Chapter - 7

Steven sat on a dining chair, his eyes wandered around everywhere but food in front of him. His mind was filled with so many thoughts.

Never before did he thought about the things he'll go through after his papa's death. It is as if he was numb. He didn’t just lose a father, He had lost a part of himself. He thought aloud "I lost the time I had in which I could do everything for him but I didn’t."

He tried to hold on but still a tear rolled down and dropped on the dining table right near the plate filled with buttered corns and a sandwich. Never have he ever felt tears after leaving childhood behind. They found their way to his eyes and now they aren't leaving. He was indulged in deep thoughts.

“I wish I lived with him forever. My life, my success, my job, nothing was more important than love between me and him. I should’ve been there to take care of him even if he always wanted me away. Even if he wanted all this, I shouldn’t have left Wakefield.” A deep regret crept inside him.

He glanced outside the window towards the sky and said “Mama! Papa! Forgive me please. I’ve tried to be an obedient son but I couldn’t be a supportive and caring one. I did what you wanted me to do but I never did what you needed. And now that I couldn’t be a good son, I can’t keep any part of your wealth” I don’t deserve such a marvelous mansion as my house for nothing. I must sell it and start a library in his name.

He pushed the chair out and took the breakfast with him to the kitchen and shoved it in the fridge.

Suddenly the phone rang. He looked at his phone which read ‘My Love’ on the screen.

“Hello darling” she said.

“Hello sweetheart” he said

“So, how is it going?” She asked the question for which I didn’t know the answer.

“Um, just a little tired. I couldn’t have adequate sleep last night. How are you doing?”

“Not again honey, what did you eat for breakfast?” Another question he didn’t want to answer.

“Nothing but some corns yet. John delivered me a sandwich that I'll have it soon after I end the call.”

“Eat well. And since work is off today, have some good sleep as well. Are you feeling sick or something?”

“Hmm. No, I’m fine. Beth" he took a deep breath and asked "Did something unusual happened lately?"

"No, why are you asking that?" She asked suspiciously.

"Just a bad feeling. Anyways, I think it's time to speak to our solicitor about the will. I did have a talk after the funeral but I told him clearly that if it isn't urgent then I'll speak about it later that's probably when I return back to Wakefield, but now I have a change in mind. The sooner it's done the better.

“Oh honey, don’t stress about it so much. You are going to come back on the end of this month right, you’ve got time. Think about it later”

“Yes, but when I come I was wondering if we should do something about…” He was interrupted by a doorbell at Beth’s side. “Sweetheart, I’ll call you later. Your cousin Lara was about to visit. I guess it's her at the door now. Just eat well and then sleep good darling. Take good care of yourself until I am by your side. Miss you, bye.”

“Miss you too, goodbye” as soon as he hung up the phone his stomach growled and he went back to kitchen for having breakfast. He wondered maybe it's too early to tell Beth about his idea of selling that property.

*******

I wondered why my room is colder than Hannah’s. I felt my bones crackled in this chilled weather. I got up and went towards to the window and moved the curtain. The sun raise were reaching me. I opened the heavy window and inhaled the warm air that touched my body. My mind abruptly jostled in confusion. It isn’t the weather that's cold it’s just my room. Isn't it unusual to hear whispers every night, feeling as cold as it used to be in Canada when infact it's summer in Wakefield.

I stood under a hot water still wondering about the things happening since... I don’t exactly know since when. All I could do is hope that this was the last time it is happening and it was maybe just a delusion.

I had a feeling deep inside me that I wanted to leave this place and go back to my home. Well 22 days seems too far.

There was a knock on the door “Stella! Are you going to spend whole day in there?”

“I’m done” I said with a raised voice, wore my bath gown and before stepping out I noticed a greyish web-like patch in a corner of the ceiling. I stared at it for a while and said "This is... unusual". I went to my room to get dressed.

“So what’s today’s plan” I asked Jay, the one who actually wanted to go somehwere but was just relaxing on a sofa and constantly changing the channels. “Nowhere, I already have a plan with Chris” he replied.

“With Chris? What?” so everyone can have plans with Chris except me. 'Great' I thought.

“He is going to bring me his Xbox within…” He was interrupted with the sound of the loud bell. “There he is.”

"That'd be Mr. Daniels" he intended the coolness.

I was taken aback. I stood there motionless. His name reminded me of Mrs. Chris Daniels-to-be. Yes, I'm talking about Natalie whoever. Oh my, am I over reacting. I don't even have crush on him right? Definitely not, maybe.

"Aren't you going to open the doors?" Jay asked.

"I... Why should I when he came for you?" I frowned and went to the dining room not caring plus I was hungry.

"Because you were standing" he said and he opened the door himself.

"Hey brother" He tapped Jay's back

"C'mon in" Jay tried pulling his backpack.

"Easy boy, you're going get your toy for sure" He laughed "Where are the girls at?" looking around

"Hannah is in the backyard and Moody Myrtle is in the dining room"

"Moody what?" Chris chuckled.

"You know what you know"

"I'll go check on the latter" Chris handed him the game box and headed towards the kitchen, watched me from the kitchen window. I was drinking milk while I saw him but I ignored him. He smiled to himself and entered the kitchen.

"Hey there Moody Myrtle" He said and I wished to throw whole glass of milk all over him but Hershey's syrup was too tasty to do that. I ignored him once again.

"Ok let me try again. Hey there Stella the stunner". Blush crept in automatically as he said these words in a tone that did magic. I ignored him once more but couldn't hide pinkish cheeks.

"Well you're always around stunning girls, and that makes me no different".

"Oh" He said thoughtfully then smiled mischievously at me "I know just one more stunning girl other than you" He added smiling warmly "but your innocence outdoes her stunningness too."

I couldn't believe he actually thinks so "Really?"

"Yes"

All my jealousy drowned out at his words and I couldn't help but smile.

He noticed my smile and said "Now you look complete".Oh god, could this guy stop being so nice. He just tried to lift up my mood without even knowing that he was the reason. Guys like him aren't real, is he real?"Yes he is" I said aloud"Did you say something?"

"No" I felt my cheeks burning again.

"Joining for the game?" He pointed his thumb back towards the living room.

"Yes, but only if it's Need For Speed".

Jay was behind the tv set plugging-in Chris' Xbox. "Ready" he dusted off his hands and handed us the controls. We played for hours without realizing its almost afternoon. We spent the two hours straight eating, drinking while playing and calling eachother 'Cheater'.

I felt the need to pee. I continued to play trying not to ruin the fun. After a minute I started tapping my feet with the urge to control. Hannah entered the hall. As soon as I saw her I jumped and handed her my controller "I'm done playing, you can continue my game, Buh bye".

"No problem, because I haven't done my nails yet" she gripped the controller tight "So be ready to lose guys"

The guys booed her and started a new race.

I went to the nearest toilet possible. I hurried through the hanging beads.

In the deep silence, plop sound broke the silence. A drop of oil like black liquid dropped right in front of me. My eyes widened I quickly lifted my head to gaze right above. Found no trace of anything that could cause to drip something black. I was done I stood up tried not to step over but I accidentally did it with my right foot and quickly pulled it back only to find that the black thing dissappeared. I turned over my slippers to see any sign of it but there was none.

Okay. This is beyond unusual.

Was it me thinking about the dream again or something in this house is actually not right? If it's in my mind then I'm definitely going crazy.

At that moment I decided that next thing I was going to do was to tell Mom, Hannah and Jay everything that has been happening.

Maybe it's too much of Need for Speed that drove me crazy. 'Drove me crazy, no pun intended' my brain can have humor in any situation.
