02. The Overbearing Uncle Desmond

The atmosphere is cool, a little too cool  to warm the numb feeling that engulfed Lekan to the max. He sat in the chair, his feet almost touching the ground. The series of events that occurred of late had not left him for the better and he had not known how to cope with it.

It was a miracle he was still alive, that he had been told. The car had gone up in flames the moment it went airborne but yet he was still here. of course, he had not gone all scot free from the accident. He had gotten some burns, minor but that was it.

After he had gotten treatment, the news had been broken down to him.

His parents had not survived the incident. In fact when thy had been rescued, the parents had all been burnt beyond recognition. Strange enough, Lekan did not know how to feel about it. Maybe because he felt like all of these had happened before or maybe it was because of the fact that his parents had been the one arguing in the car right before the accident, all because of him. Or maybe it was because of the fact that if he had gotten better grades in school then all of what occurred may just have never happened.

Perhaps, he was a curse to the history of the family, one that had to be purged because no matter how anyone wanted to look at it, it was all because of him that this had happened.

But then again, a part of him did not want to agree with this notion. He had been a bright student. It was not his fault that his father would want him to be in the science class when he was not cut out for it. In his father's words, any other classes besides the science classes were jampacked with people who did not have a future ambition to pursue. It was full with people who thought that somewhere along the line, they would discover their true purpose to life and then when they did, they would then be able to live accordingly to that.

It was the fool's way out. Still, personally, he liked it. It was what he wanted.

Being in the science Class meant that he needed to be better good at math. And by all of the heavens, his eyes hurt at the numbers. He could not take it but what would his father want to hear? That did not go down with his father.

It was the very reason why when he had been filling his admission form, his father had taken the slip from him and chosen the science class for him. It was all that he could do not to resent him for being weak minded towards math.

He had gotten in, of course but that was it. He did not have the aptitude to pursue excellence  in a course of study that his father had chosen for him. Who would want to do that in the first place? It was like living the life of someone else. It was not reasonable and he had sworn to himself that he would rather not give that old man the joy he was searching for in trying to make him study sciences. It was not his thing and so, he had been prepared to give the studies of his educational path all the lack of attention he could possibly give.

He sighed not, holding his head as he shuddered to himself. Still, even though this was it, it was not what he wanted. He never wanted for them to die. Not in the very least. He never wished for them to become ones of the beyond. He still wanted to live and have them in the many areas that they were there for him.

Now that they were both dead, who would be there for him when he needed a mum to fuss over? Who would be there for him when he needed the bucks of cash to flaunt about? His life was about to take a drastic turn over for  the worse and he was not ready for it.

'For the worse?' He sighed to himself mentally.

Maybe he as overthinking the whole thing now. How was his life going to take a turn for the worse? But then, a part of him chided him, telling him to remember how things had been when he had been living with his Uncles, Uncle Desmond.

"Wait... Uncle Desmond is dead..." Lekan swallowed his spittle as he frowned. "How can I be thinking of dead Uncle Desmond?" He stammered.

"I am not dead. Why would you wish for me to be dead. It is your parents who are dead." A masculine voice resounded in the room.

Lekan licked his dry, parched lips looking up to the sound of the clicking heels in the room. It was a man wearing a white shirt and blue trousers on. he had a box shaped line of beard over his lips and his eyes were squeezed together in a perpetual state of frowning. He had a brown belt on and gold tinted cufflinks on the wrist of his white shirt. Behind him was another man in a black two piece suit,  having a white shirt on as well.

Lekan frowned at this even more. He knew the one who was in front. It was his overbearing Uncle Desmond but the one who was behind him. the face was not familiar in anyway.

The one who was behind  did not say a word except to look briefly at the direction of Lekan as he sat in the black sofa and then take the one which was just opposite him, that is, the long two seater settee.

Having sat down now, he brought his brief case and then pulled a stool from the side if the settee on which he placed the briefcase, his eyes still locked on to Lekan. After doing that, he dipped his hand into his pocket, the trouser pocket and then pulled out a black case, from which he brought out a pair of square rimmed glasses, just similar to the one his father had worn. Except that in this case, the edges were tinted gold. \

Then, the mister took a cursory look around the white walled room, observing the picture of the family which was framed and placed behind him before then clearing his throat as he watched the plasma TV for a bit.

Although it was off, the man seemed to be watching the screen  and when Lekan coughed , he shook his head, sighing out. He brought his focus down to his brief case just when Uncle Desmond returned to the room with a tray of bottled wine and two glasses, which he placed on the brown mahogany center table and then proceeded to open the wine bottle.

"Greeting Heir to the house, Lekan. I am the family Lawyer, Mr Awopegba." He said and then sighed once more.

"Family lawyer or some guy who is looking for what to steal from this house?" Lekan muttered, his eyes revealing discontent at the figure who was seated before him. "Don't think I did not catch you looking hungrily at the things in the house."

"Lekan.., Behave..." Desmond called out sharply, looking over his shoulder at Lekan.

"I am just saying. He looks like a thief." Lekan blasted out, shooting up from his seat.

"You would sit. NOW!" Desmond swirled around ,his eyes blazing out in rage.

"What? This is not even your house and already you have gone in to take Daddy's favorite wine bottle? How much do you intend to steal from them just because they are gone?" Lekan harrumphed.
