Jill's POV I stared at the folder on my table, I had read it countless times now.Manuel was an accessory to murder, he was in a gang before this. Oh my God, the prosecution was going to have a field day with this.I crossed my arms.I texted Manuel to meet me at my office later today. I needed to see his reaction when I bluntly asked him about this. The court was in a few weeks, how was I doing to spin this when Manuel has a criminal past?In as much as Cassidy's husband has no alibi and other people wanted her dead; an ex-business associate threatened her in broad daylight. I needed to find a way to use that.“Sarah,” I calledShe rushed in, a cup of coffee in hand, my usual order.“Ugh, I needed this, you're a lifesaver” I praised her, it was like she knew right before I needed something when I needed it.“Please can you get me the head of homicide on the phone “ I instructed.“Of course ma’am, right away” I needed him to tell me how far with finding Cassidy's stalker and her ex

Manuel's POV I could see the shock on Jill's face when she heard me, her face paled. She took a step back, went to her fridge, and brought out a glass of wine. She poured herself a glass and finished it in one gulp.“I don't know what to say anymore,” she began.I just sat there, still and unmoving, covering my face with my hands, I just wanted to disappear into a hole.“What did you get from her? I'm assuming you got something relevant for your case,” she asked, her voice dead.“I… Well” I tried to talk, but the words wouldn't come out. Her eyes were squinted, her jaw clenched. I knew she was angry.I didn't know what to say, if I learned anything from today, it's that I'm responsible for everything that happens now, I need to take responsibility.Jill just sat there, staring into space, she couldn't even look at me. We sat there for a while in silence, Jill's hands folded on top of her chest and my hands stretched out on the table. She finally decided to say something.“If anyon

Daniel interview 2 weeks ago Daniel entered the police station slowly. The fluorescent lights buzzed softly, and the air conditioner hummed slowly. He was escorted by the police officers who picked him up from his house. One of them asked him to wait in an interrogation room and he did. He sat there, gazing blankly at the wall, as he played with the sleeves of his shirt. He was brought out of his thoughts as soon as the door opened. The Detective entered the room, he sat down opposite him. Detective Nathan sat hunched over the metal table between them, his fingers laced together and Daniel sat down slouched in his seat his fingers on his lap.He brought out a recorder and began to record their conversation The detective cleared his throat before he spoke.“My name is Detective Nathan, and I apologize for bringing you in on such short notice. I'm sorry for your loss, Mr Jones, we had to call you in for questioning, but we had to rule out…..”Daniel cut him off before he could fini

Present.Daniel lifted the glass of whiskey to his lips, he downed it all in one go.He thought of his night with Jeanine and tried to remember what happened, but nothing came to mind. Each time he closed his eyes, he could hear Jeanine's moans in his ears, it made him sick. After Jeanine had blackmailed him with their sex tape, he had decided to play it cool till he had something to hold over her, or better still, till he got rid of her.He found himself thinking of Cassidy most days, her in the kitchen, in the pool, around their house, or in their bed. He missed her presence. He missed his wife. After his police interview, Daniel couldn't leave the house, he stayed up cooked up in his man cave, filling the void in his soul with alcohol. He thought about what led to his marriage crumbling, it wasn't the fact she had a boy toy outside their marriage, he knew, he had no problem with that.It was the secrets he kept that destroyed his marriage, the secrets he thought he kept well, Cass

Jill’s POVThe trial was in a few days, and I had to be on my aid game, after Manuel’s confession about sleeping with Jeanine I had given up hope this case would go down easy.Ever since this case started I have been poked, pried, threatened, insulted, what else? And now I was being followed.I checked the rearview mirror again, trying to convince myself it was just stress and my overactive imagination, but it wasn’t.I switched lanes again, and the black sedan two cars behind me did the same. I noticed the car twenty minutes ago after I left the restaurant. Yes, it was a few cars behind but I knew it was following me. This wasn't my first rodeo.I had handled clients whose opposition wanted me dead, it always started with me being followed. But in this case, who would want me dead?Maybe it was just someone going the same way as me, maybe it’s a coincidence and I’m just being paranoid.I made an unexpected turn to confirm, and the car behind me followed. My stomach dropped, I was be

I rode up in the elevator and marched to my office. As I did, I replayed the entire conversation I had with Kai in my head to know if I missed anything or if there was a hidden message.Could I trust him? Do the police consider him a suspect? Has he been questioned? “Sarah, where are the files on Manuel’s case I asked for?” I asked, taking a seat at my desk.“It's right here ma'am,” she answered, handing me the folders. She stood there, waiting for something. I looked at her through my lashes before I asked her.“Is there a problem Sarah?”She cleared her throat,“Nothing ma’am, I was just wondering who it was you were talking to in the parking lot earlier.”“It’s no one important, just someone I thought would help the case, I was wrong.”“If that's all, you should get back to work.” she turns to leave but I call her back.“Trail is so close now I need you on high alert, you'll hold down the fort here when I'm not around and you'll be with me at court if I need you, I trust you can

Manuals POVI was at the police station again, I had been laying low for a while, keeping my head down. I did not want any drama with Jill, the police, or anyone else. Out of sight, out of mind. I spent most days indoors, praying to God I wasn't going to go down for this murder.I didn't have the energy to investigate this case anymore. I was exhausted. Despondent. So tired that when the police officers came to my house to look for me, I didn't ask questions, I just followed them. They took me to the police station, this time not in handcuffs. Just for questioning they said. They escorted me to a dimly lit integration room where I proceeded to wait for over an hour. They wanted to make me sweat and make me anxious, I knew the drill. Finally, the door creaked open.Detective Nathan walked through the door, a coffee in hand. He's alone this time. I don't know if that was a good or bad thing.I pretended not to notice his presence, I continued to pick at my fingers. He sat in front of

Jills POVI look at the piece of paper Kai gave me and look through the windshield of my car, to confirm the address. It's a high-rise building, not the luxury apartments you'd expect Cassidy to live in.If I had a secret apartment, I'd go to a play that no one would expect. Somewhere like here.I get out of my car and the first thing that greets me is an awful smell; of trash about months old, I scrunch my nose in disgust.I go into the building and lock my car twice. Going back to make sure it's locked. It's not exactly a safe neighborhood. I can't stay long.On entering the apartment, there is a man at what seems to be a reception. I walked up to him.“Excuse me, sir, how do I get up to apartment 36?”His gaze shifts from the newspaper in his hands to my face. Without sparing me a second glance, he tells me it's on the fourth floor.I make my way to the elevator and I hear him laugh.“Out of order princesses, the stairs are that way,” he says, pointing in the opposite direction.

As soon as I left the police station I got a message from Jeanine. I wasn't in the mood for her manipulative ways so I didn't reply. Since then, I have received almost five texts from her. Which was strange because Jeanine didn't double-text. The last one was quite alarming so I opened her message. It read “Manuel, I found something.I don’t know how to say this, but you’re not guilty—at least, not the way they think. I have proof. Real, solid proof that can change everything. But I can’t talk here. I think someone’s watching me.Meet me. Now. Before it’s too late.”With a burst of energy, I leaped out of bed and hurried to the bathroom to get ready. In a matter of minutes, I was ready and on my way to her apartment. I arrived just in time, she was receiving a delivery when I got there. As I looked her up and down, I saw that she was still in her sleepwear – silk shorts and a camisole. But my attention was drawn to the faint, discolored marks around her neck. She shifted uncomfort

Jills POV I took the box, the phone, the letter and went to my house. I hadn’t left the house ever since.I usually stayed home the day before any trial, that explains why my phone hasn’t been ringing since then. But why was I still on edge, every time I heard a noise, all the hairs on my body stood on their ends.I felt a sense of dread, could feel the impending danger, I was apprehensive.I sat in my study waiting for the phone to come back to life, I held the letter in my hands, still unopened. The box contained 8 million dollars, why did someone need so much cash, was it to pay someone off? Or maybe to run away?Did Cassidy try to run away? Was she killed before she was able to flee? How did Kai even know about this apartment? This case is so much deeper than I imagined. I thought it’d be a slam dunk, but I can’t even say who wanted her dead. This woman was something, or she knew something, something bad. That’s the only reason why someone would target an interior designer li
