The Real World

Stephen groaned as he turned off the alarm of his phone.

It was day fifteen since he left his identity of Stephen Cho behind to be Stephen Sy, and last night had been another unpleasant night after the previous one.

In order to be truly independent, he started to search for a job the moment he was settled in his new place.

At first he was picky, searching only for jobs that he felt was proper for the former heir of the Cho family, but he found no such luck. As a matter of fact there were even several instances where people laughed at him because of his crazy expectations.

It was either he wanted too much pay or he didn’t have the proper qualifications. He also soon learned that the good jobs were snatched up by those with the proper connections, one that he was now lacking.

That’s how he landed his current one, he had to look at jobs with lower requirements, ones that would accept someone like him, someone with no experience at all.

“Yeah?” Stephen asked as he answered his phone. It was his boss at the local bar calling.

“Come in two hours earlier, we have a party for some rich spoiled brat getting accepted to his dream university. Should be wild, should have good tips too.” His boss, Charlie Wen exclaimed over the phone.

Stephen frowned at the mention of a rich spoiled brat getting into university, that should be him, but here he was, working and waiting for his chance.

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll be there in a bit.” Stephen said as he checked the clock, he had about thirty minutes to get from his apartment to the bar.

“Great see ya!” Charlie Wen said as he dropped the call.

As much as he hated serving drinks and cleaning up vomit, Stephen couldn’t help but be thankful for Charlie Wen. The man had gambled when he hired him.

Charlie knew that Stephen had no work experience at all and yet he was willing to take a gamble in hiring him.

At first Stephen had been disgusted by his job, but Charlie chose to ignore his complaints rather than to fire him.

When Stephen arrived at the bar it was already eight in the evening, normally the bar would be dead at this time, but today it was already buzzing with fresh out of highschool, barely legal kids.

“Ah right on time!” Charlie Wen greeted Stephen as he entered.

As usual, Charlie was wearing a plain white shirt and casual jeans with his blond hair unkempt. He looked like simply an older customer that knew all of the staff, when in reality he owned the bar.

“I told you I wouldn’t be late.” Stephen said grimly as he looked at the kids his age who were busy having the time of their lives, drinking and getting drunk.

“I know you’re their age, but you seem like you’ve gone through more.” Charlie casually commented as he combed his finger through his hair. “Anyway, most of these kids are having their first taste of alcohol and you can tell. Make sure they don’t go too far, yes?”

Stephen had no choice but to nod.

At first it was all peaceful with the guests and the celebrant drinking and dancing to their heart’s content. But as the night dragged on and the drinks kept flowing, the guests got wilder and wilder.

“You, poor boy!” The celebrant, who Stephen learned was called Emerson, shouted as he waved for Stephen to approach.

“Yes, sir?” Stephen did his best to hide his displeasure at being at the beck and call of people who should have been less than him.

Emerson and his friends were laughing when Stephen approached, one of them dropped a coin on the ground.

“Pick it up.” Emerson commanded Stephen as his companions tried to stifle their giggles.

Stephen already knew that Emerson and his friends had something sinister planned.
