Chapter 11
Lectures hadn’t begun today. William just sat there, somewhere close to the window as he bit into his milky cake. Some students where up and about, other were seated and were chatting away. Noise filled the room with intermittent pauses and stares each time a person walked through the door. At the moment, all William could think about was about was not the reward he earned last night from the task he completed. Not entirely, no. “What really is the idea behind auctions? A gathering for the elite to show off their money to others for overpriced items they really don’t need?” He thought to himself as he jeered through the window into the school’s green fields. He wasn’t quite right, auctions are events held to determine how much people are willing to pay for an item such as a jewelry, this helps determine the market price, it could pass as a means to make unique and rare items accessible.Just then, one of the few people who William talked to in class sat beside him noisily as he shove

William had no more lectures for the day so he packed his bag, walked briskly through the hallway full of students, rubbing shoulders and making his way through to the door. It was sunny outside. He fixed his eyes on the spot he hard parked earlier. The countenance on his face changed. His car wasn’t there anymore. It had been towed because he parked right in the fire lane. “Oh God, not todaaay!” He exclaimed as he looked across the road as though he expected to see his McLaren miraculously sitting somewhere close. Visibly distraught, he paced about for a bit, rubbing his chin with his index finger and thumb and thinking, he needed to get home as soon as possible. At that moment, vehicles were leaving through the gate and incidentally Carmen’s was one of them, she was seated behind and her window was wound down halfway. She looked his direction slightly as her vehicle left the school, he paused and wasn’t sure if to wave. He reluctantly raised his hand to wave anyway and just then h

Close to dusk, William was seated in a small, fancy French restaurant. It had a peaceful ambience and colourful furniture. There was a large glass instead of a wall, it let the entire place be illuminated by the sun. William sat away from the window and had a bowl of soup in front of him. Vapour and sweet scent emanated from within. He was seated alone. There was a couple seated in the table across, and a few older people in other tables. With a spoon, William took the first sip of his soup. It was spicy-just how he liked it. He looked up from his bowl and noticed everyone in the room had stopped whatever thing they were doing, the room went obnoxiously silent. They were all looking at him with this emptiness in their expression. He cringed at the sight as he looked around and decided to continue with his meal. In swift reflex, he pulled away from the table. His spoon broke the silence disturbingly as it dropped on the floor. His breath wasn’t starting to grow rapid. His bowl of soup

“What in the world?” William muttered to himself still focusing his sight on the woman. Carmen turned to William,”Do you know that woman by any chance?”“I-I swear, I don’t,”he responded looking at Carmen briefly and looking back at the woman. “Listen, you need to calm down, okay? William,” Carmen assured. Suddenly, the screen appeared before William again for the first time today. “Task 008. Silver level. Walk up to that woman and grab her arm. Reward: $500,000 +2 confidence points,” the cyber voice instructed. William was burdened with the uncertainty of the screen being visible to him alone at that point. His heart pounded and his pulse raced because the voice had never spoken to him while he was in a social situation. He wondered how to handle it without looking like a psycho. “Since this cyber freak is inside of me, can he read my thought?” William wondered in deep thinking. “Go away, cyber, this is not the time, I’m about to have a date!” William thought. He hoped the cy

Carmen walked up to William who was still overwhelmed, ”are you okay?” She asked holding his shoulder. He turned slowly, “Y-yeah, I’m…fine.”“What on earth just happened?” Carmen asked not sure whether to expect an answer. “Why did you approach the woman? She’s obviously sick, she could have gotten herself killed!” “I honestly didn’t know, I was just-“ William said rubbing his eyes. Some onlookers interviewed the middle aged man as he sat on the floor carrying his wife. Some others cheered him on. He confirmed that his wife was psychic for 8 years and was also a soothsayer before she became ill and developed schizophrenia. “Great! I decide to go on my first natural date and it’s going this way,” Carmen said concerned. “I’m sorry, Carmen, I-I want to make it up to you,” go with me to this place. Carmen was unhappy at the point but decided to give it a go again. The train doors opened as people began to flock in. William let Carmen go in first then he stepped a foot onto the tr

“So, umm, what’s your favourite thing about Greece?” William asked breaking the silence. Carmen raised her head, brushed through her hair with her fingers. “Well, I can’t say for sure but I find their architecture intriguing,” she responded, “and oh, their mythology and history, totally awesome!” She added enthusiastically. “Totally. I particularly like their ancient designs and for mythology, I think I’m all in for Artemis and Hela,” William said. “Ooo, the ladies, huh?” Carmen said winking. “Yeah, the ladies,” he said chuckling. “Wanna know something interesting about Artemis?” He asked. “Spill,” she replied leaning forward. “Well, I read somewhere that Artemis being the god of the moon had people who worshipped her and they would bring cakes with little candles on them to honour her. That explains why cakes depict the roundness of the moon while the candles represented the glowing of the cake,” He explained. “Ohh, wow, I see now…” she said with a nod and an impressed look.

It was 4pm. William got home that day and lay down on the sofa in the living room. It was so comfortable and warm. It was like he had longed so much to be back home. He kept thinking about the amazing moments he had during his date. Then came the subway scene intruding his mind like a sinister flood. Flushing away the pleasant thoughts violently. He couldn’t help but wonder who the thin woman was, why she kept looking at him and why she dashed into the train tracks- especially. He felt uneasy. He needed answers. “Maybe I should ask the cyber voice,” he thought. He cleared his throat. “Hey…hey, cyber! I know you’re in there somewhere,” he said as he sat up and flexed his knee on the sofa waiting for the screen to appear. There was no response. “Come on, answer me! I have questions you need to answer concerning some strange things in my life. I need answers! ” he demanded. There was still no reply. He glared around the room as if looking for something. “Darn it!” He said as he s

It was a new day. William had lectures at noon. He had woken up hours ago and completed his morning routine. He was a stickler for waking up early, exercising and eating a healthy meal and reading 5 pages of a book before the days begins. Even though he didn’t maintain 100% consistency with this routine, he managed to gain a decent body build- around average. Even though his house wasn’t so far from school, he needed to get a new vehicle. He couldn’t go around in his bike, not anymore. He dressed up and walked out of the house. He locked the door and put the keys in his jacket. He observed the scar tissue on his wrist from the beating he got from Devon the other night. It was almost completely healed. He walked down the stairs and. Some neighbors in the nearby yard waved at him and he nodded in acknowledgement. He got to the road and flagged a taxi. “Wheel n’ Deals,” he said opening the back door of the taxi. “You got it,” the driver replied looking back at him and waiting for him

Chapter 19: An Unexpected Deposit
Sunlight filtered through the thin curtains of William’s apartment, brushing against his face like an uninvited reminder that another day had begun. He groaned softly, shifting under the thin blanket. His body still ached from yesterday’s mission — that ridiculous challenge that somehow ended with him walking out of the store a millionaire. He reached for his phone on the nightstand, squinting at the bright screen. Then his thumb froze. $500,000.00 CREDIT ALERT For a few seconds, he couldn’t breathe. His heart kicked hard against his ribs, the reality almost too absurd to grasp. He opened the banking app again, thinking it was a glitch. The balance was real. Five hundred thousand dollars — sitting there, waiting for him. A faint chime echoed in the air. His surroundings dimmed for a moment before a familiar blue text shimmered before his eyes. > [Task Complete.] [Reward: $500,000.] [Level Up: Bronze II.] [New Mission Loading…] He sat upright, hair tousled, pulse racin
