CHAPTER ONE

( Ralph's POV)

It was a cold Wednesday evening, my dad and I were in the living room watching the 8.oclock news when we heard the dogs backing endlessly. At first we thought it was their usual barking routine when a car or an unrecognizable person walked past our building.

There was a cling on the door. We both turned to listen if the sound was truly coming from our door.

And then another ring. My dad quickly walked over to see who it was at this time. No one visits our home this late.

I watched,

"Ah! Mr Malcom, come in dad said '' The man walked in with a smile, holding a huge huge cigarette in between his right middle fingers.

He took his seat on the couch while I watched him closely.

He had a deep cut across his left chin that made him look like a serial killer. Perhaps he was not as wealthy as Dad. Mr Abbey Malcom was Dad's business associate until the Westfield deal. Dad had signed a contract with them and so did Malcom's company.

They were partners for four years, dad told me everything even though I was ten and the only heir to the company. Dad and Mr Malcom had closed deals together sharing profits from their signed contracts. The last deal they had together was the AD&C contract which pulled in four hundred million dollars, dad had taken a 60% cut and Malcolm 40% profit. It was the deal. They signed it.

Dad sat next to him. They talked and laughed about their coming contract and how it would be of great benefits to their companies. I couldn't concentrate on the game I was playing from my ipad and so I went upstairs to meet mum.

Dad was with a man in the sitting room I had told her.

"Who was he?" she asked almost in a whisper .

"Mr Malcom", I responded.

She nodded and continued what she was doing.

There was something strange about this visit, I could feel it but I was only a child

The deal was scheduled for two weeks. Dad had travelled for a different deal.

Mum and I were sitting by the pool side beside our house when a Black Car pulled in. We sat and watched whoever came out.

A man dressed in a black suit and pants approached us, he was from Malcolm.

Hi! He said not addressing anyone in particular.

Hi!

Mum replied to him in her usual high pitched tune.

The man smiled exposing his two broken teeth. I became more scared at the way he surveyed our house with his eyes before asking about my dad.

"I am here to see Mr. Tayson" he broke out in a husky tune.

My husband isn't home at the moment, you can check back in a few days. mum responded.

He narrowed his eyes at mum then murtured what seemed like a thank you.

He walked back to the car and drove off.

I couldn't believe what had happened.

Dad had returned a few days earlier than we expected. He called mum to pick him up at the airport instead of the driver who was paid to do so.

I was happy my dad was back in town, he had promised me a visit to the Latique Zoo. Hopefully I would see the animals I had fantasies so much about.

We had just finished dinner when we heard a sharp screed from a vehicle outside our house.

And then a knock on the door dad rushed to open the door. Two men walked in dressed in black leather pants and jacket.

They had the most dangerous look I had ever seen.

The two men paced the house like they were looking for some vital information before finally settling on dad who they had forced to sit on the ground face down.

"You want to take all the money from the contract huh?" the first man said, pulling dad by the hair.

"Men like you don't roll with Abbey Malcom", he added.

My dad was shaking, his entire body trembling, he begged them to take all the money and spare his family. The man turned around facing mum this time. He grinned at her exposing his badly shaped set of teeth which was now covered in braces.

He pulled the trigger at mum who was lying face down holding me tight in her grip beside her. I was just a child.

Boom! boom! boom!

Three shots, the bullets pierced through her stomach. I saw blood for the first time flowing like a pool.

She was dead.

Dad was still pleading for his life and cried. The second man hit dead on the neck with his rifle and then he pull the trigger sending several bullets on dad's entire body

I peed in my pants. I was shaking violently from fear and shock. One of the men walked up to me and touched me on my cheek.

"Poor boy" he said almost in a whisper.

"Leave the boy alone", the other man screamed at him.

"We must leave now!" He ordered.

Yeah! The first man replied.

"You must run boy, run! Run! far away and never return, the day you do, you will die" he threatened!

I nodded my head vigorously. I didn't know if I did this out of fear, or shock or in obedience.

I ran.

I had spent the night at the gas station on the next street. The night was cold and I was almost freezing. The warm tap on my left leg got me jerking out of sleep.

It was the gas attendant who had resumed work that morning. The sun was rising quickly and so I walked the long distance not sure of where I was heading. I can't remember how long it was. I took the long walk regardless.

There was a park down the street I crossed over. I watched the kids run up and down with their toys. I had none, no parents and almost dying of starvation.

Hi! came a little soft voice behind me…

I turned.

I'm Jane Abbey, the little girl said, smiling.

She was young and innocent.

I didn't say a word to her, she had a burger and a little bottle of water in her hands.

You care for some? she spoke again.

I grabbed the burger and the water and thanked her.

I could never forget her since then.

She saved me.

A few weeks later I was taken away by an old family friend. Far away from Ruwan.

This is the reward for my many years of hard work.

I am Ralph Scott Taylor a.k.a "the Rich blade
