Chapter 7: OJT III

“Kane!” Carlo immediately pulled him when his feet were rooted on the ground.

He slightly trembled at the sight of the hole on the ground where the Yeti’s fist landed. He would’ve broken a few bones had it been him. The strength of the Yeti wasn’t something to be taken lightly and he was slightly frightened when he was being targeted by them.

He held his breath when Xander suddenly stood behind him and used repulsion on the Yeti that sneakily attacked from behind. He bit his lips when the other Yetis roared and tried to attack him again. They even ignored the people that was protecting him. It was as if all they wanted to do was to kill him.

The actions of the Yetis were so unpredicted and he was confused. He wasn’t strong and he wouldn’t have done anything that might threaten the monsters so why did it seem like they were all so eager to kill him?

He couldn’t stop shaking when he felt all the malice from the Yetis that was glaring at him. What could it be? Their reaction wasn’t normal and it would be important data to know why the monsters only wanted him.

Two Yetis attacked once again and one of Xander’s groupmate blocked the attack for him. However, he was deeply wounded because they didn’t expect another one to join in on the attack.

“Jeffrey!” Xander shouted but he was busy fighting off the Yetis to approach the guy who was held by Kane as soon as he dropped.

Another Yeti lounged at Kane and since he didn’t have reflexes as fast as the other hunters, he just covered his head with his arms and waited for the pain to come to him. However, nothing like that happened. Carlo shot the eyes of the Yeti that was about to attack him.

“What have you done, Kane? Are you trying to sabotage us?” Carlo asked with a disappointed tone as he parried the Yeti’s attack towards him.

Kane couldn’t answer. He didn’t know what was the cause of the problem. All he knew was that he could’ve done something to aggravate the Yeti. But what could it be?

The healer approached them and healed Jeffrey’s arms. Kane was shocked when the healer shot a glare at him and pushed him away.

“What are you playing at?” He pulled his teammate from Kane. If it wasn’t for Xander, Kane would have been attacked because none of them ever tried to protect Kane after the healer shouted.

“What did I do?” Kane asked. They could’ve just told him what he did wrong.

He would’ve accepted their hostility towards him if he actually knew what he did. However, he was clueless. Wouldn’t it be better if he knew so that he could at least correct it?

“You didn’t know? Are you trying to act clueless now?” The man who hurt his arm asked with an annoyed tone.

Why were they suddenly accusing him? What did he do so wrong for them to act that way?

“Xander, stop protecting him! He was the one who led the Yeti’s here in the first place,” the man added.

He was even more confused after what he heard. Did he just say that he was the one who led the Yetis towards their location?

“We welcomed you and this is what you do to us?” Carlo grabbed him by the collar.

He glared at Carlo since he didn’t want the way he was being treated. Why did he have to receive hostility from them when they wouldn’t even tell him what he did wrong?

“Why don’t you tell me what was the problem instead of accusing me of something I don’t even know?” Kane spat. His tone was serious and there was a warning with his every word.

“You sprayed a musk that attracts monsters! Don’t tell us that you did it to acquire more information because we’re not buying that!” Carlo shouted as he pushed him to the ground.

Kane clenched his fist. Was it true that hunters only have muscles for brains? Why would he even spray something that might cause his death? There was no need for him to sacrifice himself just for the sake of the improvement of his job. That was so pointless he couldn’t even believe that someone would’ve come up with that kind of idea.

But Kane kept his silence. He couldn’t find the need to explain himself to such idiots. If they already made up their minds to close him off, nothing he could do would ever change their minds.

He stood up and walked away from him but Carlo blocked his path. “Where are you going?”

“Somewhere where I wouldn’t be able to threaten your lives,” he answered nonchalantly.

“How arrogant. Aren’t you even ashamed that you caused trouble for people who were trying hard to do his job right?” The healer asked in an irritated tone.

Again, Kane didn’t utter a word. He had a habit of letting dumb people stay dumb and live their own incompetent lives. He didn’t want to bother clearing up his name.

He was about to walk away from them when a voice suddenly called out to him.

“Why are you leaving when it’s not even your fault?” Xander asked as soon as he was in front of Kane. “Were you dumb enough to do something that could get yourself killed inside a dungeon?” He asked with a curious childlike tone.

The team looked at each other with a confused expressions. They turned their attention back from Kane and Xander who seemed to be talking about the dress for the event.

“It wasn’t him. It was Kristoff and Brandon who sprayed the musk when he wasn’t looking.”

Carlo and the others looked at Kristoff with a deadly glare. “Do you want to kill us all!?”

Kristoff was about to explain himself but they heard a loud roar from the inside of the woods. Did the boss monster smell Kane too?
