Chapter 21
Chapter 21LucasI paused, my hands hovering above the car door as I stared at him.How did he figure out where I was? I stared at him, a smug smile rose on his face as he approached from the shadows. He walked forward, a taunting smile on his face as he approached. I squinted my eyes in disbelief, thinking I was just delusional but I soon confirmed the truth. He stood a few metres away from me, a smug smile on his face before he spoke. “So this is where you decided to hide?” He asked, his voice raised slightly.Alexander chuckled lightly before he continued. “If it weren't for your wealth, how would you get out of jail so easily?” He scoffed but I rolled my eyes.Ignoring his antics but Freya emerged from the shadows and I could feel my blood boiling. She smiled sweetly as she approached, her hands curling round Alex’s elbows. I gritted my teeth in anger as I watched them share a kiss right in front of me.What did I expect? They were always this shameless. I thought to myself but Fr

Chapter 22 Lucas “...You can stay here without worries, I'll make sure they attend to you well.” She finished, smiling at me and I nodded even though I didn't hear half of what she said. Estelle walked forward and I tailed slowly behind her, listening to every instruction she gave. “You can consider this place your home. Feel free to do anything you want.” She completed, turning and bumping into me who stayed immersed in thoughts. I stepped back immediately, muttering an apology. Estelle shook her hands in the air, saying it was nothing before she turned towards the door. “Here's your room. You can call any of the maids if you have something that needs urgent help.” She said and I nodded. I watched on as she opened the door, placing the luggage into the room. She turned towards me who stood frozen at the doorstep before she called out to my name. “Lucas?” She called, and I stepped in immediately, waving off my thoughts. “I think you should be fine here. I'll get going now.”

Chapter 23LucasWhen I went into the room, everything had been arranged and kept neatly for me. I bounced on the bed and stared up at the ceiling, my thoughts wandering. My phone buzzed beside me and I felt my jaw clench. Throughout the drive, down to this place, I've been trying to ignore it but the notifications kept coming. With each buzz I involuntarily flinched, it felt like someone was poking at an open wound. Finally, I could not take it anymore and I grabbed the phone and unlocked it, already knowing what I would find. More rumors. More accusations. This time someone had posted screenshots claiming I had faked documents to get into my father's family. The comments underneath were worse than the post itself."He's a scammer""I knew something was off about him""Poor people will do anything for money"I scrolled through them, feeling something heavy settle in my chest. It wasn't just strangers anymore. People I used to know from school were sharing these posts, adding their ow

Chapter 24The morning sun filtered through the curtains of Lucas room, but it had a chill air accompanying it. He reached out to the bedside table to pick his phone as he looked at the thousand messages that flooded his phone. He opened his mouth in shock as he looked up to the top of the headlines and saw his own name written up there with the hashtag #LucasTheScammerHis hands moved on its own, scrolling through post after post. Each one worse and stings more than the last. Screenshots of bank transactions that he had never made, numbers with too many zeros flowing from the company's account to his “personal account”. Photos of him, some he recognized from charity events, others from business dinner, but they'd been edited, darkened, placed alongside images of men in expensive suits with their faces blurred out. The captions painted him as a con artist, a fraud who'd built his lifestyle on stolen money.“Breaking news: Lucas Johnson exposed as fraud” one of the headlines said.“Lu

Chapter 25If there is one thing that Lucas hold dear to his heart, it's the ability to hold on to his reputation. He can endure the stain that came with the name but can go to any length to make sure that his reputation is secured. His reputation is dwindling more than he thinks and it's beginning to get him upset. Although Estelle had given him her word that she was going to look into the matter, he knew that if there will be further delay in the dissemination of information that will lead to the clearing of his name, his reputation will be in the gutters and that's not what he wanted for himself.“Stay in the villa, do not go out” Remembering Estelle words, he sighed.“How will I clear my name from the news??? I cannot be locked up here and expect the name to be cleared up by some wishing star,” He thought to himself.Placing his hands on his chin, he calculated how he was going to leave the villa without raising the alarm as he knew that although he was “free”, there were some se

Chapter 26The journey to the house had become slow as Lucas was thinking about the earlier incident that had occurred in the afternoon. It was in only a short while that he had become rich so he couldn't pinpoint who was the enemy.“Has there been anyone who has been watching me from the beginning?” He pondered.Although he was still careful in his movement making sure that he was not being followed.Getting to the villa, he removed his cap, smoothing his hair with one hand and trying to compose himself. Maybe Estelle wasn't home yet. Maybe he could slip upstairs and change, then pretend he'd been in his room all afternoon. But the moment he opened the door, he knew that his hope was futile.Estelle was sitting down on the chair facing the door as if she had been waiting for him personally. Circling the glass of wine which was in her hands. She did not greet him when she saw him rather she looked at him with those cold calculating eyes “Lucas,” she said, her voice cold. “Sit down,”
Chapter 27
Chapter 27The doorbell rang, as Lucas got up from the room wondering who could be visiting at the hour because none of his friends knew the villa and he was pretty certain that Estelle had not yet revealed her location to anyone. Before he got to the entrance, a servant had collected the parcel and had brought it over to him. He realized that the parcel contained an invitation which was written in gold metallic font. You are cordially invited to the Elite Summit Lucas held the invitation in his hand, reading every word. Tonight, at the university's Grand Ballroom—the very location he'd been publicly humiliated a few days earlier with the plagiarism accusation. Elite Summit was campus lore, an annual event where student activists, wealthy alumni, media figures, and corporate sponsors all mixed and mingled. It was part networking party, part society pageant, the kind of event where careers were launched and alliances were forged. He had heard of it in the past but had not being privi

Chapter 28The integrity speech had concluded without ever once referring to Lucas by name, but with a significance that had been unambiguous. References to "those who abuse their offices," to "the unrestrained evils of nepotism," to "maintaining standards even in privilege"—each had been a biting rebuke, and each had known it.Lucas had sat through the entire affair, having a nonchalant look throughout the session. When at last there was applause, he'd risen in a slow pace not wishing to be discovered. The ballroom now transitioned into network mode. The formal seating arrangement dissolved as the guests rose from their tables, champagne glass in hand, forming groups, with fake smiles and hidden motives.Lucas rose slowly, adjusting his suit jacket and looking around the room with the careful attention of a man stepping through a minefield.A group of students he'd gotten used to his first year huddled together in a tight group near one of the cocktail tables, their group tiny. As Lu

Chapter 29The ride back to the villa was in silence. Lucas set down at the back of the car observing the city lights as it caused illumination for the surroundings. Estelle played with her phone while having a cold expression on. Neither uttered a word, although Lucas had a lot of confusion and wanted to be cleared on some of them. And when they finally got to the house, Estelle went to her room telling Lucian that she was tired and needed to rest. Lucas stood there and watched her, and then retreated into his room but he could not sleep. He thought about the man at the Summit – his eyes which spoke volumes, the way Estelle had acted when Lucas had tried to chase him down.An hour passed as different thoughts raced through his mind, his curiosity was getting a better part of him and he needed answers. He went to Estelle’s study and knocked on the door.“Come in,” She said.Lucas went inside the study.“We need to talk,” Lucian said.Estelle looked up from the pile of documents as she

Chapter 30Lucas' mind wandered to the conversations that he had shared with Estelle over the few weeks. Every sincere assurance sounded like manipulation. Every time she had told him to be quiet, to trust her, to leave things in her hands.“Was it to protect him or to control him?” He pondered.Recalling the words that she had said earlier, he sighed. In the world of power and politics, he needed help not from outsiders or from the ones who claimed to be his “sister”, he needed genuine ones. People who had an idea of who he is but had no stake in whatever game that was played behind the scenes.Charlotte and Dominic. They were the only ones who stood by him. They were the only ones who'd stood by him for everything—the plagiarism accusation, the Twitter storm and the rest. They'd never demanded anything in return, never tried to make money out of his situation. If he was going to act on it, he needed assistance. And they were the only people he had.Having come to the conclusion, Luc
