Chapter Nine

Herbert Halloway had touched down at the hotel where he was texted to meet with her. He seemed to have been bewitched that most of his guards had thought of resuscitating his psyche, they had never seen him that nervous before since they had been working for him.

“How are you, Cynthia?” Herbert Halloway said.

“I am fine, Chief. How about you? How have you been?” She asked.

“I am fine too.”

Cynthia looked around and feigned not to be comfortable with the group of his men that were around them. Although, Cynthia also came with his men. They were the newly recruited police who were incorporated into the mission and they were meant to act according to the script and feigned like they were truly one of the guards of Cynthia.

When Herbert Halloway noticed that he wasn’t comfortable with the presence of his men, he invited one of his bouncers nigher and whispered into his ear. He ordered the rest to leave. They were surprised that the ferocious Herbert Halloway was being controlled by an ordinary woman.

It seemed his cup was getting filled and they wouldn’t be having enough of his idiosyncrasies towards women. Herbert Halloway saw the guys that stood behind her like a soldier. He didn’t see them at first until his men walked out.

“Who are those?” He asked.

“Just like your guards. They are my men who follow me everywhere I am going.”

Herbert nodded, “can they also excuse us?” Herbert asked.

Cynthia nodded and tweaked his head behind. He gave a signal to them and they walked out of his premise. Herbert seemed it was the perfect time they had the discussion.

“So your business line. I have been interested in knowing all this while but it seems you ladies weren’t entertained with discussing it on the phone. I ought to have asked when we met at the hotel but something came up and I have to attend to it. I thought you ladies were angry due to the sudden disappearance.”

“It is fine. As you saw us that they, we work for one another. I am into exporting illegal drugs. Among my colleagues was the one who work with the street men and supply us enough when the need arise. In all, our businesses are interlinked that’s why it isn’t stated on our card.”

Herbert Halloway nodded having the image of the business card in his psyche.

“So you are into exporting it illegal drugs?”

Cynthia nodded, “how about you? Your business isn’t exactly stated on the card and I notice it is meant for some clandestine..”

Herbert Halloway felt comfortable since it seemed that they were in the same business.

“I am also into that. Although, I have a larger empire with numbers of cabinets. I am the popular Herbert Halloway of Lagos. I was surprised that you guys haven’t learnt of me the first time I introduced myself.”

“Not really. We aren’t loud about our business and we live a coded life.”

Herbert Halloway nodded. The drinks they ordered had been brought before them, he grabbed the transparent mug opposite them and filled it with with the win including Cynthia’s. She knew that he was already getting him.

“What about your friends. Which kinda business are they engaged in?”

“I can’t tell you that. That had been the rule we’ve been obeying. Maybe when you meet them. Perhaps, how is your business doing?”

“It hasn’t been easy recently although, I have largely depended on my political affiliation but recently, I have to cool down the interest when the Mushin police and the NDLEA tighten the security around and eyes were on me. But I know it is just a matter of time,” he smiled.

Cynthia felt the need to force more words out of his mouth especially the political affiliation part he made mention off. She wouldn’t want him to mention any of the politicians he worked with so she wouldn’t be suspected.

“That’s understandable. I also have some political god-fathers who help me with my transactions either.”

Herbert Halloway nodded with the mug glued in his mouth gulping the wine. He seemed not to be too comfortable with the wine hence he ordered for an alcohol and he was served. It was a lengthy hour of discussion before they concluded and their respective home.

Herbert Halloway’s guards hadn’t been satisfied with his recent affiliation with those women. They thought it was like every other women who he did have interest in just to get in between their legs and went his way. He was in the car being drove home when one of his most adored bouncer saw the need to voice out after the discussion they had outside when he was having conversation with Cynthia in the hotel.

“Boss,” he said.

Herbert Halloway’s attention was turned away from the phone. He thought he wanted to tell him about calls that entered when he was having a conversation with Cynthia.

“Don’t you think there is more about those ladies than just what you think?”

Herbert Halloway went into a few seconds of thought. He didn’t seem to get what he was trying to say. He adjusted.

“I don’t understand. Do you notice anything about them?” He asked.

“I am not sincerely. But I think the former method should be deployed. They shouldn’t be an exception, we have to keep eyes on them since you are going to get closer to them.”

Herbert Halloway smiled. He seemed to be getting where he was driving at with his suggestion. He didn’t utter any more word as he nodded and continue flipping through his phone. Jamy thought he was still gonna communicate but having wait for more than a minute without a response. He continued driving without uttering a word.

When they touched down home, Jamy was surprised that he had chosen to act upon his word. He thought he turned it down by not giving a response. Herbert walked to the conference room where he did have meeting with all his guards.
