quite small, they were actually quite strong militarily, which was the reason why the city survived, even though their territory was often destroyed on the battlefield. There were about a hundred people in the military unit, ten of them being the most vital in ensuring the city's stability. The blacksmith craftsmen there were also among the best in class. The leader of the small town was the most powerful person with a level of five hundred.

After a fairly long journey, Ares finally saw the small town's boundary wall.

"This seems to be the city those people were referring to," Ares said.

After arriving at the city gate, Ares was subjected to a very strict inspection and an interrogation process regarding military matters before he was finally cleared and allowed to enter.

"There are no identity checks like passports or tickets here," Ares muttered.

"What can I expect from a small town like this anyway?" Ares mused as he began to walk around the town.

Along the way, Ares didn't see anything interesting about Avalon City; he didn't even find any inns or eateries to stop at.

"This condition is much worse than I imagined when I wanted to rest peacefully."

Ares could only keep walking and hope to find what he was looking for. However, Ares never crossed paths with other pedestrians. As a result, Ares could not ask anyone.

When the sun was about to set, Ares, who was starting to feel tired, decided to visit a house with a plantation and a front area where he could rest. Ares looked up at the twilight sky while trying to understand the situation at hand.

Ares looked at his surroundings, which looked unkempt. "What exactly happened to this area? It's not much of a city, yet it feels so deserted."

"Do you feel lonely?" A voice appeared inside Ares' mind and took him by surprise.

"Who just whispered in my ear? Could it be a ghost?" Ares looked around, hoping to find the presence of someone other than himself.

"Sir, I am not a ghost. I am the system in your body. You have been using the system features, but the voice command menu will be activated when you reach level 100."

Ares was even more surprised when he heard the voice inside his mind. "Huh? System, when did the synchronisation process happen?"

It was hard for Ares to believe that there was something foreign about him. But after experiencing many events that could not be explained by logic and the abilities he navigated during his time in that world, Ares finally believed.

"Sir, you don't need to feel confused. I am here to help you, sir. The Creator sent me as a righting of wrongs, given that your death came sooner than the stroke of fate's pen."

Ares was constantly surprised by the system's explanation. But now Ares began to understand why he was stranded in this world while Ares had died on the battlefield in his previous life.

"Looks like the glitch in the matrix is indeed the real thing," thought Ares, remembering the sequence of scenes he experienced.

"System, then help me become strong as quickly as possible. I must at least survive and must not waste my life here," Ares said.

"Sir, you need not hesitate; I will help you become strong because I am here for that."

Ares idly voiced the idea in his mind. "Then make me strong this time."

"Of course, I can do that."

"Analyse the surrounding area!"

"RING! There is a magical fruit in the plantation ahead."

"Master, you just need to take and eat that fruit, and you will become a master of the fire element."?

"Become a master? What kind of power increase is that?" Ares asked out of curiosity.

Suddenly, a menu with detailed information appeared in front of Ares.

[The power of the fire element has five levels. The first level is the red fire element. At the second level, the destructive power of the blue fire element is twice as strong as the red fire element. At the third level, the destructive power of the purple fire element is twice as strong as the blue fire element. At the fourth level, the destructive power of the black fire elemental is twice as strong as that of the purple fire elemental. Level five, the destructive power of the white fire elemental is twice as strong as the black fire elemental."]

Ares didn't care how terrifying the fire elemental was. Right now, all that was on the man's mind was how he quickly became strong. Once again, Ares called out to the system. "System, how much of that fruit should I eat to increase my fire elemental power?"

"Sir, you only need to consume four fruits. But in this world, it's rare for humans to increase their fire element. Because if someone could, they would be limited to the blue fire element level at most."

Ares didn't care how much his fire elemental enhancement was. Even if it was only up to the blue flame level, at least Ares could kill monsters or monsters with twice the power level.

After upgrading his fire element evolution, Ares already had an idea of how strong he would be.

Ares then immediately stood towards the garden in front of him to eat the fruit shown by the system.

"Sir, you can only consume four fruits. If you consume more than that, then you will explode afterwards."

Ares shuddered in horror. The man had thought of eating as much of the fruit as he could to strengthen his strength. But it was clearly the wrong idea.

"Thank you for warning me. Otherwise, I would have wasted my second chance at life."

"Master, you don't need to thank me because it's my duty. Instead of thanking me, you'd better find the whereabouts of that fruit and consume it."
