CHAPTER 51: A COURTESY OF TEETH
"If Captain Heinrich Konrad von Eichendorf expects me to say to him in person that he has to attend a parliamentary hearing right to his face, aboard that fancy expensive galley of his, very well." Raphael Laurent says. "I shall fucking take the risk." He turns from the window, and his eyes lock with the man known only as The Sinner. "But I won't do it unarmed and unprotected." A slow & predatory grin spreads across Raphael's lips. "Spread the fucking word in those pubs corsairs frequent when off duty." His voice drops to something more intimate & conspiratorial. "And make sure it spreads to teahouses and coffee houses owned by Captain Heinrich Konrad von Eichendorf as well, and even those few high-end brothels under his name in the Free City-States of the East." The Sinner's eyes gleam with understanding. "It will be done as you command, Your Highness." His voice is soft as a whisper & barely audible. He gracefully stands up, and bows an elegant and respectful bow i
CHAPTER 52: SILENCE BEFORE THE SAILS
"My terms are fucking simple and straightforward, my lord." Raphael Laurent says. He settles into the luxurious chair before Captain Heinrich's desk, his posture is relaxed but his eyes are sharp & misses nothing. "Your House is one of those minor noble Houses in the past without even a small sliver of dragon blood, yes?" He leans forward. "You will get a marriage offer for any girl in House Seafyre or even House Dragonfyre that catches your attention. After such a marriage, you will be automatically considered as an important part of that House." He pauses. "And your men can continue on being corsairs as they wish, or they have the option to join the Thalorian Royal Fleet as instructors to teach your unconventional methods to the Royal Fleet." His grin widens. "You are welcome to operate your goddamn businesses all over Thaloria Kingdom if you want, with 30% off on business taxes. You will also get an absolute pardon for the crimes of piracy and qualified theft of goods p
CHAPTER 53: A COIN’S WORTH OF BLOOD
The corsair galleys from neighboring isles open fire on the docked galleys owned by the Eichendorf Corsairs. The first volley of fire arrows arcs through the sky like a rain of falling stars, their tips burning with orange and crimson flames that leave trails of smoke in their wake. But the attackers are uncoordinated and clumsy at best, with next to zero communication efficiency between the captains that lead swarms of massive galleys that far outnumber the defending galleys owned by the Eichendorf Corsairs. Each captain fights for themselves, their signals conflict, and their formations are chaotic. The shrill shouting of hoarse voices thick with alcohol pierces the air like a cacophony of orders and counter-orders that accomplishes nothing. Rude gestures are flashed openly amidst decks, vulgar and defiant. The rancid and spoiled smell of cheap rum clings to discolored makeshift sailing clothes, a stench that carries across the water like a foul tide. The crew members of ot
CHAPTER 54: A LETTER FROM THE SHADOWS
The sellsails open fire upon the ports of the isles controlled by the Eichendorf Corsairs in a synchronized and efficient formation at close range. The ships move as one. Their oars dip and rise in perfect unison, and their sails billow with the force of coordinated wind magic. Catapults, trebuchets, and crossbows enchanted with fire runes, modified for devastating short-range attacks, begin to rain down on the defenders. The projectiles arc through the air like a storm of falling stars. Flaming bolts strike the docks, the warehouses, & the defensive walls. The air fills with the acrid stench of smoke and burning wood. But not for long. The dragons and wyverns of House Seafyre and House Dragonfyre that circle among the isles immediately let loose with hot and intense blasts of fire from their jaws. The flames are white-hot at their core, tinged with blue and orange at the edges , and carry the intensity of a forge's heart. They strike the sellsail galleys with devastat
CHAPTER 55: WHAT THE TRIARCHY GIVES
Raphael Laurent rips open the seal of the letter placed right in front of his desk. The parchment is smooth and creamy, its edges are sharp, its script is elegant and mocking. The letter reads in a mocking and elegant tone: "Third Prince Cain Vailtair Thaloria, You may have defeated the sellsail fleet and beaten back the corsairs paid to crush your new ally, Captain Heinrich Konrad Von Eichendorf. But the war is far from over. We're giving you exactly what you wanted. Until then, enjoy our creative methods in sowing strife and chaos in Thaloria Kingdom. Best Regards, The Triarchy" Raphael's arms tremble slightly with anger, and his fingers grip the parchment so tightly that his knuckles turn white. He immediately expects worst-case scenarios as he rushes out of his private solar tower inside Thaloria Royal Castle. He bursts through the doors of the throne room where King Alexander Cain Thaloria and the rest of the Thalorian Ministerial Council are in session. "Father, my l
CHAPTER 56: THE SONG OF THE DEEP
The fisherman's fingers curl around the brass bugle. His lips part to sound the warning that will send every soul on this shore running for their lives. He never gets the chance. A wall of steel-shod hulls rises from the morning mist. The ships emerge from the fog with silent menace. Their dark silhouettes cut through the gray veil with predatory grace. The water churns beneath their keels, and white foam trails behind them. Eighty-five attack clippers flying the silver storm sigil of House Storm slide into formation behind the marauding galleys, cutting off their escape before the first horn can blow. Storm mages raise their hands in unison. Their movements are synchronized. Blue-white runes blaze across the sky like angry stars & cast the ships below in stark shadows. The air thickens as the temperature plummets. A bitter chill descends upon the bay, & turns breath to mist and frost on metal. The mages' voices rise in a guttural chant that vibrates through the
CHAPTER 57: REAP WHAT THEY SOW
Adelaide Brunhilde von Sturmwellen's fingers dance across her harp strings. The temperature drops, and the shadows seem to deepen, & coil around the corners of the room. Raphael Laurent watches her with the hotheaded calculation of a predator sizing up a rival. Adelaide leans forward. Her revealing clothes do little to conceal the lethal grace and sensuality beneath. Her eyes lock onto Raphael's with the intensity of a blade finding its mark. "We want you to extract a certain conductor's baton currently in the hands of the Triarchy." Her voice drops to a whisper that cuts through the silence. Raphael's lips curl into a mocking smile. The laugh that escapes him is sharp, jagged, and utterly devoid of warmth. "You want me to steal a fucking baton." "Now, now, don't laugh, my dear little princeling, for that is no ordinary baton." Adelaide's smile never wavers. She plucks a single chord, a discordant note that makes the glasses on Gideon's desk rattle. A hairline c
CHAPTER 58: A LETHAL OVERDOSE
The copycat bazaars and merchant stalls in Valkhor, Eisanmark, and Silbermund City attract a fairly large number of curious customers early in the morning, when the residents of the Triarchy are just starting to get up and about to buy daily needed supplies. The morning air is crisp and cool as shoppers wander through the market squares with their woven baskets and leather coin pouches. They purchase products with cheerful abandon, totally unaware that what they buy are nothing more than shamelessly effective rip-offs of the original thing. The silk feels the same, the spices smell the same, the metalwork gleams with the same luster. The customers leave satisfied, with their purses lighter but their spirits are high, never suspecting the economic warfare being waged around them. When city trade inspectors and the City Watch sniff around to check for product safety and follow city rules, all the merchants in those copycat bazaars have to do is present them with forged official d
CHAPTER 59: THE PORT’S LAMENT
"Are you so dim-witted that you haven't figured everything out yet, Father?" Lady Dorothea Bell Hamilton's voice cuts through the private solar. "I'm taking over your position as the Lady Governor of Hamilton Province." She takes a step closer. Her eyes flash with the fire of something dangerous for a fraction of a few seconds. "You busy yourself with looking like a fool in riding clothes and overly ornamental weapons while hunting oversized wild pigs with tusks, while the riversides burn." Her voice rises. "And now you have the gall to feast these equally useless lickspittles of yours, while sleeper agents and spies of the Triarchy embed themselves in Hamilton Province like parasites." More magical leafy daggers materialize out of thin air, embedding themselves deeply in the walls between the bodies of lords and ladies alike that constitute Lord Governor Leopold's bannermen in theory. The daggers quiver with the force of their impact, and their edges gleam with the fain
CHAPTER 60: THE INDUSTRIAL PRINCE
"I will escalate even further, my lords." Lord Mayor Siegfried Reinhardt Valkhor's voice cuts through the tense silence of the breakfast chamber. "As for that sudden attack on Valkhor City, it is a most unfortunate event." He stabs a piece of expensive roasted tuna with his fork, and the tines pierce the flaky flesh with practiced precision. The fish glistens with butter and herbs, as steam rises from its surface. "But I don't see the need to worry, for there is no lack of manpower when I have the money." He laughs a mocking laugh as he raises the fish to his mouth. "Sellswords and residents from other city-states, or perhaps even countries, will flock to me when I dangle the coin right in front of their faces. As for repairs on the damage caused by the crew of House Saltfang, it is already underway as we speak." Lord Mayor Oswald Roderick von Eisanmark's face reddens with barely suppressed rage. He slams his ale tankard against the table, and the heavy ceramic cracks ag
