Chapter 5

“I TOLD YOU SO”

Camellia called her granddaughter Kathleen aside and asked her “what are you still doing with that useless husband of yours Klay, why don’t you leave him and marry that cute man friend of yours that invited Dr Suess over for my treatment? Now, don’t you give me that look as if I don’t know what I am talking about” she chided Kathleen?

“I don’t know what you are talking about replied her grandmother. Mr. Bryce is just an old friend, who happens to have a lot of money. I don’t even have any feelings for him in general at all” she tried replying.

“Shush! The little girl I am telling you what to do, see dear I am telling you what is best for you now. He seems like a reasonable young man why not give him a chance or do you think he won’t do any better than that useless fellow you have for a husband” she interrupted Kathleen who was trying to speak.

“I just don’t like him and remember you can’t force love” she responded to her grandmom while waiting for a reply. She turned around and noticed her gasping for breath, seeing this she froze.

She watched in silence as Camellia shook vividly, trying to breathe properly, while the live support machine beeped noisily, alerting the nearby doctors who were just two rooms away. Swiftly they came into the room and swung into action trying to stabilize her condition while a nurse ushered the family out of the room.

The doctors were trying to get her readings from the chart on the wall but couldn’t see it were left frustrated because they didn’t where to start from or what medication she was on, and they didn’t want to aggravate the ailment much more with the wrong treatment.

The life support machine started beeping rapidly now making noises, seeing that as a sign they quickly tried to jump-start her heart, after they noticed she was going into a cardiac arrest. One of the doctors there quickly tap the intercom device in the room and asked for Dr Arshad which was carried through the hospital's internal speakers.

Hearing this, Dr Arshad quickly left his lunch and started running toward the elevator. Luckily, he found it empty and entered it, and went straight for the third floor where they were. in the elevator, he prayed that Dr Suess was still on site but all for the wrong reasons. He didn’t want to be the fall guy, in this case, knowing they are very powerful they can even suspend his medical license; he had seen it happen to some of his colleagues at work so he had to be careful. He took out his mobile phone and dialled Dr Suess praying in his mind he would answer the call and he did.

“Hello, Doctor Suess, it's Dr Arshad can you report to Mrs. Camelia Burgess's room, she having an emergency turns out Mr. Klay was right, don’t worry about me I am on my way there now” Doctor Arshad ended the call before he could talk.

Kathleen was now crying watching what could be her grandmother's last moments on earth and it was excruciating. She started choking on her blood, and it was coming out of her mouth. Little by little she was coughing and spitting blood on the hospital white bedsheets. “Where the hell is Dr Suess, she cried out loud.” She couldn’t take it any longer she stepped out of the room and was crying.

Then suddenly there was a large clicking sound, she looked it was the elevator someone was coming but who she wondered. She ran to the elevator quickly wiping tears from her cheeks. As she saw Dr Arshad running out of the elevator, she tried calling him between sobs she was barely able to speak as he ran past her.

Dr Arshad ran into the room without remembering her husband Klay when he came, he saw Dr Amelia trying her best to stabilize Mrs. Burgess, his mind relaxed a bit as she wasn’t alone. He came into the room and asked quickly “what drugs do you need? and how many ccs?”

Dr Arshad had already brought a midazolam bottle from the cabinet hanging on the wall and tried using a new syringe from the packet he saw there. He quickly used the syringe and injected up to thirty ccs of the anaesthetic drugs then he stretched his hands to give Dr Amelia the syringe.

Then Dr Suess entered the room he was shocked you see, he never thought he could make a grave mistake when he was doing his secret procedure. How did he make the mistake he pondered deeply, he knew to his knowledge he did everything well so what went wrong while watching Dr Amelia and Dr Arshad do their best to stabilize her? He stood for what seemed like thirty minutes but it wasn’t more than two minutes he watched as they were “moving and acting very like scattered ants on a table” he tried calling their attention but his voice wouldn’t come out.

All this while the family was in the other room separated by the glass watching in horror as Mrs. Camelia was treated by doctors who didn’t know what they were doing. Mr. Paul quickly stood up and went to the intercom on the table in front of them and demanded that Dr. Suess should present himself as he was the one that messed up. He threatened to make them pay if she died or where to go into a coma.

Dr Arshad cursed under his lips knowing if the hospital were to be sued it would hit him harder than ever. He regarded the hospital as a safe space where he came to escape from his troublesome nagging wife, who have been very violent the past few months. He turned around looking to grab something when he saw Dr Suess standing frozen at the doorstep just watching them and they worked in horror.

Dr Suess yelled trying to bring him back to his senses seeing that he wasn’t answering, he walked over to him and slapped him hard on his face which got his attention back.” Do you know what to do here?” he asked him.

Dr Suess getting back to his senses just looked at him and said no. not a word more from the best doctor in the country. Dr Arshad knew he was fucked, because this wasn’t how it was supposed to play. Dr Arshad knew nothing could be done right now other than to put Mrs. Camelia into a medically induced coma and hope for the best, but how will they stop the bleeding? The bed sheets were soaked with blood now. What can be done he looked up as if he was asking for a sign from the heavens.

Luckily his prayers were answered very quickly, his pen dangled off his lab coat and fell on the floor. As he bent to pick it up, he saw where Mr. Klay was hitting a stupid vending machine. He wanted to get something of it he thought. He then remembered Mr. Klay told them, that Dr Suess didn’t do the session well and so only he might have an idea on what they should do.

“Mr. Klay, help we need you right now,” he said running to Klay who was visibly angry right now.

Klay has been surprised to hear someone calling his name out loud turned and faced the advancing figure running toward him. at first, he couldn’t make out who it was, till the figure approached closer to him. He saw it was Dr Arshad and made a mental note of how athletic he was despite his stature. In less than ten seconds Dr Arshad was with him already. Damn this man is as quick as John Wall he thought to himself.

“Help she’s is choking on her blood and having a cardiac arrest,” he said to Klay while trying to get his breath hoping Klay would help her despite him noticing how the family was treated in the hospital. He knew the marriage was not a good one.

Klay didn’t seem disturbed about helping them, he looked at the vending machine and tried hitting it hoping the chips he has paid for would eventually come out, then he saw his reflection on the shiny part of the machine changed to that of his master Lee saying “remember, remember your teachings, our code, and way of life. Do not allow hatred to blind your heart.”

Then suddenly expectedly he dashed towards the room leaving Dr Arshad surprised because he didn’t expect him to help them after how they treated him. “What did I say that triggered him that way he obliged he asked himself or is it that deep down klay was just a good person” well I guess would never know he thought to himself.
