Chapter 31 - The Golden Eagle's Secret
Darian squeezed the paper with one hand and began to exhale rapidly. He used the other hand to rake through his hair. He looked at the paper again in anger. Lucius knew he was the last golden eagle. But how? Was Lucius there in the royal city’s central palace when his strange powers had acted out? That was the only way Lucius would have been able to recognize him.At that moment, he heard a knock on the door. Noel’s voice came from outside, “Darian, why are you in this room? Did another gift just arrive for you? You are really popular.”Darian stilled his nerves. He placed the paper under one of his sleeves and he walked towards the door to open it. He opened the door, determined to show nothing through his face. “It is no big deal. A servant came to drop some trash.”“Trash…” Noel placed a hand on his chin to process Darian’s words.Darian sighted a distraction. “Why don’t we go eat out and after, we can buy some groceries. Dimitri is not here to give us salty dishes anymore.”Noel m
Chapter 32 - The Golden Eagle's Bargain
Nora’s chest began to pound like a big drum. “Why you…”Darian raised his hand to stop Nora’s words. “Give me a break. You are already at your lowest. The best you can do is to hold your tongue.” Then he turned to the men, “How much does she owe?”One of the men with brown hair spoke, “The restaurant owes three grams of gold.”“I will pay the debt and buy this place,” Darian declared.Noel gasped in surprise, “What?”The same words escaped Nora’s mouth at the same time.Darian nodded his head.“And who are you to say that?” the man in brown hair asked.“You are just a child,” another said with black hair.“I am Darian. The one who assisted the Pearl family in their rise to power,” Darian spoke confidently, folding his hands behind his back. The men looked at themselves and understanding dawned on them. The men bowed. “We are sorry. Please forgive us,” the first man said.***Darian and Noel were back in their room. Darian sat on his bed reading a book. From time to time, he raised his
Chapter 33 - The Silent Confession
Darian’s eyes were closed now. It seemed he was in a trance. The being was a giant. It spread its wings so wide that Darian was sure its width could cover two cities. Darian’s eyes were fastened on the creature as he stood on a small patch of grass before the being. The eagle set its eyes on him. It did not open its mouth to speak, but Darian could hear everything it said. “Let me help you,” the eagle said.“Leave me alone. I can sort my issues without you! Let me go!” Darian was hysterical. The eagle became smaller and twisted itself until the tip of his strong feathers touched Darian’s forehead. Darian’s eyes closed again. “I will take charge of you for now. Just for you to understand that the power you need… is inside.”Darian’s body in the dungeon suddenly stopped moving. He went limp.Lucius had been watching for a while and he could not sit still. The manifestation in front of him scared him to the bone. What if that eagle manifested here and killed him? He had seen Darian’s man
Chapter 34 - The Scroll's Grasp
Darian wondered what he should say to Noel. The words dried in his throat. He stretched his hand over to Noel and finally found his voice, “Give me that now.”Noel smirked, “Why?”“Because that stuff is not yours. It is mine,” Darian said as he took a step closer.Noel went back a step, “I do not want to do that.”Darian’s voice became firmer, “I said give it back!”Noel was surprisingly calm, “I think there is something about this item. A flower-shaped wind entered from the window and sought this out from your stuff. It put the scroll into my hand.”Darian’s breathing became labored. What the hell was Noel talking about? “You must be hallucinating. Give that scroll to me right now.”Noel stepped backward and hurried behind a bed. “Chill, let me check what is in this scroll first.”Darian’s jaw clenched, “You will not.”Noel wondered aloud, “For this to make you this angry, there must be something about this scroll that is so special.”Darian hurried towards Noel, but Noel was faster.
Chapter 35 - The Village of Failures
The ground beneath him was soft green grass. He rose to see blue skies, a waterfall, and a flowing stream. A part of the green lawn was covered with flowers. Darian gazed around and was impressed with his surroundings. He never believed inside the scroll would look like this. He had expected something monstrous. Maybe there were monstrous sights in the scroll too. He would find that out. What he needed to do was to find Noel, and he had no clue how he would do that.He kept walking until he saw a sign board with the inscription, “Failures’ Village.”Darian wondered at the sign. He walked towards the place. Maybe someone in the village would have an idea where Noel could be. The more he got closer to the village, the more he noticed something from a distance. The place was dry of vegetation; anything green was not in sight. As he came closer, he could feel the dry wind and could sight the people. The people of that village looked like him. They had two hands and two legs, a head and al
Chapter 36 - The Price of Hope
Darian was sick of hiding. He also had a few things to tell that man too.The shopkeeper stepped forward. “Master Baxter, I saw him. He came to buy bread from my shop. But when he saw that there was none, he left. I believe he has left the village.”Master Baxter dipped his hand into a cloak and brought out a knife. He flung it straight at the shopkeeper. It went straight to his stomach and pierced him deep. He cried out in pain and fell to the floor. His hand reached for the head of the knife even as his two knees hit the floor. A pool of blood formed beneath him. His face went pale and his breaths were in gasps. Everyone around him moved away. No one dared to help him. They were all concerned for their own heads and safety. No one wanted to be on the bad side of Master Baxter. The man soon lay on the floor, helpless and dying.Darian’s eyes widened as he watched the scene. Master Baxter was really a cruel man.“Is voicing one’s opinion a thing deserving death in your eyes?” Darian a
chapter 37 - The seed of rebellion
The woman pointed one hand at the water and attempted to touch it, but she was shaking all over.Darian hurried behind them. He lifted one leg and kicked the woman into the water. She fell in with a scream and a loud splash. Before the man could protest, Darian had kicked him in too. The part they had fallen into was shallow so they could easily raise themselves.Their expressions changed immediately to wide smiles and shouts of joy. “There is really water outside our village? This is unbelievable,” the man exclaimed as he jumped around. The woman kept putting water in her mouth with the help of her hand. She had no time to reply to the man. After splashing around a while, Darian asked, “Will you two go tell the other villagers the real truth now?” His hands were folded in front of his chest and he looked very impatient. The man and woman looked at each other and nodded their heads. They got out of the water and the man asked him, “Can we really plant with this water?”Darian almost s
Chapter 38 - The Unmasking of Lord Baxter
Darian’s words were quick, “If you scream, I will cut you.” The five guards that were standing around unsheathed their swords and pointed them towards Darian. The villagers also brought out their weapons. Some held axes, others knives and swords.Darian’s order was clear, “Tell your men to drop their weapons. If not, I will cut your darling neck in two.”Baxter’s voice was hushed, but his words were clear. “Stand back,” he said to the five guards, with his body shaking like a leaf. The soldiers dropped their swords and two of the villagers tied them up and threw them in a corner where no one could see them.“Tie up Baxter’s hands too,” Darian instructed and another two of the villagers obeyed.Baxter’s face was covered in shame and sweat. “You all tricked me. How could you ally with this man against me?”Saras cleared his throat, “You tricked us first. We have seen the water outside our village. Your days of fraud are over.”Baxter gave a fake laugh of confidence, “You cannot defeat m
Chapter 39 - The Gem of Longevity
The room was full of grain and gold. Darian turned to the others and nodded. Sixty percent of the villagers in the room stepped out. They had a mission. The rest of the soldiers would be taken out by them, and by the others who had infiltrated the castle.Darian stood there, waiting and ready. The others with him faced the door, waiting. They knew that if the others they sent failed, the soldiers would rush into the room. Twenty minutes later, the sound of a trumpet was heard. Darian heaved a sigh of relief. The other villagers rejoiced. They laughed, danced, and hugged each other."Oh no!" Baxter asked, wide-eyed."What do you think?" Darian scoffed."It can't be!" Baxter moaned."Your army is gone... You're next," Darian grinned."No! Please spare me! I am sorry for all I have done," Baxter tried to move in his bonds. It was futile."Any last words?" Darian asked. The other villagers closed in.Darian seemed impatient. Baxter had said nothing in two minutes. That was too much time w
Chapter 40 - The Cave of Darkness
Saras’s eyes welled up with tears. “I grew up under the rule of Baxter. He was a tyrant that never got old. He ruled my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Finally, in my old age, I finally get to see the destruction of Baxter.”Tears rolled down his eyes. “Even if I die now, I am assured that my children and grandchildren can change their fate.” He wiped his eyes with his free hand and continued speaking. “Finally, Baxter, you will die and let us be free.”“We will be free!” the other villagers shouted as they lifted their right hand in salutation. Saras raised the gem and smashed it on the ground.“No!” Baxter screamed in pain as he watched the gem fall to the floor and crash into a million pieces.Darian rushed behind Baxter and cut the ropes tying Baxter’s hands. Baxter’s legs were still tied so he moved like a worm to where the crashed pieces of the purple gem fell. He picked up some pieces and tried to join them together, but it was futile. The color of the gem began to
