Chapter 3: Live Wire

Chapter 3: Live Wire

Grey cursed as the zombies swarmed towards Jace.

“Grey, don't worry about me…leave” Jace yelled as he ran back into the office.

Grey saw this and began to worry they were still zombies back there, Jace was going to get pincered.

Grey wanted to move to aid him, but the zombies were unrelenting. Even worse, more of them were attracted by the noise.

*Punch*

*Kick*

*Shove*

Grey hit fast and fierce, but the zombie didn't feel anything and kept crawling back with more intensity. It just wasn't enough to overcome the zombie tenacity.

Grey was disadvantaged, he had to be careful as a single bite might be enough to turn him into one of them.

If only he had a weapon.

But he was in an accounting firm, where the hell was he going to find one.

Grey then remembered there should be a fire axe right beside the fire extinguisher for emergencies. Grey ran towards it and a zombie followed.

He hurriedly got rid of the glass cover, grabbed the fire axe and swung it down the head of the approaching zombie.

The axe feasting on brain and bone.

The zombie stopped moving its body, growing limb, as it fell to the ground.

Grey ripped out the axe with a forceful pull, and made a note not smash into their head, as it would be hard to take out the axe.

Grey charged towards the rest of the zombie, welding the fire axe as it chopped and sliced decayed flesh with savage fury.

Grey movement became smoother, cutting limbs and joints to reduce the zombie movement.

With the size of the axe, it wasn't easy to finish them, so his plan was to disable them, so it would get the chance to help.

“Ahh!”

Grey could hear Jace pained screams, which fueled him to fight more aggressively. He feared the worst. Two left, he didn't waste time. He shoved them to the ground.

Before hurriedly running back to the office, Jace had to flee in.

“Jace!”

Grey yelled, running to the office.

He stood at the entrance of the room and searched for Jace there it was…

Jace laid on the ground, his body covered with gore, some chunk of his flesh bitten off.

He was too late.

“No!”

Grey said in a shaky voice, as he stepped forward, stretching his hand towards him Jace body.

This caught the zombie's attention, and they began to walk towards Grey. The zombies were approaching, but Jace was all he could see.

Jace body then began to convulse, as if telling Grey he couldn't do anything to save him.

Grey placed his hand on tightening chest. It hurt him to see Jace in this state.

Jace was the closest thing he had to a friend. They both started working on the same day. He wasn't put off by Grey's cold demeanor and spoke a lot even while he wasn't listening. Grey had found it annoying but also enjoyed the company. And now Jace was gone.

Grey blamed himself, if only he had just reached here earlier. If he had warned him earlier, if only he had found the axe earlier.

No.

Grey shook his head. Doing that wouldn't bring him back.

Jace corpse rose to his feet, a husk of his former self, no trace of soul was left.

His lifeless eyes fell on Grey, and he let out an animalistic growl.

Grey's chin trembled, his eyelids growing hot.

Jace was a zombie now.

The undead creatures were now dangerously close to him

“ Goodbye Jace.”

Grey said with a flat voice and turned away, the claw of a zombie barely missing the claw in his shoulder.

Grey felt a mix of fear, rage, and guilt. He ran into the zombies he hadn't killed earlier and rammed his body unto their which threw them to the ground.

He gripped his axe to finish them, but more of the zombies who began to pour out of the rest of the office in the floor.

He left them I ran to the stair, he couldn't die here.

Grey vision turned towards the glass wall to see if any human was alive. But there was none.

No one else made it.

He ran towards the edge of the wall as zombies kept pouring out. But one moved into Grey path.

Grey let out a guttural roar, feeling a sensation of increased strength and hurled the fire axe, which spun tearing into the air and crunched home.

The zombie fell to the ground with a lifeless thud.

Grey reached the zombie step on its face and pulled out the axe.

He ran towards the stairs, growls of frustration following him.

He then pulled open the door and hurriedly closed the door behind him.

Grey stepped away, watching the door closely.

Bang!

The zombies began to slam their bodies on the door. Ramming it continuously. As expected, they wouldn't know how to use doorknobs, even worse that it was a pull and not a push.

Grey panted exhausted. He was enraged and annoyed at his weakness. He wanted to kill all the zombies, but he just wasn't strong enough. Even worse, what happens after that. He was on the 7th floor and in other to escape the building he had to climb down.

He couldn't possibly kill each one of them.

Bang!

The door cracked.

And Grey jumped back, in startle. He had to leave. The door wouldn't hold.

Vruummmm!

The familiar vibratory sound rung in his head once again, the first time in the morning and the other before the apocalypse began.

This time, though, it hurt way more than the others.

Grey winced as he held his head ached in pain. He felt dizzy and stepped backwards, slipping down the stairs and falling.

His body stood tumbling down, he covered his head instinctively as his body slammed unto the hard concrete ground.

His body only stopped, when he reached the path that led to the 6th next floor.

Grey entire body throbbed in pain.

His head was still ringing, and he clutched it with both hands.

Soon it stopped and Grey felt eased. His body still hurt like crazy, and he was sure he had broken one or two ribs.

Grey knew he couldn't stay on the ground forever, as it was only a matter of time before the zombies broke the door and made their way down.

As he moved to pick himself up to stand, a cackle of electricity appeared on a wire just right beside him.

If Grey wasn't so stunned, he would've noticed it, but the pain blurred his senses

Standing on both feet, he staggered backwards still dazed and unknowingly stepped on the live wire.

Grzzzzz!

Jolts of electricity ran through him.

His body spasm as he let out a shaky pained grunt.

He fell sideways, but somehow he was still conscious enough to catch himself before he fell to the ground.

He landed on his knees, panting wildly as his chest felt like it was on fire. He placed his hand on it, and slowly it eased to a tickling feel. The shock heightened his senses and he sensed that a zombie was right behind.

Quickly, his hand found the fire axe, and he made a sharp turn, swinging his axe towards the zombie head.

Whoosh!

The axe glowed with a blueish energy and smoothly went through the zombie head, decapitating it.

The energy of the attack then fell off the axe edge and hit, causing a dent.

Grey eyes widened as he stared at the zombie head fall to the ground with a plot.

His axe had decapitated the zombie without any resistance. It was like cutting through butter.

He raised his axe to his eye-level as watched as electricity cackled around it. He could also feel a weird energy coursing through his veins. Almost like the tingling sensation he initially felt around his chest had spread to his entire body.

“What the hell is hap---”

[Ding!]

A mechanical voice interrupted before he could finish.

[Congratulations you have awakened the system.]

[You have killed a zombie.]

[Level Up!]
