CHAPTER EIGHT

Another Failed Plea

Smith had gone to pay CEO Lee a visit at the office. It was exactly 8.am in the morning when he arrived at the premises. He was shown to the office by the secretary, a young and elegant Lady of about 25 years.

CEO Lee was sitting nicely behind his table, a pile of books occupying one part of the table.

Good morning Mr, Smith, he greeted Stretching out his right hand for a warm handshake.

The two men exchanged pleasantries before focusing on the main reason for the visit. Smith immediately told him of his plan and how he urgently needs his help.

Hold on a second, Lee Said.

He picked up his phone and dialed CEO Taylor's office.

"hello"

the voice responded.

he listened keenly to what the voice on the other end was saying and the he responded.

"yeah, i know your boss is not in town but Dan you could help me talk to him about the Abbey's contract at hand".

"I have been ordered by my boss to cancel any contract our company has with anyone who tries to plead for the Abbey's. You've done a great job Lee. All contracts with your company are cancelled. You will hear from our lawyers" the voice said.

 The call hung.

"What! No this isn't happening to me. No!" CEO Lee panicked.

What's the matter Lee, Smith asked, concerned.

"How dare you?

You sent me to a lion's den? Now I've lost everything. You offended Taylor and you sent me to face the burning anger? All my projects with him have fallen through as we speak! Damn you Smith!

Get out of my office, get out! Lee Barked angrily. Pushing down the stock of books on his table.

Smith ran out as fast as he could. He couldn't imagine. Even the great CEO Lee couldn't do anything to help him. Instead he got Al his contract dissolved. Weren't CEO Lee and Taylor friends from the same high school, what changed? He couldn't believe this. He had never in a single day thought that this matter would be this hard.

What did Jane do to make CEO Taylor so protective of her?

"That little whore" he growled.

"She has him wrapped around her little finger's doesn't she?" Smith laughed coldly.

She must have been really good in his bed. What else could make him act like this? What else could make him protect her this much?

That's good for nothing slut!

Bullshit!

"I would rather beg a dog at this point to grovel for that bitch" he said angrily.

Smith was so furious, his teeth were chattering.

He had already humbled himself, he had begged and this was the attitude Jane was giving him?

She can rot in hell I don't care.

Travis watched his father from one side of his eyes. Sitting right next to him at the back of the car.

They drove home, frustrated.

************

The bang on the door made Jane and Ralph jerk to their feet.

Boom, boom, boom! came the bang again

Ralph rushed to get the door.

It was Smith and Travis. They were both feel with terror when they came face to face with Ralph.

We are here to see Jane, Smith said quickly and calmly.

"Let them in", Jane said.

I have told you I don't want to work for the company anymore" are you both dumb or something?" She continued.

You…how dare you… ok you just wait!

Travis shouted this then made a run for it, scars that Ralph might go crazy and  hit him again.

Jane is worried about her family, so she turns to face her mother, and then her father.

"Are we making so much of a fuss?"

Smith's last words before leaving were obviously a threat to them.

Jane couldn't help it, she became worried about her family's safety. She knew exactly what sort of people her uncle and son were. They would most definitely want revenge. He has never regarded Harry ( her father) as his blood brother, not even for once and so he treats them like total strangers and if they ever offend him he is capable of doing anything to hurt them. She wonders from whom he got that kind of inhumane character from?.

"Not any I can remember "

Ralph calmly cut in " he asked us to wait, so we wait right here".

He cleared off the dishes they had emptied on the table before the arrival of the two men. Marie quickly rushed over to do it instead when she saw him taking out the dishes.

"Don't worry mum, I will do it, it's fine ".

He said, pulling the spoon softly from her hand.

This son -in-law is really temperamental with things such as what Smith and his son ate doing to them. She didn't quite see it in him before but now she does. It was clear to her that the young man she had under her roof as her daughter's husband would was going to protect their family from bullies. Especially from Smith and his arrogant son.

It runs in the blood she guessed.

Was this her son-in-law really a homeless person? Is he really an orphan? Or was he just pretending to be one. She didn't have any idea.

"I know this whole thing has been really hard on you these past days but trust me mum everything is going to be fine." Ralph Said to her with so much assurance.

Marie just stared, blinking her eyes repeatedly. She nodded.

Jane was uneasy, she paced round the sitting room back and forth. It does seem bad that Smith and Travis had come to apologize. She had never seen her uncle humble.

She is still thinking she should just let everything slide before things blow out of proportion so that it would not aggravate the tension within the family.

But Ralph didn't care for any of this rather he insisted that Smith come personally to apologize

How was this possible?

She knows the kind of person her uncle is.

That self-centered, egocentric, proud and mean uncle of her's would never hide his pride to apologize to anyone.

"You're so wrong," he said to Jane. His eyes were clean and clear.

They are the ones who offended me, they keep stepping on my very last nerve and I shall teach them all a lesson. None of them would escape it.

I have said this a million times over.

I will not let anyone bully you again.

The look in his eyes got Jane panicked. She didn't know what exactly to make out of what he had just said. She managed a little smile. She wasn't comfortable.

************

Thirty minutes later.

Ralph had finished washing the dishes. Marie ran into Jane's room when she realized that Ralph had gone into the bathroom to take a shower.

"I do not quite understand this husband of yours Jane", she said almost in a whisper.

What about him? Jane asked, curiously.

Batting her eyelids repeatedly as she waits for her mother's response.

"Does he have any mental illness?"  her mother asked.

Jane looked at her mother even more confused than she had been.

Marie is afraid Ralph would hurt Jane. His actions weren't normal to her.

" I don't think he does," she replied.

Jane thought for a while and then she remembered that clear and clean look in his eyes.

"He won't hurt me mum, do not worry about that". She said assuredly.

Kacha…

The bathroom door flung open and Ralph stepped out with a towel wrapped around his waist.

Marie quickly ran out, mouthing to her daughter: There's a metal bat in my room, just shout Incase anything happens.

Jane's face was red and her heart began pounding loudly.

Was she actually going to let this strange man sleep in her room?
