Chapter 212
"But something happened, didn't it?" Costa noted, his eyes intensely fixed on Jenny.Jenny's lips moved but produced no sound. Nathan frowned at this. He did not like the methods Costa was using to extract information. He did not trust the man, as after all his goals were still unclear, and he had them right in his palm at this point. Still, he was not the type to keep shut when he was confronted by something he did not like."Don't treat her like that," he blurted out. "What did you say?" Costa asked. His voice sounded like hell. "She isn't well, can't you see?" Nathan said. "She is sick. You're only making her feel worse. She doesn't know anything, as she said.""Okay, okay." Costa raised his palms; a charismatic smile stained his face. "I am the bad guy for wanting to help. Well, of course I am, but she knows something.""And how do you know?" Nathan asked. There was no lack of curiosity in his voice. "You haven't given us any reason to trust in anything you say. If you have ac

"Come join me," Costa said, raising a glass to the trio. "I am good," Nathan said, noting that Cost was either drunk or he was trying to portray himself as drunk."Don't worry," Jackson said, one hand raised. "I am okay just sitting here and not drinking," replied Jenny."I see...well, that's no fun," Costa judged. "We did not come here for fun," Nathan retorted harshly. "We came here for information. And somehow we've not gotten anything from you. And now you want to have a drunken toast?""You came here because I threatened you there, smart ass," Costa said. Now it was most obvious he was nearly carried away by the alcohol. "Did you always know about the Lobbes neighborhood? Did you know your friend went there the same day that happened?"Nathan was quiet. Jenny was shaken quite obviously. Costa put his hand in his suit, drew out a gun, and pointed it at her. "And you, you better start talking before my finger slips and your brains become splurged right behind you. Of course you
Chapter 214
It was now pitch darkness outside of the room. Isaiah had gained more control over his body and had begun walking. He was staring outside of the window, thinking about the Gambinos and the chances that they would find him here. Behind him, Luke sat, hands inspecting his neck to see if it was now better healed. Kate just stood beside them like a statue, as she always did. Elena was nowhere to be found there."What do you think is going to happen?" Luke asked. Isaiah did not turn around. "I don't know," he said. "I never thought that this was going to happen. If someone had told me that you would be with me in the same room as Elena and Kate one day, I wouldn't have believed it. My head is short of plans."Luke sighed. "So you're saying that there is nothing we could do. Nothing you could fix?""I am even trying to conclude if whether or not it demands fixing," Isaiah said, this time spinning around to look at his friend's face squarely.Luke swallowed, and a sudden dullness encroached
Chapter 215
After a brief moment of silence, Jackson finally spoke. Although he guessed it was too late by then. "Yeah..." he chuckled, one hand at the back of his head. "There's nobody else here. You know...just me and Jenny..." He laughed nervously.Nathan gave himself a facepalm. "That idiot," he muttered through gritted teeth afterwards. They waited for Isaiah to reply, each of them hoping that he had swallowed the lie hook, line, and sinker."Okay, sure..." Isaiah replied monotonously. Everybody else around the table breathed together in relief, even though the guilt still lingered in the hearts of Jenny and Jackson. "Hey Jenny!" He called out unexpectedly. Jenny froze up. She wanted to speak to him, but she was not in any state of mind to do so immediately. Her heart raced speedily. She fumbled around for what to say. "Hey, Isaiah," she said. "Where have you been?""I'm sorry for everything," Isaiah replied. "But I promise that I will make it up to you immediately, you hear? I will tell
Chapter 216
"That should buy us enough time," Isaiah said as he dropped the phone. His face was saddened in the dim light. "What's wrong?" Luke asked. "They were lying to me.""I think I could tell about that...""They were definitely with someone else there. And my guess is that someone was none other than Nathan. It's why I couldn't tell them where we were. And I don't really feel bad for it since I was already lying to them. I couldn't help it."It was obvious to Luke that Isaiah was suffering for the decision he made, so he set out to quell the tension between his shoulders by saying, "It's not your fault, man. We all do certain things to help us get through certain circumstances. I understand."Isaiah would have been surprised by Luke's words if he had heard them from him more than two days ago. Now he had nothing to say about it. He was not shocked. The boy had seen what really went down in Isaiah's life when he was not at school or at the boy dorms. And there were a lot of reasons to jus
Chapter 217
In the kitchen, Elena scurried over plates and pans. Ingredients for food were laid on several pieces of kitchen equipment and looked more like they were laboratory apparatus rather than real kitchen equipment. The flame of the gas stove danced around like a yellow ghost as Elena held over it a pan filled with scrambled eggs. She had an odd smile on her face. One that her servant, Kate, found a little bit disturbing."My lady," she began, careful as a man moving past a field of land mines. "Yes, Kate," Elena replied, still smiling. There was a shadow over her face and eyes that betrayed some sort of worry. "Speak.""Are you okay?" Kate asked."Of course I am okay," she said. Smoke twirled into her nose, and she came away coughing and sneezing. After doing that for close to a minute, she rearranged herself, combing through her bouncy curly hair with her fingers and golden acrylic nails. "I am perfectly okay. It may be that I have become rusty from not being able to cook for quite a l
Chapter 218
"How does it taste?" Elena asked. Her hands were cupped within one another, with her cheek resting on them. In her eyes was a glee Isaiah was disturbed by. He tried not to look at it."I am not going to lie; it actually tastes good for a woman as evil as you," Luke said before Isaiah could respond. He beat him to it. But now Isaiah could not lie about the food tasting bad. They would know he was just pretending, to spite Elena. And from the look of things, the way he was eating the food given with haste, it would be so obvious."Well, I can't lie. It tastes really good," he managed to say, despite everything that was going through his mind at the time.Elena smiled. "Are you happy now?" He asked her afterwards. "Is your plan now a total success, or are we going to continue acting like you did not have a plan before you cooked this food?""Dude, what are you talking about?" Luke asked. "I know what I am saying, Luke," Isaiah continued. There was no doubt a spark of rage in his voice.
Chapter 219
There was silence in the car. Nothing but the sound of Nathan's stereo playing old-school songs. The blond boy was still bopping his head up and down when he asked, noticing how alienated that seemed to be to the passengers he was carrying, "What? Don't you people like old-school songs? They are gold. Far better than any slop people of our generation sing these days."Jenny sighed at this. Of course it was obvious that was not the reason everyone was quiet. Nathan was just, for some odd reason, playing ignorant, and this caused her more annoyance at him. Jackson, on the other hand, wasn't speaking to her. He felt betrayed by Isaiah and, Jenny thought, even by her in a sense. Since he really did not know when the relationship between her and Isaiah began. And to add to the headache that was surging up in her head, she did not really have a house anymore that she could just go to. She did not like the girl's dorms. She had just rented a little apartment from which she would be starting
Chapter 220
"A club?" Jackson asked. He could feel the anxiousness grow in his chest as his heart beat accelerated against his rib cage. "Yes, won't you like that?" Nathan asked. There was an obnoxious smile drawn across his face. "Oh, why do I bother asking you? Of course you will come."The poor glasses-wearing Jackson had never been to a club before. Neither had he gotten drunk. He had seen people do so. On television and in reality. He wondered what the experience would be like. But like all other experiences, he had merely only gotten an intellectual curiosity of them. Until now, his heart had never been tugged and pulled nearly out of his chest for it."Will there be girls?" He asked sheepishly. "Well, yes..." Nathan eyed him quizically. "Although I would rather not have girls around and we could just have fun only by ourselves. But if you in—""I want girls to be there," Jackson said swiftly, despite himself. "Oh." Nathan was shocked by the sudden outburst, his mouth slightly ajar. He l
Chapter 221
"Waiter," Nathan called out to an almost comedically dressed man with a huge bow tie knotted to his neck. He had a golden tray tucked under his arm.Jackson narrowed his eyes at the blond. "What do you want from me?" He asked. His voice rang with all the seriousness that could be mustered in a place as lively as that, enough to stab a feeling of dread in Nathan. Or so Jackson thought."Hmph," Nathan snorted as a waiter placed some drinks on the table, obscuring their views of each other. "Why do you think I would want anything from you?""What is going on?" Jackson asked. "I am serious, Nathan. I am not in the mood for any tricks and games. You and I know that we both are not friends. Why did you bring me here? Why are you doing any of this?""We both are not friends," Nathan said, pouring a drink into a glass cup. When he was done, he lifted the glass to his face and peeked through the transparent body. "But what if that is why I am doing this? Why do people want other people to be
