Chapter 4: Awaken
“What the heck does this mean?”Grey muttered in a confused manner, as he stared at the floating screen in front of him.He reached out his hand to touch the words, but found that his hand and arm went past the words, not even touching them.He didn't understand what was going on, so he figured he might as well-read the words on the floating screen.[Congratulations, you have awakened the system.]- You have been rewarded with 10 free stat points.[Daily Quest Now Available][You have killed a zombie.][Level Up!] - All stats increased by 1 - You have been rewarded with 2 free stats points - Loot: 5 gold coin“Stats? Level up? Loot? Quest”Grey muttered, that sounded like terms from video games.Grey pursed his lips in thought as he wondered if what he was seeing was real, or if he had hit his head and this was a dream.Heck, the whole zombie apocalypse could be a whole big dream. But then Grey remembered the ferocity of the zombies, the pain he felt when it broke his ribs, the death of Jace, which caused him to shook his head.It was real, alright. If this was a video game, he wondered if it was going to show his stats. As soon as he thought that, the system rang again, once again.Tti-ring!Name: Grey BlackwoodLevel: 2Race: HumanClass: NoneTitle: NoneHP: 210MP: 22[Stat]Strength: 11Stamina: 11Agility: 11Intelligence: 11Perception: 11(Available point to distribute: 12)[Skills]- Passive Skills:@*¥%& Lv max- Active Skills: None[Abilities: ]1. Electricity ManipulationSkills Unlocked:[Electric Weaponry] : Charges melee weapons with lightning, enhancing their damage. - Lightning Slice (Unlocked)“Electric Weaponry.” Grey muttered, and under it was an unlocked skill [Lightning Slice]. It was the skill he had used to defeat the zombie. If the system applied to real life, and he had unknowingly used this skill when he had struck the zombie, then his attack made perfect sense.Grey didn't understand how he even managed to awaken whatever the system in the first place. He wondered if it was because he stepped on a live wire, is why his ability was electric manipulation. Grey found it difficult to believe it wasn't somehow related to him getting electrocuted. If that was the case, he wondered what would happen if he dipped his hand inside fire. Would he gain fire abilities?“Nah,” he shook his head, laughing it off as ridiculous. It didn't make sense to think like that. But when he thought of it, nothing that was happening currently really made sense.Grey had come to his office like every normal day to work. But now fighting zombies who were his former co-workers, and was now seeing words floating in the air. Nothing made sense, everything that happened all too suddenly. However, Grey knew that if he wanted to survive whatever the hell was going on, he was going to have to accept things a lot quicker and adapt to the irregularities. He looked at the screen again and placed his focus on his skills. He saw he had two types of skills, Active and Passive.Active required a cost of a certain amount of magic point, while passive didn't.And the only passive skill he had, read gibberish, but it was maxed out. There was no way he couldn't understand what it was, so he turned his attention to his abilities.[Devour]He could take the abilities of those he defeated. It sounded powerful. He could imagine having 100 abilities and using it to wreak havoc on his enemies. There was also something that bothered him about what he read. When the system said 'those you defeat' was it referring to the zombies, humans or both.If it was zombies the system was referring to, then that meant, he would eventually come across a zombie with special abilities. The thought of it made his muscles tense as he imagined fighting a zombie with telekineses, or teleportation.“But if it was human?”Grey said in a low voice, staring at the system for a reply or a sort of explanation, but nothing came. Grey sighed. He was going to find out what it meant eventually, so he chose to ignore it at the moment.Right now, the only things he had to kill, to survive now, were zombies. But deep down, Grey knew, that with the chaos the apocalypse would bring, human would begin to kill one another.Grey sighed, he decided to focus on what he had now.He opened the Daily Quest.Tti-ring[Daily Quest Now Available][Kill 20 Necrotic: 1/30][Penalties: Unknown][Reward:] - Full Recovery - 5 Free Stats Point - A Special Equipment[Time Limit: 23:59:23]The daily quest had counted the zombies he killed from the moment he awakened, which meant he had only a single kill.As Grey read the panel, he narrowed his eyes. By daily quest, he figured the system would require him to do it every day. Also, the time limit was one day and if he failed, he was going to get a penalty. Grey was curious as to what these penalties were, but the system didn't reveal any details. The rewards looked good though, full recovery of health point, free stats point to distribute and also special equipment. Grey didn't know the details of the last one but ‘special’ didn't sound like something ordinaryAlso, the system had called the zombies, necrotic creatures.Necrotic?Grey wondered, it sounded like a sort of virus. What if it was what had infected humans, turning them into zombies? If that was the case, what was the origin of it?So many questions he wanted to ask, but had no answer to.Growl!Grey heard sounds coming from up the stairs, and he then looked up and saw the zombies were coming from the 6th floor.“Guess they finally managed to break the door.”Grey grinned, feeling a lightness in his chest. He gripped his axe and bounced on his toes, readying himself, seeing this as an opportunity to see if the system was the real deal or if he was just suffering from severe hallucination. The zombie climbed down the stairs slowly, as if careful not to fall.Grey walked towards it and when it saw him, it scratched at his face agitated, but Grey casually cocked his hand backwards, and swung his axe activating [Lightning Slice]Swish! The zombie head easily fell off its body, just like the first one.Grey grinned excitedly. His abilities were real, which meant the system could really make him stronger.Grey could feel the strange energy coursing through his body.He stared at his tingling arm intently.“Is this mana?” Grey said softly as goosebumps slid across the back of his neck.According to the system, what had enabled him to use the lighting slice was his mana.He began to focus on it and attempted to manipulate it. It worked. He felt it move according to how he had imagined. But then as soon as attempted to try it again, his connection with it disappeared.“Hmm.”Grey grunted. Though he could manipulate the flow, it required his total concentration. He decided to practice it later, so he could focus on hunting down the zombiesHe began to climb dealing with the zombies, one by one.Four more zombies approached him, and he dispersed them using [Lightning slice].The more he used the skill, closer he was able to connect to his energy and manipulate it.One more to go.This time, Grey decided to try something different. He made a stabbing motion instead of the usual slice, which released a bolt of lightning as it pierced into the zombie, making a gaping hole in its chest.Tti-ring- [Lightning Stab] UnlockedRequirement: Melee WeaponCost: 3 manaGrey eyes widened in discovery.“Don't tell me…" (⊙_◎)Chapter 5: Hard DecisionsBeing able to manipulate his mana was the key to unlocking other skills under [Electric manipulation].He check his panel and saw a new skill was added under electric weaponry.[Abilities: ]1. Devour: Cosume the abilities of those you defeat. Requirement: Physical Touch.2. Electricity ManipulationSkills Unlocked:[Electric Weaponry:] Charges melee weapons with lightning, enhancing their damage. Requirement: Melee Weapon - Lightning Slice (Unlocked) - Lightning Stab (Unlocked)The way he directed his mana to use [Lightning Stab] was more different from when he used [Lightning Slice]. This had enabled him to unlock the new skill.Though the difference was minute, Grey was able to sense the change.Grey wondered what would happen if he could fully manipulate his mana. He would be able to activate new skills by being creative with his mana flow. Grey grinned joyously, he had so many ideas but for now, he wanted to level up and increase his mana pool. He f
Chapter 6: Essence?Meanwhile, in a luxury hotel on the same street as Grey office. A group of men fought with the zombies. They used weapons like bats, steel pipes, and knives to fight the zombies. Each one of them showed considerable strength. But one of them stood that, he blitzed among the zombies with unnatural speed and then sheathed his katana.Plop!Plop!Plop! The head of the zombies fell off their bodies, and they dropped succeeding. This man was the second in command of one of the biggest gangsters in the city. His name was Draco. With the zombie dealt with, a charismatic man in a white suit walked toward the hallway.“Boss”“Boss”The men hurriedly made a path and greeted with a bow, even the swift swordsman was no exception. The man took out a cigarette and lit it up without any external fire.He has quite bulky, and his face was covered with a beard. This was Bunta, the boss of the Alleyway Kings. A savvy urban gang, adept at evasion and ruthless in crime.“So what did
“System Disabled?” Grey read the penalty and reread it again, refusing to believe what he was seeing.“This must be a joke right?!” Grey said, his voice quivering. He was going to have to fight the hulkalean zombie or he'll lose the system. The zombie noticed Grey and welcomed him with a ear defeaning roar.It rose to its feet, revealing its full body, a hulking ball of muscles. It regarded him with almost human eyes and insatiable hunger which made Grey shiver.Ah I'm f*cked...yep, the system had f*cked me up. It was intimidating and looking really strong which caused Grey to gulp. He grit his teeth and steeled his resolve. He had no choice but the fight. The zombie charged towards Grey with surprising speed, and punched but Grey was able to dodge.Baam! It's fist smashed into the wall and Grey leaped away from it. It was fast, more agile than your regular zombie. The juggernaut pursued after Grey, launching its blows in a frenzy. Grey evaded it's attacks not getting a chance t
The zombie roared, enraged that Grey had taken his arm. It charged at Grey with the intent to pummel him with a single fist. However, as the zombie's fist almost hit Grey, a sphere of lightning blasted out of him, pushing the zombie backward. The muscular zombie tottered to the rear with a pained grunt as electricity coursed into his body. It was surprised that the human who had fled from its attacks, like an annoying rat, was somehow stronger than before and now able to fight back. The look of defiance in Grey's eyes pissed it off, and it roared loudly in annoyance, before rushing towards Grey with the intent to bludgeon him into a bloody pulp.Grey grinned at the power he was able to unleash. He had managed to create a move that boosted his ability and that made him excited. But he knew he was running on limited time; there was no point to the boost if he couldn't use it to defeat the zombie.Focusing his attention on the beast, he readied himself. The zombie threw out a fast and fi
Vruummmm!A vibratory sound rang in Grey's head and his eyes shot wide open. He immediately sat up and looked around, wondering where the weird noise came from. “That certainly wasn't normal.”Grey muttered and brushed his bedsheet aside. He rolled out of his bed and walked towards the window to look out. The morning was just beginning, so barely anyone was outside. Grey glanced at the wall clock and saw it was 6:00 am, and decided it was time to prepare for work.He stretched his arm which revealed his slim body toned with solid muscles, that showed he worked out a lot. Grey took his bath, got dressed, had a small meal, and headed to work. As he got out his apartment, he noticed a man slowly hitting himself on the door of a shop. It was one of his noisy neighbors who was always drunk and had a wife who constantly nagged at him for not taking care of the kids.‘Well at least they knew who their parents were’Grey would mutter. Unlike them, he was an orphan, who didn't know who hi
Chapter 2: Elevator“What the hell, it's real!”Jace exclaimed in a panicked voice, finally realizing what was happening.Wendy shambled forward, blood drooling from her mangled lips.Grey grabbed his chair and climbed the table, before leaping over to Jace side and hitting the chair on Greta's face, which sending her backwards. She charged once again, but Grey used the chair to push her backward. He slammed the chair in her face, her body fell to the ground. Grey then began to ram the chair down continuously. With a final hit, Grey heard a crunch, which came from the zombies' skull. Wendy was dead. He had killed her.“No,” Grey shook his head. “Not her, it.”Wendy was nothing human, in fact, she was more dead than alive. More zombies were approaching them with the rest of them hunting down the human among them.Wendy wasn't the only one infected. About 70% of them had turned into zombies, and they were all biting at chewing at those unturned.Jace was shocked by this, but Grey gri
Chapter 3: Live WireGrey cursed as the zombies swarmed towards Jace. “Grey, don't worry about me…leave” Jace yelled as he ran back into the office.Grey saw this and began to worry they were still zombies back there, Jace was going to get pincered.Grey wanted to move to aid him, but the zombies were unrelenting. Even worse, more of them were attracted by the noise.*Punch**Kick**Shove*Grey hit fast and fierce, but the zombie didn't feel anything and kept crawling back with more intensity. It just wasn't enough to overcome the zombie tenacity. Grey was disadvantaged, he had to be careful as a single bite might be enough to turn him into one of them. If only he had a weapon. But he was in an accounting firm, where the hell was he going to find one.Grey then remembered there should be a fire axe right beside the fire extinguisher for emergencies. Grey ran towards it and a zombie followed. He hurriedly got rid of the glass cover, grabbed the fire axe and swung it down the head
