Richard and Daisy didn't really understand what Clair was saying to the mayor. But, from the way the mayor had treated Richard, it was obvious Clair had spoken badly of Richard. Of course Daisy was annoyed by that but there was something else that irritated Daisy even more, that was, Richard apparently accepted the expulsion without defending himself or trying to set things straight.
