CONTEMPLATING

“Yes, I don’t need them anymore, take them back,” I responded swiftly.

“That’s not only the problem, if you return your wings and arrows, you will die,” he said in a calm tone. I got up from the bed and gazed at him with my eyes wide open.

“What?!” I questioned.

“Yes, if you were to throw them away, you will be throwing your life away,” he responded in a calm tone. He continued explaining to me that the only reason I am alive is because I accepted the wings and arrows as a devil king candidate. After a few moments.

“I see,” I muttered as I wrapped my arms around my legs and folded myself inside my bed. I guess I can’t run away from being a devil candidate. But I don’t want to end up like that comedian Rodriguez, Burnaman is ready to kill all the devil candidates to become the devil king.

“Trevor, I don’t understand human emotions that well, but I think you must be scared of Burnaman, if that’s the case, why don’t you stay inside your apartment for a while?” Mordecai asked as he flew closer to my face and looked at me.

Whatever the circumstances, I don’t think I will find happiness by just staying inside my apartment, besides my college entrance ceremony is tomorrow, am I going to live in fear and stay couped up in my apartment for the rest of my life? I can’t hide in my apartment, besides Mordecai saved me from committing suicide. So, I don’t think I have anything to lose.

I raised my eyes and looked at Mordecai.

“I have decided, I am going to college tomorrow, I will never find happiness if I just hide here in my apartment,” I said boldly.

“But….” I cut him off.

“It’s going to be fine, as long as you are not with me, Burnaman or the other devil candidates won’t know I am a devil candidate. Burnaman has no right to keep me from going out and finding happiness,” I stated with my eyebrows pressed tightly together. I am going to stand my ground from now on.

The following morning,

I was standing in front of the large mirror that was next to my bed, I was knotting my tie and getting ready to leave for college.

“Wow, that suit looks good on you,” Mordecai said as he flew over to me out of nowhere.

“Thanks,” I replied with a warm smile.

I was done knotting my tie, I picked up my backpack from the bed and wore it.

“I am heading off to college, I will see you when I get back,” I said as he turned and looked at Mordecai.

“Okay,” he muttered.

“Oh, and when you get to school, don’t forget to shoot Brianna with a red arrow,” he added.

My eyes popped out, I was in shock, how did Mordecai know about my childhood crush?

“Yeah, don’t forget to make her fall in love with you, isn’t that one of the reasons you chose that university? So you could be around her?” Oh my gosh, how did Mordecai know all of this, I couldn’t help but feel shy, truly Brianna was one of the main reasons I picked Harvard University.

“Well even though you know all this, that does not mean that I will use a red arrow to make Brianna fall in love with me,” I responded.

“Ahhh, why not?!” He complained.

After Mordecai and I went back and forth for a few minutes I left my apartment and went to college.

********************

At Harvard University.

The sky was bright as the morning sun illuminated the entire city. I walked through the entrance of the gates of the university, making my way over to the lecture building as I approached the building, I saw black feathers falling from the sky, they looked like those of the demon wings. I raised my head and traced where the feathers were falling from, to my greatest surprise, I saw a demon that looked like Mordecai, he has a smaller build from Mordecai, but they looked the same. My heart started beating fast as I saw the demon.

I Just hope the demon can’t see me and won’t notice that I could see him. Besides whom does this demon belong too? Is it Burnaman? Does Burnaman attend this university? Thoughts ran through my head, I was frozen in the spot I was standing and couldn’t move, I didn’t know what I was supposed to do next, I don’t want to die today.

I have to calm down, he is nowhere near me, I don’t think he has a way of knowing that I am a devil candidate, I just need to act natural and walk into the lecture building.

I raised my left leg and was about to start moving when from nowhere the demon flew in front of my face and looked into my eyes. My heart skipped a beat, my mouth opened wide, I was in complete shock, I think he knows that I could see him.

“It’s too late, nice try, but you have reacted to seeing me and you are sweating so much,” he said in a rumbling tone with an evil grin on his face.

“I didn’t know a devil candidate was so close by, what seems to be the problem? Why do you look so scared?” He asked as he placed one hand under his chin. My legs were trembling in fear.

“This isn’t your first time seeing a demon is it?” He asked as he looked at me mischievously.

“No, but, who is it that you are with?” I asked in a shaky voice, my lips were trembling.

“I am attached to a student who attends this school, she is standing right behind you,” he answered.

I swiftly turned around and looked at the person standing behind me. To my greatest surprise it was Brianna. Yes, the same Brianna that I am in love with.

She had dark hair, light brown eyes and a very beautiful smile. I couldn’t imagine that Brianna was also a devil candidate.

“Trevor is that you?” She asked as she brought out a red arrow and shot me in the chest. She was so quick to shoot me with the arrow that I didn’t have time to move.

I felt a surge of emotions running through my body. I can’t believe she shot me with a red arrow. Even though I have been shot, I am still aware of what happened, but since I already have feelings for Brianna nothing has changed, but it was as if the feelings I had for her grew even stronger.

I raised my head and gazed at her.

“The truth is, I love you Brianna, I have always loved you!” I yelled out loud. I couldn’t believe I just screamed that out loud, normally I wouldn’t be able to confess my feelings to her, but I think all this is because of the red arrow.

I gazed into her eyes and hoped for a reaction after I have confessed my feelings, but she was quiet and her face was pale. I moved closer to her and held both her arms.

“Brianna, what is it? Why do you look so down? Why are you making that face? Talk to me,” I said in a rumbling tone.

“You know I will do anything for you!” I yelled.

“Brianna! Do what I told you to do,” Brianna’s demon said from behind me.

Brianna nodded her head in agreement to what her demon said. She raised her eyes and gazed at me.

“Trevor tell me, do you have wings?” She asked in low tone.

“Yes, I have,” I responded.

“Good, as I suspected!” Brianna’s demon said in a rumbling tone.

“Do you remember where I live?” Brianna asked raising an eyebrow.

“Of course,” I answered swiftly.

“OK, my room is on the third floor, you can come in through the window, make sure no one sees you and wait there for me,” She stated still maintaining strong eye contact with me.

“Wait, are you sure?” I replied.

“Yes, I will come and meet you there
