Enchanted

Sam waited for his estranged mother to respond but was only met with her blank stares.

“How long has my baby sister been like this?” Chris turned to Ramon.

“For the post two weeks. We’re had to make sure she eats every day. Half of the time one of our nurses have had to spoon feed her? Speaking of which, it’s time for her lunch.”

As Sam tries to reach out to his mother, a young nurse with light brown skin rolls in a cart with a plate of food on it.

“Is this a bad time,” the noise says.

“Sheriff, this is Onika. She’s a new nurse in training.” Ramon said as he turned to Onika. Give us ten minutes.”

“What,” Sam said, morning to Onika. “Can I bring her lunch to her?”

“I don’t think that’s the best idea.” Ramon said.

“It’s his mother,

The boy hasn’t seen her in person for over ten years. Chris said.

“I understand Sheriff but I could get in trouble if anything happens to LaToya or any of you.”

“I can handle my sister. Let the boy feed his mother.”

Sam made his way to the cart as Onika lifted the try and handed it to him.

“Good to see you again, Spi Boy.” Onika smiled as her checks blushed pink.

“Please don’t call me that.” Sam smiled back, showing his pale white teeth. “Sam,” Chris eye browed his nephew.

“Right”

Sam took the tray from Onika and carried it to his mom.

“Are you hungry, mom?”

LaToya continued to rock in her chair barley noticing her son in front of her.

“I can feed you if you want.” Sam said.

Sam lifted the sandwich to his mother who suddenly LaToya leaped at him knocking the food away and squeezed her son’s wrist as she pinned him to the ground.

“LaToya,” Chris yelled as he and Ramon ran to save Sam.

But LaToya waved her hand, costing purple spiritual energy do throw them cross the wall.

Onika ducked before their bodies could hit her.

“Kukataavodoni.” LaToya chanted as her grip on Sam begun to butch at his flesh.”

“Mom, stop. You’re hurting me.”

“Kukataavodoni, Kukataa vodoni.”

“Sammy” Onika yelled running to his aid.

But LaToya thrusted her palm toward Onika and propelted her to the wall, pinning her body against it.

“Onika.” Sam called out.

Her body began to be absorbed into the wall as Chris and Ramon layed unconscious.

“Kukataavodoni, kukataavodoni.”

“Stop please.” Sam cried & struggling to break through his mother.

“Sammy.” Onika called out before her mouth became covered by the well. “Please don’t make me do this, mom.

“Kukataavodoni, kukataavodoni.”

LaToya chanted.

Sam fought back the tears in his eyes and the pain inflicted by his own mother as he regretfully fought back.

“Rohoyawassiiliteswa.” Sam chatedbefore opening his eyes and casting green spiritual energy from this body.

The blast pushed LaToya, knocking her against the wall behind her, and kendering her unconscious.

Onika was freed from LaToya’s Ramon fell to the ground, sleeping instantly as Onika made her way to Sam.

“Onika, you’re a voodooist? Chris asked:

“Yes, Sir. Now unfortunately thanks to this incident, so it Sam”

Onika tended to Sam’s wounds as Chris propped Ramon on an empty chair before lifting up his sister.

“Hold still.” Onika said as she softly caressed Sam’s wrist. “Ponyamkonohou”

Pink spiritual energy seeped from her hands, covering Sam’s wrist as they began to heal themselves.

“That’s a neat little trick.” Sam said.

“Simple healing spell. If you practiced with the covens you could have done it yourself.”

“You know why I could practice with you guys.”

“We could have protected you. We still could you know.”

“Young lady as much as I appreciate your help, I would also appreciate you to keep your coven as far away from my nephew as possible.”

“Uncle Chris, you saw what happened to the Chow Pow. Maybe the coven, isn’t a bad idea.”

“I have told you before that the coven is off limits. Ever since your mother….”

“I’m not my mom. I won’t end up like her.”

“Your damn right you won’t because you are not joining those people.”

“Those people are like family to me, Sheriff.” Onika said.” Things have changed since Mr. Sting and ColondEthol left.

Sam’s heart fluttered and his teeth nibbled on his lip as her heard his father’s name.

“I would thank you to not bring up my late brother in laws name.” Chris frowned.

“I’m sorry.” Onika said, her hands holding each other. Colonel Harrison Ethol was a beloved return in New Orleans. Even my dad admitted his respect for him.”

“Funny, everyone talks about my old man but I never had a chance to meet him.” Sam admitted.” I don’t even have the gold watch he gave to my mom.”

“The pockets watch?”

“You know where it is?” said Chris.

“I do. Follow me.”

Onika helped Chris put LaToya in bed and then she left the room for a brief second. “May be it was a mistake to bring you here.” The Sherieff said.

“Where else was I suppose to go?” Sam replied. “Besides, I had to see my mom again.”

“I don’t want it to happen like this. I wanted to wait until you were old enough to handle seeing her.”

“You’ve been saying that for years.” Every time I bring her up, you brush it off.”

“She attacked you, Sam.”

“May be because she needs my help. If you hit me, joined the coven……

“Absolutely not.”

“Why not?”

“There is more to that coven then you know.” Chris said. “You’ll just have to trust me about…”

“I found it.”

Onika came back into the room with a locked metal box in her hands. “We keep any personal items that belongs to the patients locked away so they can’t use them to hurt themselves.

“We keep any personal items that belong to the patients locked away so they can’t use them to hurt themselves.

We’ll finish this later.” Chris said to Sam.

“Am I interrupting something?”

“No. You good, Onika.” Sam answered.

Onika reached in her pocket and plulled out a pair of keys to unlock the box. She lifted the lid and offered it to Sam.

The young voodooist looked into the box to find the golden watch and a picture of a man and a woman with a symbol of a hornet on the man’s forehead.

“Who are these people?”

Chris walked over and let out a sigh of dread.

“Sam that is Donald and Clea Sting. They were amongst some of the most notorious serial killers in New Orleans.”

Chris pressed his hand on Sam’s shoulder before continuing his sentence.

“They are also your grandparents.”
