CHAPTER THREE

The cat was Marcus. He happened to make his way behind the yellow tape. In fact, he actually looked like a cat today. He was dressed all in black, black jeans, a black turtleneck, and black shoes. He was light-skinned with wavy close-shaven hair with light brown eyes. His voice was a deep baritone, with a husky tone that came from smoking.

Marcus had managed to get into the building. As he was walking down the hall, he heard footsteps echoing behind him. When he stopped the footsteps stopped. When he walked, they walked? Checking it out he started walking and stopped, listening as he did so.  Sure enough, they were mimicking him.

Turning around to see who it was he saw no one.  Shaking off the feeling, he kept walking towards the studio.  All of a sudden, he heard running feet and Officer Peluso shouting, “Stop, you can’t be back here until after the investigation is complete.”  Continuing in a softer and quieter tone, Peluso said, “I know you may have important items in there but please let us do our work. Plus, you won’t do your friend any good by mucking up the waters. We are good at what we do.  Besides, Abdul is outside.  You know him, right?  Talk with him. “

Looking at him, Marcus considered disobeying the law and changed his mind. Slowly nodding his head, he turned to start walking back.  Officer Peluso, fell in step beside him.  Gauging how much to share with him, he took a friend’s advice and decided to share what he knew without revealing what he suspected.

“Your friend Mark is in really bad shape.  Had we gotten here any later, it may have been a death investigation. We can’t figure it out here.  Everything appears to be locked uptight.  No forced entry.  And yet, Mark was surprised. We don’t know what to make of it.  Maybe you guys will be able to help us out as the investigation goes on.”

Listening, Marcus felt he was missing something, but didn’t know what.  He was being told this. He didn’t want to assume that the officer thought him guilty of any foul play. No- he loved this group.  It gave him food on his table.  A proud mother at the same dinner table. A safe twin brother and sisters.  Hurrying his footsteps up he appeared to be running from the policeman, who taking notice tapped him on the shoulder.

When he got him to stop and pay attention, Peluso said to Marcus, “You go ahead and meet up with your friends. I have something to do here.”  When Marcus nodded, he turned and walked away with Peluso with concern watching him.

Shaking his head and standing in silence he listened to what he thought was an empty building.  Yep, he still heard what sounded like footsteps inside the building.  But all had checked.  No one was in the building.  He knew it wasn’t haunted, so he figured that someone had gotten in the back door. Which means the perpetrator of the crime could have done the same thing. Then he remembered, the front door was open and so was the back door until the guys were done by those doors. He will check on them before he goes back outside.
