“Mom, what happening again?” Javi asked intending to go out and check

“Stop! Don’t go out. Stay here. Let me check.” I stopped him before he could even take the step. What if we were attacked at that moment? I didn’t want any accidents. “Hide under the bed at the corner” I said to Javi as I took my rod and peeped outside.

People were running away from the dining. I saw Dan and her mother running towards me. “What happening?” I asked her standing at the door. She pushed me inside and closed the door behind her. She looked shocked. Holding her chest hard to calm down

“The lady you came with, she turned into one of those things. She bit Daniel. It happened too fast I ran among the people to leave but things are crazy. They are fighting and biting each other”

“What. Teacher Monica turned? But she wasn’t bit… wait…. She looked sick” I said the last part almost to myself. My worry was the old couple. I didn’t see them with their weapons during dinner. “What about the old couple we came with?” I asked her once again very fast

“I don’t know. I didn’t look.” She answered before pacing up and down in the room. Dan went to sit on the bed. I looked at him. “Dan, go hide under that bed at the corner with Javi. Don’t come out even when the room is attacked. No one will find you there. Don’t make any noise and don’t get out until I come.” He did not waste a minute and run to the last bed. “You too, go and hide as well” I said to his mother before going out.  The screaming was too much. I went slowly towards the dining and the scene was devastating.

In that few minutes, everyone in the room was dead. They all turned. I could see blood on the floor.

Peeping from the wall of the corridor, my stomach churned. The plates, food were scattered on the floor. The tables was turned. The chairs were thrown everywhere. It was a mess. Some of the people were lying on the floor dead. I could see some of the kids we saved before were lying on the floor covered in blood.

“Ooh my God… the kids.” I could not help but mourn for them. I tried to see the old couple but, they were not among the infected. The infected were all banging on the door leading to the warehouse.

Looking carefully, I saw old Kibali peeking through the glass window on the door. He shook his head at me. I nodded and went back inside. I closed the door behind and waited for a while.

“Are they all right?”

“No. they are all dead even the children.” I answered her. Looking at her arm, I could see a clear bite mark. I didn’t want to scare the kids.

“I want you to help me with something. It’s not hard. It’s something you can do.” I said to Dan’s mother. She nodded following me to the bathroom making sure we make no noise. Getting inside, I found three people hiding indie. I didn’t know then but I saw Peter the guy who showed us the place. He was holding a spade in his hand

The moment we entered, he had the spade ready to strike us.

“Whoa. Watch out.” I said to him and he stopped midair. “Whoop I almost chopped you.” He said jokingly but you could see he was scared.

“What is the situation out there?” Peter asked

“Things will be worse if we wait longer. We need to get rid of them to be safe.” I said to them

“Then what should we do?”

“I was thinking of one by one. We lead them here and allow one by one in and kill them.”

“That would be risky. We don’t have an escape route in case things go south.” Peter analyzed the situation looking at the bathroom

“We would’ve trapped ourselves” One of the women in the bathroom said. I found out Dan’s mother was Esther. She was standing at the corner feeling cold and at the same time    sweating profusely.

One of the women went to her and asked her. “Are you okay? The woman asked Esther. Without looking at the woman, Esther answered her

“I am okay just a bit out of weather.”  The woman looked at her questioningly before going back to the other woman and whispered something to her

 I moved to Esther and pulled her aside. “How did you get bit?” she looked surprised as I pointed at the spot on her arm where there was a clear bike mark

“No.No… I don’t want to be one of those things. This can’t be. My family. My kid.” She broke down completely. I tried to hug her but she pushed me away from her

“ Stay away.” She said sobbing. At that time one f her eyes was turning yellow while the other was okay

“ We  have to kill he before she turn. She will kill us.” One of the women in the bathroom said

“No. you can’t kill her. She is still human

“What human. You saw Daniel and his girlfriend. They killed everyone in a matter of seconds. I don’t want that happening here again”

“Don’t worry. That will not happen” I said looking at Esther. I dint know what to do with her at that moment

“Please. I don’t want to turn into those things. Just kill me.” She said in between sobs. “Please take care of my child. Find his father. He is one of the research officers at the KIMRI research facility. His name is James” She said trying to hold her breath. She was losing it

“Okay I will.” I said to her and she sighed in relief

“Give me the weapon. I will help where I can. My son is in here. I will do something for him” she said standing straight taking the spade from Peter. Peter walked few steps away handing her the spade. She then opened the door widely and locking it in a thud.

Approaching snarling sounds became closer to the door from where we were. I felt my body give way thinking of what might happen when we are out all alone. I could imagine what Esther was feeling at that moment
