Chapter 61
Perdony“Steven, you need to grow a pair and learn to live man!” Caden said as he sipped from his wine glass. His right arm draped around Brigit’s shoulders.Steven watched as the man’s hand drifted down and caressed her collarbone, slowly working his way down the neckline of her dress.“I came here because you said you wanted to talk business.” Steven said, trying to keep his gaze from lingering on that hand gently stroking the tall brunette. He held out a folder of papers he had been trying to show Caden for over a week. “These deals are time sensitive. Now is the chance to get in on them!”“Time sensitive? Word is your cousin already secured a deal with Harbinger for a whole new manufacturing plant. It sounds to me like there isn’t any room left for me.”Steven bristled with excitement as he launched into his prepared speech for probably the hundredth time this week.

Chapter 62
Perth, mid week.Sarah Harlow walked the construction site on the south side of town. Things were moving much faster than she would have thought possible. Normally in Perth it would take several months just to get permits to break ground. However, the crews hired by the Harbinger group were already well into the build of the new manufacturing plant.Foreman Josh Grayson strolled up to her and held out his hand in greeting.“Miss Harlow. Here to check on the progress?”“Yes. I am sorry. I really don’t mean to micromanage. Its just that this project is the biggest thing my family has taken on. It has to go right.”Grayson chuckled, “You are in good hands. I have been doing this for over twenty years, and my father for forty before that. Heck, half of Perdony has my family’s mark on it.”“So, why are you here in Perth? Seems a long way for such a skilled contractor.” Sarah asked

Ameranthian Forest – David TyrNathaniel strode up to David at the end of the fifth day of training. David could tell the week was wearing on even the Huntsmen, and everyone was ready for this cycle to be over.“I have more bad news.”“Speak.” David said simply.“I talked with the pilots from the base. They apparently didn’t see any need to report that they have only been out a few times.”David lifted an eyebrow, “And? We are down thirty men. If they come once a day, that would only be four to five times.”“They only picked up eight. They said most days was only two or three.”David’s eyes went wide, “What the hell? Where are the rest?”Nathaniel had out a rolled piece of damp paper. “This was in an arrow message tube. It was shot into my tent pole.”David scanned the missive, “The lady of the forest bids we leave

Dark shadows filled the woods as the transport helicopter lifted off with the thirty two remaining men. Of the sixty five that had come on this training mission, two were confirmed dead, eight had quit and made it to the evacuation transport throughout the week. The remaining 23 were unaccounted for.Twelve more huntsmen had flown in of the transport, bringing their total to twenty-four huntsmen. There were all sixteen of the full time members of the Huntsmen and eight new special forces members who were in their initial training to deal with fae. David looked through the crates they brought and pulled out night vision and thermal sight helmets and passed them around.“You get everything?” David asked one of the new arrivals.“I think so.” Huntsman Dravko answered.“You think or you know?” David snapped.“I got everything on the list. Sheesh. What’s gotten you in a twist, general?”
Chapter 65
The Huntsmen teams faded silently into the forest forming a loose net as they moved north and west, hoping to herd the Amdis towards the living barrier fence that separated the empire from the landlocked nation of Amaranthea at the heart of the empire’s territory. With luck, they could use the natural barrier to trap the Amdis and end it. If it escaped into the Ameranthian forest, well, five million square km of virgin forest would hide it some completely that there would be no hope of killing it.The nocturnal sounds of crickets and the occasional hooting of an owl filled the night as the Huntsmen made their way through the woods in search of the Amdis that had slain several of the recruits. As the moon reached its zenith, the radio in David’s ear crackled to life.“Contact. Team three. Heat signature two hundred meters. North, north east.”David grinned. Now is when these men would shine. Everyone knew their rolls and the

“A friendly just killed Trevor, so forgive us if we are a bit on edge,” Nathaniel replied.Wide eyes stares took in the scene and Dravko lowered his rifle before running his hand through his hair, “Damn, one of them snapped? What the hell happened?”David explained, “Hayden stumbled out of the woods. We figured he was the only survivor of his team. But then he just opened fire, killing Trevor before I took him down.”Motion on the edge of the small clearing caught David’s attention and he raised his rifle, causing a chain reaction as the rest of the huntsmen did the same. something darted away and David signaled to the men. Several charged after it while David, Nathaniel and Nyx hung back to be rear guard.“We will return for the bodies after this is dealt with,” David assured Nathaniel. “We need to finish this first.”Turning to Nyx, “Can you try to flank it or com

It was unnerving to have to face their own men without ever spotting the Amris they were hunting. Those who were bewitched seemed sluggish in their movements as if someone else had to order their every move. While this would make it easier to take them out, they were still huntsmen and David was loathe to harm his own men, even if they were now fighting against him. He could only imagine the terror and chaos such an attack would cause in a town or city if an Amris were to leave the forest.“Not bad,” came a haunting and melodic voice. The shadows moved and a lithe figure stepped forward. David shined his flashlight at the figure revealing a slim female figure. The being was nearly completely naked with gray skin. The Amris has made a sash of leaves that draped from one shoulder down to a belt of green vine. Had there been cloth beneath, it might have been fashionable, but as it was, the leaves did nothing to cover her figure. When her eyes gli

Nyx was laying on the ground, but he couldn’t tell from here if she still lived. One of the Amris had been dismembered completely by the wolves and several others were growling at the second.A flash of blonde drew is attention as a silver blade slashed through the second Amris, slicing it in half from shoulder to opposite hip. Blood sprayed as women stepped through the space the amris had just been. She was dressed in a strange green leather armor and a diadem of green leaves graced her blonde locks. She flicked the blood from her sliver blade and took two long strides towards the remaining Amris.“You killed my sisters,” The Amris mused. “You will pay dearly for that.”The woman didn’t dignify the Amris with a reply, instead engaging in a series of lightning fast slashes.David marveled at her restrained movement. Every step was perfectly placed to conserve as much movement as possible while always moving her i

The sun had set once more by the time the battlefield had been cleared and the wounded or dead transported back to Perth. David slumped into a high backed chair in one of the newly renovated conference rooms near the top of the Perth Center tower.“And to conclude, our final count is six dead, five seriously wounded. That specialist, Nyx, is still unaccounted for,” Nathaniel said formally. He stood at parade rest, one arm in a sling and several bandages showed along his neck and arms.“Six dead.” David let out a long breath. More than he had ever lost in a single engagement among his elite soldiers. Not only that, but it had been only three Amris that had caused such ruinous losses. In the many wars he had fought in and led men through, it was not uncommon to lose someone, but normally the loses were far heavier among the enemy. Losing double and damn close to quadruple just to kill three fae was unacceptable and a stain on his lead
Chapter 70
David worked out his frustrations by training with the men at the training ground every day. Those who had survived hell week were subjected to a ruinous treatment as David battled groups of ten per day. They were allowed to use any attack they wished, and employ any tactic they could think of to attack him. Any blow they managed to land would pay out a 1000 dret at the end of the day.Only Hensley and two others managed to collect by week’s end.The recruits didn’t know the details about the missing men from hell week, and they had not been made aware of the mission the Huntsmen undertook, but David made sure to spend time each afternoon drilling with Hensley. If what Tristan had told them was to be believed, she might be one of the few that could hold their own against an Amris if they ever had to face one again.David almost wished he had ordered her to join the huntsmen on that day. Perhaps she would have been able to work with Nyx
