Chapter 109
Ronan took the walk of shame, an elite on either side of him as he was paraded past the few students that hadn't turned in to their dorms for the night. He only recognised one face in his journey, Alestra, completely unsurprised by the sight as she gave him a small wave. He didn't know which emotion deserved the spotlight. Worry gnawed at how the entire situation could be painted into any picture the Council pleased, panic grabbed for the closest way out, and anger festered at the thing that had caused all of this. He hissed out a sigh as Cursimian twitched under the dalem cuffs that had been slapped on him. None of this would have happened if that ancient weapon had chosen someone else. He felt one of the elites nudge his back, obediently walking into an empty meeting room as the door locked behind him. The moment of solitude was his chance. He ripped up his sleeve and glared at Cursimian. "Don't you ever do that again." Stella perched on his shoulder. "He says you are a coward.
Chapter 109.2
"Ronan, may I be honest with you?" Ronan glanced at Stella, opting for the distraction from thinking of where he could possibly sleep. He rested his chin on his palms to brace for another comment on his intelligence. "If you're nice about it." "I wish to thank you and Cursimian." She perched on the table, trying to roll her body and mimic a bow of respect. "Your character is one I have not come by in my years with the Council. Many of us golems are destroyed for sport." Ronan frowned, his heart sinking at the words. She may have played his patience on a number of occasions, but Stella deserved some shred of respect by her peers. "I'm sorry to hear that." He rose a little as red caught his corner vision, the inked portrait of a ruby flumigan somehow giving him comfort. A flicker of familiarity. "So you really don't remember who you were before you died?" "I do not, but I have grown used to my circumstances. Why do you ask?" "Phantom is the same way. He doesn't remember who he was
Chapter 110
Veronica pouted on the windowsill. The cold glass pressed her nose as she stared past the shingling to two scuffed helmets traipsing about the grand courtyard. Adrian and Horus, padded to their toes and frantically swiping at eachother with wooden duds. She wheezed as the golden ribbon on her back was yanked into her ribs, one final knot making sure she definitely wouldn't be breathing at her birthday celebration. Adrian could get dressed in the time it took three maids to brush up Veronica's hair into a tugging mess. "Now, give us a twirl." Veronica sighed, sticking her arms out to twist as quick as she could on one foot and raise the frills to level with her arms. The maids oggling her performance gave a little clap, her mother's applause delayed by the weight of her never ending contemplations. "The green is quite lovely." She grabbed Veronica's arms, seeming to be just as curious as she was in how high she could lift them. "We can do more with the hair, something gold. What do
Chapter 111
Veronica sat in ponderment. She knew she had been cleansing her hands at the water enchantments for far too long, and likely looked as though she was admiring her reflection to anyone that entered the bathroom. It was fine, most nobles born to Latos would be tranced by simpler things. The green dress she had suffered herself into was definitely lighter on decorations, but it would still do the trick.Sonya's plan had a good foundation, and married well to some refining touches. The biggest obstacle to their success was now the sheer delicacy of timing it right. She pulled the liquid curse out of her pocket, making sure she was alone before carefully peeling off the label. Where Sonya had found such a potent spell was a question for another time, but if their target suddenly changed his story in court, the Council would reassess him for enchantments—and the plan would go up in smoke. There was a solution though. She slipped another vial from her pocket, different, but nearly the same s
Chapter 111.2
Ronan slapped his pillow in a vain attempt to make it softer. It was one of the stiff cushions from whatever lounge Lightwood had raided, but the blanket, oddly enough, looked to be from a dorm room.He had sprawled himself across the table like a ritual sacrifice to find some sleep—the wood grinding against his spine might as well have been a slab of stone. Between the lack of a mattress and eyeing the door whenever something creaked, he had barely gotten a wink of sleep.Instead of freedom, his homework had been delivered with breakfast. Mr. Greine had put on a habit of visiting hourly, and Ronan was eager for the response on his latest request. He bounced his leg as a distraction from the call of nature, blanket over his head as he sifted through the few pages of homework he had been gifted. He looked at the first question, texting into his phone and waiting."Are you snatching answers from classmates?" Stella chimed, perching on Puff's head as he snoozed in a little curled up ball
Chapter 111.3
Veronica forced a chuckle, resisting the urge to shake off the arm that looped her shoulder like a dead slug. Goldwater nobles truly were the worst company, the odd thorn out being Horus and his tastelessly perfect set of manners. It wasn't much of a surprise that Ronan had landed on the receiving end of a Louvre's backhanded tactics. Of all the noble houses of Goldwater, their relationship was the most frayed with Alta Staar. She was just thanking her lucky stars that beside her was one of many forgotten children bearing the title. The family's first born hadn't taken to private schooling."Really? I thought you two were friends?""Gods no, he follows me around everywhere I go like a lost puppy and calls it friendship." Her stomach flopped as he pulled her in closer, striking her with a concotion that couldn't tear itself between flowers and burning timber. She forced herself to lock gazes, returning his childish grin with a smile that hopefully didn't flaunt her desire to leave. "Yo
Chapter 112
Veronica giggled as the small orange puppy ran circles around her, jumping at her hands for attention and playfully biting her hands.Cinder was perched on her shoulder, cautiously watching the dog roll over for belly rubs while Vera happily complied."Patches, there you are!"Veronica and the puppy perked up. Where she returned Adrian's glare, Patches let out an excited yip, wagging his tail with excitement as he bounded into Adrian's open arms. From across the hallway, her brother narrowed his eyes, popping his chin like the prissy noblewoman that liked to lounge in the ballrooms."Stop taking Patches, Veronica. I'm trying to train him.""He wanted to play," Veronica argued, pushing up her nose as she got up and folded her arms. It was hard to believe Adrian was dumb enough to think something would exclusively love him, especially a puppy—but arguments were lost on him."Why'd daddy get you a puppy? You don't even play with him.""What are you complaining about, you have a phoenix.
Chapter 112.2
"Are you crazy, Veronica?!" Adrian belted."I want to see one! I don't want him to get hurt, maybe Cinder could help him!"Mr. Jackling crouched down, gently grabbing Veronica's hands to squeeze some confidence into her. "It would take many a Garaean to even scratch your father, Veronica."She didn't budge. That excuse had fallen out of a lot more than Mr. Jackling's mouth. "What if one gets lucky?""Your father is the luckiest man I have met, to have three beautiful children that worry so much about him.""I'm not beautiful," Adrian puffed, his lips tugged down at the girlish word. "You should know a proper compliment, servant.""He's right Adrian, you're the prettiest boy in all of Listillvice," Veronica cooed, grinning at the sharp glare her brother had. She never understood how he got away with his manners towards Mr. Jackling. All the other adults had him tripping over greetings.Mr. Jackling rested a palm on both their shoulders, paying Adrian a bow of respect he hadn't earned.
Chapter 113
Ronan didn't think he would be dibsing court chairs, but there he was, dropping into the same wooden seat with pin prick grooves on its arch from Puff's chewing habits. The dragon was asleep in his lap this time around, but that didn't stop Ronan from scratching at the wood himself .Mr. Skyfell had one-eightied from doom and gloom to composed and cold. He was confident about something he didn't care to share with Ronan. And to further contrast what Ronan expected to walk in on, none of the Council members looked particularly thrilled to be in the room.Ronan leaned in on Skyfell's ear. "Are you arguing mind control?"He evened the papers he was skimming, folding them up to quietly pack them back into his bag.Ronan felt his own neck craning to see if that same emblemed fabric was still in there, but there was nothing short of books and loose pages."You have some useful friends. Be grateful.""Okay, but that's not really an answer." Ronan quickly averted his gaze when Skyfell looked
Chapter 114
Ronan felt eyes upon him. Digging and clawing. Expecting.Expecting the correct answer to fill in the blank number five."Lotil Frills?"Truvius' face didn't budge. Dungeon master of the intermediate enchantment materials homework key. "You are..."Ronan double checked the paragraph. Mr. Truffle wasn't nice enough to copy lines right out of the books. But he had to be right on this one. Unless he was losing his ability to read too."Correct!"He pumped his fist with relief. There was no one like Truvius to give him a high off a right homework question."Twenty more to go.""And then onto the Camp Gorigol report."Ronan bounced his hands at that one. "Maybe. What side did you choose?"Truvius popped an eyebrow. The Garaean Empire had been footing his tuition since day one, and the look on his face screamed he wasn't risking all that on a small paper.Ronan continued the silent conversation with a shrug, Lumi sang a similar tune to Earth's in the strangest places. The world had been no
