Chapter one

Here I was again. It was only a matter of time before I would receive a phone call from... *Buzz buzz* My phone rang before I could complete the words in my thought.

I checked for the name of the caller on the screen and I wasn't surprised to see who it was.

'Mr. Kennedy Collins'

I answered the call and waited for him to speak first, "Hello? Am I on to Trevor Chess?" he asked me.

"Yes sir," I answered in a weak tone of voice.

"Oh! Right, You are fired! Do not ever think of returning to this company ever again!" he yelled into the phone, almost bursting my eardrum, and then he ended the call.

I put my old-fashioned phone aside and sat up in bed. I stretched and yawned before getting up and slamming my shoulder against the rickety old door of my room so it would open for me.

I entered the living room of my average house and took the cup of coffee I had made yesterday in my hand.

I sipped it and I gagged immediately it touched my tongue and went down my poor throat. My fourth boss in my fourth job in a row had just fired me. Pouring hot coffee on his nagging wife which would whoop insulting my dead parents, was the wrong thing to do.

I sat on my wooden chair and turned on the tv. Maybe there would be another job under advertisement that I could go for.

I got distracted by some banging on the front door. There was only one person who would ever visit a poor nobody like me and that one person was the last person that any tenant would ever want to see near their shelter.

"Trevor! Trevor Chess!" my landlady shouted my name, causing my heart to skip a beat at the sudden outburst.

"Trevor I know you are in there! You better open this door at once!" she added. By the tone of her voice, I could tell that she was furious as hell.

"I will be right there Mrs. Clay. Just hold on!" I replied to her.

I rushed to push all my filth into my bedroom first. On my way to the front door, I stepped on something soft and almost tripped on it when my second foot clung to it. I looked down to see that it was my boxer.

I quickly kicked it behind the door and finally opened the same door. The landlady barged in and looked around my house while standing in one spot.

I noticed the stains on my shirt and I covered it fast with my hand before she could turn to me. "Trevor your rent is due!" she shouted.

"I am right next to you Mrs. Clay. You do not have to shout for the neighbors to know." I said to her.

"Are you stupid?! You owe me seven months' worth of rent and you are having the nerves to tell me to lower my voice?!" she yelled at me.

I wanted nothing more but to just seal her voice. There was always this shame I had whenever she would come to ask for rent. Everyone here knew the kind of penniless person I was but there was no need for her to do a monthly announcement of how I have not paid a dime since I moved into this place.

"But madam, I told you before of how my distant cousin..."

"Distant cousin my foot!" she interrupted me. "I do not want to hear any excuses from you! Ever! You had promised to pay all that you owe for the past months and this month itself as well!" she complained to me.

"Mrs. Clay, I swear it is not like I do not want to pay. I want to pay but the money is just not available right now. I will get my salary by the end of the next month. Just wait until the end of next month." I pleaded with her.

"Wait?! Wait?! Trevor, you just said to me that I should wait?! Ha! The wait is all that I have been doing these past seven months. And you are here asking me again to still wait?! Do I look that stupid to you?!" my landlady retorted.

"I told you what happened before. I told you all the reasons why I could not pay." I said to her.

My landlady burst into loud laughter. I was surprised to hear her laughing with such force and mockery at me.

"I regret the day I stopped and listened to you when you said you were looking for a place to stay. Now I am the one suffering it," she said.

"You are not suffering anything, Mrs. Clay. I promise you that I will pay." I said to her.

"Shut up! Pay what?! What do you want to pay?! Where will you get the money from?! I know everything Trevor! Everything!" she shouted to my face.

"What? Have I not been truthful to you all this time?!" I said to the landlady. A slap across my face followed the end of my sentence.

"Do you take me for such great a fool?! Huh?! All your excuses were nothing but lies! Lies I tell you! No sick mother! No dying father! No sister that died in the hospital! Just you alone in this world!" she shouted to my face.

Her words, though I knew them to be true all my life, went right through my heart like an arrow shot by a cupid. Not the cupid of love but one of despair, sorrow, and emptiness.

"I will be merciful because I know myself as a patient and kind-hearted woman. Trevor I am giving you from now until tomorrow morning to either pay up all that you owe or take your things and leave! Any other person would have had you arrested!" she said.

She opened the door and left while I stood there in silence as I watched the door slam shut before my eyes.

Great! Just great! First I became jobless and now I will be homeless to add. Where will I go when I have no one on earth to call family or friends?! Where?! I wish I could live the life of someone else not this miserable life of mine.

I sat on the floor in front of the chair and scanned my house with my eyes. Even the house I lived in was a dump. It sure fits my life. I do not deserve anything good in this world.

Things will never get better. Nothing will change and I will forever be this way until I die somewhere and even my death will not be noticed in this world by anyone.
