1. Slave Boy

The village in the outskirt part of Ettalia town was busy, bustling with life and vigorous activities of the villagers. It was nothing to wonder about, because during this time everybody was focused on reaping what they sowed. Yes, it was harvest time, a moment that was celebrated by the residents with a relieved and joyful expressions. Though the lands they worked on was not theirs to begin with, at least they already secured the food stocks and supplies for the upcoming season. They wouldn’t have to worry about what to eat in the winter, as the landlord would give them their share of collecting the crops in his behalf.

Devon’s family was also a part of that annual event. Together they tirelessly gathered the fruits and vegetables which grew so abundantly this year.

“Brother, look! This pumpkin is very big! Even bigger than all other pumpkins around!” shouted a young girl to Devon. “With this, I can eat pumpkin soup everyday like I always dream of!”

“Hahaha! You’re right, Vinette! That pumpkin is almost twice your head!” chuckled Devon. “But you know, everything should be in moderation. If you eat that pumpkin soup everyday, you will get bored of it in no time, and before you know it, you will come to despise your favourite fruit.”

“That won’t happen, Brother! You know how much love I have for pumpkin!” said Vinette. “Don’t you know I even managed to mix it with Father’s coffee? The flavour may surprise you!”

Devon couldn’t even begin to imagine what taste pumpkin would make when it went together with coffee’s bitter flavour. He just could show a creeped out expression as a sign of his fear towards his little sister’s peculiar sense of taste.

“Devon, Vinette! It’s okay to play in a while, but please don’t fall behind in collecting the crops!” reminded their father from a distance. “We need to finish it before the dusk falls!”

“Yes, Father! I tried to tell Vinette, but she just wouldn’t listen!” replied Devon, while sticking his tongue out to his sister, playfully blaming her as a harmless joke. “I’ll be sure to keep her on the right track, don’t you worry, Father!”

Vinette tried to voice her disagreement, but her brother’s hand quickly covered her mouth, making her unable to say anything. Devon’s another hand gently played with his sister’s jet black hair.

“Such a reliable big brother! Well, me and your mother would go for a while to take the cart for the crops. In the meantime, continue with your work, alright?” requested Devon’s father. “Keep an eye on Vinette as well. It’s her first time on the field, after all.”

“Come on, honey! Lend me a hand, will you?”

As his father and mother left, Devon released his hand from Vinette’s mouth.

“Brother, you’re so mean!” protested Vinette while hitting Devon’s arms repeatedly yet weakly.

Their cheerful atmosphere was suddenly intervened by the arrival of who seemed to be an important figure around the village. He was accompanied by some of his guards and his son.

“Devon, it’s been a while,” greeted that majestic-looking man in his mid-fifties. “I see you’ve been working hard.”

“Ah, Duke Conrad, it’s always a pleasure to meet you,” answered Devon politely, stopping his playful banter with his sister. “To what do I owe this honor, Sir?”

“I am just here to have a look at the village’s harvest festival. I must say I am quite impressed!” replied Duke Conrad.

“I am glad that you find it satisfying, Sir. It’s all thanks to your capable leadership and guidance that allowed us to gain this abundant crops,” said Devon.

“Looks like even the little one already started to help out as well. Very admirable!” praised Duke Conrad while turning his gaze to Vinette, who hid herself behind her brother. “Where’s your father and mother?”

“Right now, they’re preparing the cart for the harvest, Sir. In the meantime, they entrusted this field to me. I’m sure they will come back in no time,” reported Devon fluently, increasing Duke’s good impression of him even further.

“So young yet so reliable! And you even have time to take care of your little sister at the same time!” applauded the Duke. “Gesta, you could learn a thing or two from this young gentleman here!”

The snobby boy behind the Duke just scoffed bitterly, clearly refused his father’s statement but too afraid to let it out of his mouth.

“Sir, the meeting in village chief’s residence will take place in about less than 10 minutes!” reported the Duke’s advisor.

“Very well, we shall proceed,” said the Duke. “Devon, take care. Send my best regards to your parents.”

“I will, Sir Conrad,” nodded Devon obediently.

After Duke Conrad left, Gesta quickly approached Devon, ready to unleash his fury.

“You better don’t let Father’s kind words into your head, you commoner!” yelled Gesta to Devon’s face. “He just wants some grunts to be ordered around, that’s all! Don’t feel that you’re special, you’re just a slave!”

“Hmph, no need to remind me, spoiled brat! I am tired already from all the hassles you gave me at school, so spare me during this time, yeah?” retorted Devon, unaffected by Gesta’s intimidation.

Feeling upset that his threat didn’t work, Gesta turned his target to Vinette, who was watching their confrontation in fear.

“Man, you start to forget your place day by day, huh? Maybe your little sister can help you remember!”

Suddenly Gesta grabbed Vinette roughly and started to slap her cheek. Vinette who didn’t expect that to happen was surprised at first, and then continued to wail, pleading her brother to jump in to save her.

“Stop, it hurts! Brother, help me!”

“You coward! Hands off my sister!” shrieked Devon who was also taken aback by Gesta’s action. But he was blocked by the guards under the command of Gesta.

“If you’re so eager to join your sister, then so be it! Guards, seize that mangy cur!” ordered Gesta who handed over Vinette to the other guards. “Bring them to the dungeon for the education they won’t find at school!”

No matter how much those two siblings struggled, the power of the grown-up men was of course not an equal match. Without any meaningful difficulties, they were dragged to place that Gesta appointed.
