Chapter 31
Cole found his way into the second hospital that day. It was just 5:30 pm, enough time for him to do whatever he needed before meeting with Scarface and the other members of the gang tonight. He looked around the hospital to be sure no one would recognize him at the reception. That’d be rare, though, because of the tight jeans and jacket he was wearing, the rings all over his fingers, and the cap on his head—enough for no one to think he was the one. He wouldn’t have dressed like this three years ago. One, because he had no money, and second, because a house husband had no reason to wear anything fancy. He walked up to the receptionist’s desk. He could have asked the Scarface man to get him the best doctor around or anyone who could get the drugs his mother would need, but he didn’t want more people knowing about her health.Even his sister still didn’t know.“Is the doctor around?” He slapped a fake card with a fake name that belonged to the hospital on the table. The receptionist lo

“I guess for the security of the patients. Cameras are everywhere.”Cole got on the water closet and twisted the camera. Seeing that it had already disconnected, he grabbed the bag Edward was holding. The man watched, mouth parted.“What are you planning to do, sir?” Edward asked as Cole checked the files inside the suitcase.Cole didn’t answer.“If you’re thinking of a method, sir, I think you might want to consider distracting the men at the front of the door. I have some of my security men outside; they could fake an emergency at the ICU.”Cole glanced at Edward. “You’ve watched too many American movies,” he muttered before turning back to his task.He soon took off his jacket.“Give me that,” he said, reaching for Edward’s coat.Edward quickly took it off. “Please, sir, what are you planning to do?”“Think. About. It.” Cole wore the coat. “Your glasses.”“I feel like my idea is a bit good, really. A lot of patients are at the ICU, and if we do that…” Edward stopped to think. “I do

Catherine walked into the hospital, almost collapsing. She had just lost a five-million-dollar profit she was supposed to make from the school project—all because of that stupid, crazy Cole who had appeared out of nowhere. Her mind insisted that Cole had scammed the school. She knew it for sure, and the feeling was so strong that it gave her a headache. Afraid her blood pressure was climbing past the normal range her doctor had warned her about, she increased her pace.As soon as she could treat herself, she’d gather all the evidence and mail it to that glutton principal, so he could see for himself that Cole wasn’t someone who could pay for his meals, let alone a…“Oh, stress…” she tapped her head, trying to stop her spiraling thoughts. She walked toward the consultant’s office. People were running up and down the hospital, as usual. Poor man, she thought of her husband, the chief consultant—he must be having a hard time.At the front of the hospital, she noticed a lot of people. Her

By now, Beck stepped in. “Madam, just because some men went to prison doesn’t mean he’s some bad—”“Tell me what is good about assaulting women if you are not a rotten man yourself.”“I want a divorce. Right now,” her husband called. “I can't continue staying with a woman who goes around embarrassing me.”That was when her head reset back to normal. How was she supposed to live without her husband’s money?“Honey, don't misunderstand—”“This man right here is Doctor Beck. If you so much as knew anything about relationships, you'd have heard me mention his name at least a thousand times this week.”“Honey—”“Shut up and apologize to the two of them right now before I personally sue you for slander and defamation.”“Honey—”“Right now!” Her husband roared.Swallowing hard, Catherine lowered her head. “I'm sorry,” she muttered to the two of them.“Say it properly before I change my mind and you tell them in court!”“I’m really sorry!” she shouted, her voice breaking into tears.“Good. No

“Bella, is that you?” Cole heard his mother calling from the kitchen.“It's me,” he said, taking off his boots and switching into the comfy slippers by the door. He padded across the room to his mother in the kitchen.“You're back so early?” His mother glanced at him. “I’m almost done making a surprise meal for you.”“What?” Cole tried to peek at what she was making, but she turned around.“Go wash up or something. This is my territory.”Cole smiled. “I'll be out around nine thirty. Is Bella back?”“No. Maybe she stopped over for her shift. She’d normally come home sometimes to change her clothes.” Then her face softened. “She said you paid her fees.”Cole nodded.“I'm so grateful, Cole. You are such a blessing to this family.”“As the man of the house, this is my responsibility.”“You’re back with that again. Did you see her in school? She did mention you paid for some project too.”“Yeah,” Cole nodded.“She's still forming up with that attitude?”Cole nodded again.“Don't worry. I k

Damn. Why was she changing the topic so fast? “Oh, she did?” he said, trying to show that he was uninterested, but you can’t hide from her when she’s about to drop a bomb. “She doesn’t know you’re back. Oh, how she is going to be shocked to see you,” she muttered. Cole shrugged. “I made some cookies this evening. You could give some to her too. Let me go get them.” Cole watched in horror as she stood up. When did silence mean agreeing to something? “Mom…” he called, going after her. “She can talk to Bella too. I almost forgot. The times she's been here, she gets along so well with Bella that you'd think they were blood sisters.” Cole ran his hand through his hair as he watched his mother enthusiastically package the cookies she made. Twenty minutes later, Cole was driving along the street, a box of cookies his only passenger and companion on the ride to meet Dora. “Shit,” he muttered under his breath as he pressed the accelerator. Four years ago, when his mother was sick an

Priscilla nodded slowly. “You look gorgeous, ma’am.” What was happening when a woman who didn’t usually ask for compliments was suddenly asking for one?Priscilla cautiously followed Amanda back inside. She was literally dressed like she was going to a beauty pageant competition.“I’m done, Dora,” Amanda called, walking effortlessly into the sitting room.Priscilla glanced at the room. She caught sight of a man. It all made sense now. Amanda was going through all this because her husband was here—and she had been spilling some nonsense hours ago about having issues with him.Issues indeed.Amanda did a three-sixty turn in front of Dora—or at least, that was what she convinced herself she was doing—but the confused look on Cole’s face was her biggest satisfaction of all.“I’d ask you out right now if I were a man,” Dora muttered.Amanda smiled, waving it off. “Stop that. But thanks for the compliment.”Throughout the Livestream, Priscilla could only manage to keep her mouth closed whil

“Those are the new trainees,” the Scarface man said as he walked past a group of young men, bowling and screaming at each other as they tried to pin one another down.“We occasionally have women join, but most don’t make it to the end of training. We just let them go—only about five percent finish,” he added.A man doing push-ups caught Cole’s eye—every muscle in his upper body stood out like he was built for combat. For a man like this, lifting someone off the ground would be effortless.“We have about one hundred and fifty men at the moment,” the Scarface man continued, leading Cole toward a dimly lit corner, bulbs flickering weakly above. “Our goal is two hundred by year’s end.”Cole didn’t reply. He pounded a fist against a nearby window. “We’re coming in,” he said, keeping pace.A few feet away, they stopped at a door. The Scarface man kicked it open.Cole stepped inside, scanning the room. Seven people—one woman among them.“Where’s Marky?” the Scarface man asked, looking around

Moments later, Cole and Scarface arrived at the place where Blake’s uncle had been held. The man who was supposed to guard him lay dead on the floor. The lock in front of the cell was broken.“I guess I underestimated him, sir. I’m really sorry,” Scarface said, clenching his fists in frustration.“I’ll send men to find him—bring him back immediately—”Cole raised a hand. “Unless you have nothing else to do, don’t go after him. He’ll crawl back to me.”“I am so sorry. We shall start the welcoming party soon, sir. The drinks are coming—”“Are there no pressing matters that need attention?” Cole interrupted gently.“We can leave that aside; today is for you.”“We could party any day. If there’s anything I can do to help, let’s move,” Cole added, strolling back inside with calm authority.Scarface exhaled, relief washing over him. When the former Master had told him Cole would take over the brotherhood, he had pictured a reckless womanizer. Big parties, bigger trouble. But Cole’s loyalty

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you see us like this on your first day,” he began. “But what’s wrong with losing men? In this business, are you going to tell me you don’t know the risks or the chances of losing people?”Cole said nothing, nodding for him to continue.“If we can get things done in thirty minutes in a cleverer way, why stick to rules about sneaking around at night like rats?”“That’s your point?” Cole asked.“Yes. That’s my point.”Cole signaled for him to sit and then gestured at Scarface to speak his mind.“We are for losing more men on a simple operation like this,” Scarface said firmly, voice tight with resolve.“You—” Tamika started aggressively, but a cold stare from Cole stopped him.“I asked you earlier what your point was, and you’ve given it,” Cole said, turning to Elias. “Do either of them have the full story yet?”“No, sir. I was just getting started, but I had to stop because…well…” Elias shrugged.“Now, come back up here and continue.” Cole turned to Tam
