CHAPTER 281
The next morning, Nathan rose early. The house was quiet and Vanessa stirred beside him but didn’t speak.Nathan leaned down, kissed her forehead, and left the room without a word, but he made sure to the staff to take good care of her and memes sure she took her supplement. By the time he arrived at the helipad, the Presidential helicopter was already waiting for him. Nathan chose three cabinet members, and they were already waiting for him at the base of the aircraft. Gareth was among them, he wished he wasn't thought. The other two ministers exchanged uneasy glances but said nothing. They knew better than to question Nathan’s decisions, especially not today. Without a word, Nathan gestured for them to board. Nathan settled into his seat and he folded his arms across his chest. His mind was already in Vorthax, calculating every possible move, every word he would need to say. The flight was silent, save for the occasional voice of the pilot over the intercom. They flew ou
CHAPTER 282
The elevator hummed softly as it ascended, Nathan stood at the center, his hands behind his back. His face was calm but his cabinet members, however, were far less composed. Gareth shifted uneasily, his gaze darting to the ornate golden panel of the elevator. The other two ministers stood stiffly, and they exchanged nervous glances. Nathan, however, remained unmoved. His eyes were fixed on the elevator doors. The elevator came to a stop with a soft chime, and the doors slid open to reveal the Apex Council Chamber. The room was very large, and the ceiling was very high.At the far end of the chamber stood a massive throne, with gold carvings. It was more than obvious that was the throne of Sebastian. Seated at a long, rectangular table in front of the throne were members of Sabastian’s cabinet. They were dressed in robes of the finest silk; they looked so rich and well f, ed, unlike the inhabitants outside the gates. Nathan walked into the room with his gaze sweeping over the cou
CHAPTER 283
Sabastian’s chuckle reverberated through the room. He leaned forward slightly, his massive hands resting on the armrests of his throne. And with a predatory gaze, he stared at Nathan. “Where,” his voice rumbled. “is my money?”The council members froze, their eyes darting to Nathan.Nathan leaned back slightly, with a calm expression.“I did not come with your money,” Nathan said. The murmurs from the council were louder this time.Even Nathan’s ministers flinched as they exchanged panicked looks. Gareth's face was almost drained of color as he gripped his seat. Sabastian’s hand tightened on the armrest. “Then why are you here?”Nathan’s expression remained unchanged. “I came with a peace offering,” he replied. His tone was calm but carried a weight that silenced even his trembling ministers. Sabastian tilted his head, the lion teeth on his necklace catching the light as they shifted with the movement. “A peace offering?” he repeated in a mocking tone. “From Prescott?” Nathan i
CHAPTER 284
“You want me,” Sabastian thundered, his voice booming through the chamber, “to partner with the same people who drove me and my mother from our home? The same people who spat on us and called us condemned?” His voice cracked with a raw, primal emotion, and for the first time, there was a glimpse of the pain behind his anger. He stepped down from his throne, each step echoing in the now-silent room, his predatory gaze never leaving Nathan.“My mother,” Sabastian growled, “was an innocent woman. She was banished from Prescott, she was called a traitor for crimes she did not commit. Do you know what we suffered, Nathan? Do you have any idea?” He took another step closer, his towering frame casting a long shadow over Nathan and his ministers. “No one would take us in,” he continued, his voice rising. “We were outcasts. Condemned by your father’s decree. We starved. We begged. We survived by sheer will alone because the world gave us nothing. And you think,” he snarled, his lip curlin
CHAPTER 285
Nathan’s calm demeanor began to waver as Sabastian’s taunts hung heavy in the air. His ministers exchanged frantic glances, silently pleading for restraint, but Nathan stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. His voice, though steady, carried a sharp edge of authority that sliced through the tension like a blade.“You listen to me, Sabastian,” Nathan said, his tone darker, sharper than before. “As long as I am President of Prescott, you will not get a single penny from us. Not one. Do you hear me?”The council members gasped at Nathan’s bold declaration. Sabastian’s lips curled into a very dangerous smile, his gaze like a predator sizing up prey. He had not had anyone challenge him in a while. He leaned forward slightly, his lion-tooth necklace swinging from his neck. He then let out a low, rumbling laugh that seemed to shake the very walls of the chamber.“You don’t know who you’re dealing with,” Sabastian said coldly before he stood to his full height, his imposing frame dwarfing ev
CHAPTER 286
The grand iron gates of the Apex Tower groaned as they swung open, the sound reverberating through the vast courtyard. The air outside was thick with the biting cold of Vorthax’s unforgiving weather. Nathan stepped forward first, and the ministers trailed nervously behind him.The path leading to the helicopter was lined with guards. The tension was palpable as the hardened guards gripped their weapons tighter.Behind Nathan, Gareth stumbled slightly, catching himself with a shaky hand on his colleague’s arm. “Are we truly walking out of here alive?” Gareth whispered, his voice barely audible over the wind. The helicopter came into view, the rotors were already spinning slowly, a low hum vibrating through the air as the pilot waited for his passengers. As they approached, one of Sabastian’s guards stepped closer to escort them the rest of the way.Reaching the helicopter, Nathan stopped and turned, his ministers halting behind him. He cast one last look at the Apex Tower. The golde
CHAPTER 287
The flight back to Prescott was silent except for the hum of the helicopter blades. Soon enough they were within the walls of Prescott. Nathan sat motionless in his seat while the ministers seated around him exchanged glances but dared not speak. They had seen a side of Nathan today that left them uneasy. As the helicopter descended onto the private helipad atop the Presidential Estate, Nathan finally looked outside the window. The helicopter landed end with a soft thud, and the engines powered down. Nathan rose from his chair and without and ne he exited the helicopter without saying anything. His ministers hesitated before following, the weight of the meeting still heavy on their shoulders. At the foot of the staircase leading to the estate’s main entrance, Vanessa was waiting. The soft glow of the estate’s lights caught the worry etched into her face. Her arms were folded across her chest, she had been waiting, as she always did when Nathan returned from a meeting
CHAPTER 287
The following morning, the sun rose over Prescott, and in the cabinet chamber, a murmur of voices filled the room as ministers gathered; their faces were pale, especially the ministers who went with Nathan to Vorthax. Gareth, who was still visibly shaken, stood in a small circle with two of the other ministers who had accompanied Nathan to Vorthax. His voice trembled slightly as he recounted the horrifying experience. “Sabastian is… unlike anyone I’ve ever encountered,” Gareth said, his hands gripping the edge of the table. “The man commands fear simply by existing. His presence is.... overwhelming, suffocating."He came up with any words he could use to describe it but it did not feel they were enough. And his threats… they weren’t empty at all.” Another minister nodded, his expression grim. “I could feel it too. He’s not just a tyrant; he’s a predator. Do you know he keeps the teeth of all the beast he has conquered with his bare hands around his neck?” A ripple of unease
CHAPTER 288
Nathan had just finished his speech, and a heavy silence filled the chamber. His words, like iron, had pressed down on the doubts lingering in the room. As the air began to shift from tension to determination, Nathan’s secretary, appeared at the chamber’s side entrance. She moved quickly but discreetly and she leaned close to Nathan, and she whispered into his ear, her voice was filled with urgency. “Mr. President, a package just arrived. It’s marked urgent and addressed to you personally,” she said, holding a small, sealed box in her hands. Nathan’s brow furrowed slightly, his instincts immediately pricked. He turned to face her fully, his expression unreadable. “Bring it to me,” he said, his voice even, though a subtle tension threaded through his tone. Lillian handed him the package, stepping back but remaining nearby, her professional demeanor masking her own unease. Nathan placed the box on the table before him. The ministers who were already on edge leaned forward slight
CHAPTER 289
Lillian nodded briskly, her face pale but her professionalism unshaken. She picked up the box and hurried out of the chamber. Nathan then turned to James who was now Prescott’s Head of Security and Intelligence. “James,” Nathan commanded. James immediately straightened, his sharp features reflecting the seriousness of the situation. “Mr. President,” he replied, his voice steady. “Find out who delivered that package,” Nathan said, each word laced with quiet fury. “I don’t care what it takes—pull every surveillance tape, interrogate every staff member if you have to. I want the person alive.” “Yes, sir,” James replied, already scribbling notes in his notebook. “We’ll comb through every detail. I’ll have a preliminary report on your desk within hours.” Nathan nodded, his expression unrelenting. “Good. And James, if it turns out that someone within Prescott betrayed us…” He let the sentence hang in the air. James eyes darkened with understanding. “Understood, sir.” Nathan
