Christine

Clip Clop..

Dusk fell, as a pair of stilettos strike the floor with a loud tap; a feminine figure strode elegantly out of  Olive Hospital.

"You ready to move?", a masculine voice spoke for a cyber jeep fashioned like a lambo truck, parked at the lot.

"Yeah"

Dud..

She entered the vehicle slamming the door.

"This is dangerous y'know", the male warned, looking her directly into the eyes.

"Are you ready?", he asked, seeking assurance.

"Ready or not, we're doing this; so start the car", she replied, averting her gaze as she looked forward.

"Alright, let's do this", he said, half smiling.

Vrr..

The vehicle roared at ignition, as he pulled into the road; with night fast approaching.

....

"They're moving out boss", a voice anonymously reported.

"It's time to clear out the farm..", a voice spoke through the comms.

"Yes boss", came the reply.

Crack!!

"Boss orders; eliminate the targets", he said, cocking a carbine rifle; while dishing orders to the rest, at the rear of a van.

"Get ready ladies."

"Move out!'

Vrrr..

A black cyber van revved to life at the hands of the driver, as it came into view.

Skrrrrt...

It skidded into the road at high speed, in chase after the jeep.

....

"She's really scary y'know", the male spoke up, as they zoomed past high rise buildings and vehicles on the highway; the night lights giving a aesthetic scenery, as neon lights and headlamps coloured the city.

"So I heard", she replied, flashing a quick smile at him.

"The rumors are actually true, coming from me who's met her in person", he added, with a stern look.

"I'll be fine Flint", she assured, briefly tapping his shoulder.

"Just be careful Christine", he said literally worried.

....

"We're within range sir", the driver announced, as a large bridge came into view; the chased vehicle in front, as the van's headlights shone like the eyes of a looming beast.

"Time to turn up the heat ladies", the captain said, as the upper hatch of the vehicle opened.

"Nice vie—SHIT!!", Flint cursed, as the corner of his eye caught the image of the van; with a figure armed with a gun at the hatch of the vehicle.

Boom!!

He swerved the vehicle to the right, as the missed shot hit the front wheel of the vehicle at his left.

The vehicle twisted and turned, eventually bashing into the side of the jeep; smashing the side mirror.

"What the fuck was that?", Christine said, trying to recover from the shock of the sudden event.

"We're about to be hung out to dry", Flint said, while maneuvering the car.

"What?!", Christine asked in confusion.

"We're on someone's laundry list", Flint said hastily, while trying to maintain control of the vehicle.

Bang!!

"What does that even mean?!", Christine barked back, as she reflexively duck, a shot missing the vehicle, hitting a truck on the bridge; causing mortal damage to the driver.

"Down!", Flint ordered, simultaneously pushing Christine's head down.

Brrrr...

Crash!!!

Bullets smashed through the rear shield of the jeep.

"What the fuck is happening Flint!!", Christine screamed.

"We are on a hit LIST!!", Flint screamed at Christine.

"We're on someone's fucking hit list, Christine..", Flint said gloomily, as he refocused his gaze on the road.

"Buckle up, this gonna be one hell of a rough ride", he said, not averting his gaze from the road.

Click!

Christine sat up straight buckled her seatbelt.

Vrrrrr....

Flint slammed the gas pedal, as the engine roared hitting several revolutions per minute; increasing its speed.

They zoomed across the bridge, whizzing past several cars; van closely chasing behind, firing rounds at their vehicle.

Hoonk!!

A car honked, as they breezed past it; the van not relenting its chase followed behind.

Click...

Flint reached out and clicked a button on the dashboard; a whirring noise emanated, as a drawer opened up beside the handbrake, revealing a LK24 assault rifle.

"That should slow them down", Flint said, give a side nod to Christine.

"Arrgh...I'm a nurse Flint, not a murderer", she said rolling her eyes in disgust, as she picked up the weapon.

"Are you?", he said with a chuckle, as he made another dangerous swerve, missing a bus by an inch.

"Get them girl, before they get us", Flint added; his motivation full of sarcasm.

"Shut up Flint, I'm trying to aim; moreover it's dark..", she barked at him, as she popped her half body through the window, aiming for the shooter at the van's hatch.

Grrrr....

Cartridges littered the express with resounding clinks, as she fired rounds back at the truck.

The exchange of fire went on for about ten minutes, while Flint tried to maintain control of the vehicle to the best of his abilities, amidst the chaos.

"We need to shake them off our ass Christine", Flint spoke up.

"That's what I'm trying to do, dummy", she spat back.

"It would be better if it's done quicker", Flint pressed.

"We're almost at the end of the bridge", he added with a sense of urgency, as the end of the bridge came into view.

Tuh Tuh Tuh..

Three carefully taken shots went through the driver's head, after piercing the windshield of the van.

"That's how you do it", she gleefully commended herself, as her remaining shots met the shooter at the hatch in the chest; leaving the careening van, as she took her seat.

"What are you? A woman?", she reprimanded Flint, as she settled into her seat.

Click...

Her seatbelt buckled in.

Flint grinned and shook his head in response, his focus still on the road; as the battle damaged jeep made its way to the end of the bridge.

Scratch paint, bullet holes, a broken rear shield and rear lights, and a smashed side view mirror, rolled down from the bridge.

"Longtime I had some action", Flint said, inhaling the carbonized air.

"Yeah chicken", Christine added, causing to choke; as he spurted and coughed.

"You know how much I hate violence right?", he said, almost apologetically.

"Well, let's hope the rest of the journey is a walk in the park", Christine voiced out, as she returned the gun back to the drawer; casting a quick look at Flint.

...

"Ugh...hmm...shit..", a figure covered in somewhat military clothing moaned, as it crawled from underneath a totaled van; bruises and blood visible, his gesture hinting a broken arm.

"Status report soldier..", a voice requested through the comms.

"Targets on run, Operation Alpha failed sir", he replied with a dejected tone.

"Operation Beta has been set on motion, I'm sending reinforcements your way", the voice said.

"Don't let them escape this time."

"Dead or alive, bring them to me."

"They mustn't reach their destination..."

"Don't disappoint me soldier..", the voice ordered, as the conversation ended with a beep over the comms.

...

"Y'know Christine? Things are going too—

"Don't jinx it Flint...I know what you wanna", she said, interrupting him.

"Yes, we have to be very careful now", she added, as Flint diverted into an off-road route on his right.

....

Vrrrr.....

A black Chevrolet jeep arrived at the bridge, alongside five jeeps and two vans; a man alighted from it, holding a M13 assault rifle.

"Reinforcements are here Cap", he said, giving a salute.

"Medic!!", he hollered, beckoning on the medical team with a fashion urgency.

Medical personnel rushed out from one of the vans, rolling out a stretcher.

"Ah....", he sighed in relief, as he laid on the stretcher.

"Start the chase soldier, before the targets get too far", he added, as he was wheeled into the van.

"All vehicles follow my lead, we move out now; Captain's orders", he ordered; cocking his gun, as he returned to his jeep.

"Luckily I know a shortcut..", he muttered to himself, grinning as he entered into the jeep.

.....

After what seemed like thirty minutes drive, Christine finally spoke up.

"Y'know, I thought this was going to be a smooth ride; I wasn't ready for all this night drama", she said, making efforts to adjust her messed up hair; using the side mirror.

"But in honesty, you miss the fun and rush; right?", Flint smiled as he spoke.

"Yeah... Hey Flint, were there this many headlights at our back?", she said, reporting her observation to Flint.

"No...", he said.

In an instant, his eyes widened in horror at realization; seeing the looming headlamps.

Instinctively, he pressed hard on the gas pedal; rocketing the car forward.

"I knew reinforcements would come", Flint said, gritting his teeth as he fidgeted on the wheel.

"Ever wondered how they caught up?", she asked; yanking the rifle from its drawer.

"They must have known a shortcut", he replied; performing a drift, as he hit a hard left turn.

....

"Light them up ladies", came the order, as heads popped out of windows, cocked guns; aiming for the target.

Grrrrr.....

Bullets rang out, as gunfire illuminated the night.

Smash!!..

A round shattered the last side view mirror of the car; while the rest of the pellets, damaged the trunk of the vehicle.

...

Crack!!

"This should slow them down", she said, cocking the rifle with a loud crack.

"Flint..", she called sternly.

"Yeah.."

"We both know this car can't take anymore damage, so I need you to focus on getting us out of this situation; and please, stop with the fidget, it's creepy", she said, popping half her body through the window to provide cover fire.

"And you, focus on not getting killed", he replied, grinning broadly; as sweat dripped down his face.

"Why, 'cause you'll miss me?", she said, chuckling, as she veered her head to observe the outpouring of excitement from Flint.

"You sure know I would", he replied, smiling back at her.

Bang!!

The trunk of the vehicle caved, under the strike of a heavy caliber rifle.

"I think now is the best time to create that cover fire..", Flint suggested, under the pressure of the raging assault.

Grrrrr.....

A familiar noise rang out, as Christine returned fire.

"Ahh!!"

"I've been hit..."

Splitch!!

A bullet tailored its course through another's skull.

....

"Sir, targets are returning fire.."

"Three gunned down..."

"Two out of commission, one dead.."

"Gimme that!', the operator in charge said with a snarl, as he snatched an AR-500 assault rifle from the operator's hand.

"You want something done well, you do it yourself..", he added, emerging from the window, with gun in hand.

Pow!!

The left rear tyre blew out.

"We've been hit Christine, like very bad", Flint reported, pushing his driving abilities to their limits; struggling to keep the jeep from tumbling.

"Shit!!', she cursed, glaring in anger, at the source from where the shot originated from.

"Brace yourself Christine, we're going for a roll!!", he announced loudly, as the road ended with a cliff, with a sharp bend as the only viable option; proving impossible to execute, due to the condition of the tyres.

Reaching out a hand he dragged her in, with the other he pushed his door open; dragging both of them out of the moving vehicle.

They reeled on the dirt of the road, leaving the vehicle to charge forward uncontrollably.

....

"They've ejected the vehicle sir."

"A predicted outcome..", he said with a smile.

"HALT!!", he ordered, as all vehicles came to an abrupt stop.

.....

"We have to move quickly, while we have a head start", Flint pointed out, while double checking the number of bullets in his "Smith & Wesson" pistol; while they sprinted through the woods beside the road.

"How many rounds have you got left?', he said, stopping to ask Christine, while nudging his head towards the gun.

"Two rounds, three at most", she answered, re-cocking the assault.

"Let's go", she said, nudging her towards the thicket.

.....

"Spread out, secure the perimeter..", this time the captain gave the order; his broken hand hanging by a sling.

"You've done well soldier..", he said, commending the operator he left in charge.

"I'll take it from here", he added.

....

"We got to relay a distress message to her, Flint..", Christine said, as they stopped to catch their breath.

"I know but, I can't get a signal..", he said, as he walked around, trying to get a network connection.

Rustle..

Snap!

A branch snapped in the woods, alerting the duo.

"What was that?!", Christine asked, already alarmed, as they both turned towards the location of the sound.

"They are already here", Flint said sadly.

"Hello Christine", a voice said behind Flint, putting quite a scare in them.

Christine turned towards the voice, gun in hand; only to see a barrel pointing towards Flint's head.

It was a Cyber 9.5, a black pistol resembling a desert eagle, only black in color.

"Who are you?!", she asked, as she aimed her weapon towards the figure.

"I don't think that's a bright idea.." he pointed out, as streaks of flashlights shone their brightness on her; alongside the cocking of guns which became prominent in the air.

"Shit..", she cursed beneath her breath.

"Hey Harvey..", Flint said with a sigh, as he turned to face the figure.
