“It was so perfect,” Andrew grinned, chewing noisily on his hamburger. “I walked up to him, told him I just wanted to say hi. He didn’t even suspect a thing. You’d better respect me, huh?” He glanced at Solomon, who sat in the back seat with Sadie’s head resting on his shoulder.Solomon didn’t answer. That rude bastard, Andrew thought. He had no idea how much someone else would’ve paid me for this job. What’s that saying again? Or is it a quote? You never know what you’re capable of until you’re in danger?“When are you going to call him?” Andrew asked. “I can give you some advice if you want. Like in those mafia movies—the best time to call is when her hands are tied. You make a video call and go—”He raised his hamburger like a gun.“‘Your money or her life,’” he said dramatically. Then, smirking, “If you weren’t so rude to me, I’d have taught you how to do it properly. But it seems you don’t want it.”“Have you called the

Andrew was already crying. “Please, let’s stop the car. We can beg them!”“Don’t. Ever. Stop the car!” Solomon roared.“I can’t die like this,” Andrew sobbed. “I’m still young. I’m not even fifty. I haven’t achieved—”His sentence ended with a sickening thud as his head slammed against the dashboard. He went limp instantly.“We’re running low on gas, sir!” the driver yelled, voice shaking.“You idiot!” Solomon snapped. “Find a lake or something— we’ll all die together if we must!”Behind them, the two black cars were closing in fast. One wrong move and they’d be cornered. Then—Another car appeared out of nowhere, blocking the road.Solomon’s car crashed straight into it.Silence.For a heartbeat, the world stood still. Then came the sound of footsteps — fast, firm, drawing closer. The doors were wrenched open, metal groaning in protest. Two men pulled Sadie out.Solomon was barely conscious now, his vision fading in and out. The driver was slumped over the wheel, and Andrew’s voice w

Charles was breathing hard, sweat dripping down his temple as he drove back to the restaurant where they were supposed to have their double date. His men had warned him moments ago — Sadie would wake in five minutes. The spray they’d used was mild, just enough to keep her under for fifteen minutes. That damn bastard. He parked the car and quickly switched on the AC, trying to calm his own pulse. He’d barely caught his breath when Sadie stirred beside him. Charles froze, eyes on her.She blinked groggily, her lashes fluttering as she took in his face. “What happened?” she murmured, voice thick with dizziness. She tried to sit up, scanning the car like she didn’t recognize it.“What happened? How?” Charles echoed, forcing a small, confused smile — trying hard to sound casual, to hide the chaos behind his heartbeat. He prayed she wouldn’t notice anything strange. He wasn’t ready to tell her a damn thing.“When did we get here?” she asked, turning to him. “Did I fall asleep?”“Obviously,”

She couldn’t shake it. She couldn’t say she didn’t suspect Charles. She made a mental note to have some of her men check the dashcam before they left.As if on cue, her phone rang. Hardin. She mouthed his name to Charles before answering.“Hardin,” she whispered.“Hey, ma’am,” came Thomas’s voice from inside, waving at Charles.“I’ll go first,” Charles murmured to her.She nodded. As soon as he slipped out of sight she spoke into the phone, low and fast. “Can you come over right now? I want you to help me replace the dashcam. Keep the old one with you — I’ll collect it later today.”“All right, ma’am. But what about the car key?”“One of the passenger-side doors isn’t locked. It’s designed that way,” she said. When the call ended, Hardin bit his lower lip. Damn. What was Charles up to now that had Hardin this suspicious? He moved around the car and soon got to the restaurant. He wasn’t surprised to see two of the other guys already waiting.“You here for the memory card?” one asked.“

Mr. Wyatt had his hands in his pockets as he pretended to watch the kids playing on the field. He’d come out for some sort of “community service.” You’ve got to get your name on the news for some good deed, right? And of course, he had to bring his wife. On screen, the average New Yorker would imagine the perfect married life — Mr. and Mrs. Wyatt, thirty years together, still “falling in love” with each other, growing stronger, blah blah. You’ve got to feed the masses the fairytale.“You need to talk to your daughter,” Mr. Wyatt said, his eyes still fixed on the children playing on the swing set he’d donated to the orphanage.“We talk almost every day,” Marie replied evenly.“You know what I’m talking about, Marie.” His tone tightened, voice low, controlled.“Maybe you should explain more. I didn’t study mind reading,” she said coolly.“That man she’s been hanging around with — I don’t want to see him near her again.”“Then talk to him.”“Marie?” Mr. Wyatt snapped.“Hello, good aftern

“When was the last time you heard from Damien? I haven’t seen him in about two weeks. I hope he’s not off causing trouble,” Mr. Wyatt said.Marie gave him a look of thin irritation. “What? I’m too busy to chase after some rebellious son who won’t listen to me.”“Leave Sadie alone. It’s time she lived her life,” he shot back.“As long as she’s my daughter, I know what’s best for her. Emotions and logic won’t get us anywhere. In this life, if you’re at the bottom of the ladder, you’ll constantly be trampled—”Marie stepped on his heel with her stiletto. He yelped and glared at her.“Even if you’re at the top of the ladder and you’re a piece of trash, people will still step on you,” she said coldly.Mr. Wyatt watched her walk away, horror and fury mixing on his face. Damn — what was he going to do about that reckless Charles?Marie’s stubbornness was a problem. She was the only one who could talk sense into Sadie. He pinche

Lauren opened the door the moment the bell rang.Hardin stood there, holding up a pizza box like it was a peace offering.“Pizza,” he said, smiling.“What do you want?” Her voice was clipped, defensive. She was trying hard not to show how much she’d missed him.“I thought we could have some.”“And why would we do that together, Hardin? We’re not dating.”He stepped inside before she could stop him. “Don’t tell me you’re still mad about the other time.”Lauren’s jaw tightened. “What do you want from me?!” The words came out sharper than she meant. She hated that her heart was racing. Hated that he still had this effect on her.“I told you I love you,” Hardin said quietly. “If you’d just say yes… if you’d just let us try—everything could be better.”“Get out,” she said weakly. “Before I call the cops.”He finally looked at her—really looked at her—and sighed. “I’m sorry. For the other day. I shouldn’t

“Just wanted to take that off,” he said with a small smile, standing up. “I think I should go. I snuck out on Sadie — she’s having some kind of double date.”“You’re leaving already?” she asked, panic flashing across her face.“Yeah,” Hardin said softly. “I don’t want to disturb you.”“Let’s go on a date then. Maybe I’ll… consider you. I normally wouldn’t do this, but I kind of feel sorry for you.”“Don’t feel sorry for me, babe,” Hardin replied with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “If you want to date me, say it. But don’t pity me.”“I mean—how would you feel if I just rejected you flat out?” she pushed, desperate now, trying to make him stay.“I love you, Lauren,” he said gently, “but I’m not a puppy. We shouldn’t go on a date because you feel sorry for me. That’s not love.”Before she could answer, Hardin knelt and kissed her feet. Then he rose, smiled faintly, and walked toward the door.“Hardin!” s

Thomas shot Charles a glare. “You don’t get it, do you? I’m going to be a father. My kid is going to call me Daddy. I’ll tuck him in bed at night—” “Wait.” Charles raised a brow. “Him? Don’t you think you’re running faster than your shadow?” “I want a boy.” “Why would you want a boy?” “Why won’t I want a boy?” Thomas fired back. “Do you know how scary it is to raise a girl? I’d have to set curfews, monitor her every move, make sure she doesn’t talk to bad guys like you—and what am I even saying? I have to make sure she doesn’t even know you, because you’re too twisted.” Charles smirked. “Nice compliment, huh?” “I’m serious. A boy first. Then later—if I survive the first one—maybe a girl. She’d have an older brother to protect her when I’m not around.” Charles tilted his head, suppressing a grin. “Why am I getting the feeling Avery’s going to have twin girls?” “Shut

6:30 a.m.Charles was already up, dressed, and running a comb through his hair, trying to tame the stubborn strands. He could really use a trim this weekend. The door to his room creaked open. He turned just in time to see Sadie walk in, still in her pajamas, eyes half-open with sleep. He had no idea when she’d gone to bed last night—it had to be late. He’d left her in the sitting room around 1 a.m., still trying to make sense of Damien’s meltdown at the gate.“You’re going like that?” she yawned, already heading for his wardrobe.“You looking for something?” Charles asked, brow raised.“I honestly can’t tell if you’ve never been to places like this before,” she muttered, flipping through his clothes, “or if you’re just trying to pull my legs.”After a moment, she pulled out one of his most expensive suits, studied it, then looked back at him—then at the suit again—and finally nodded.“Wear this.” She dropped the suit on the bed like an order, not a suggestion.“Why should I? I’m fine
