CHAPTER 11 — THE FINAL HOUR
"Kae!"Two small bodies crashed into me before I could even process what was happening. Cent and Vivi's arms wrapped around my waist, their faces buried against my chest as they sobbed my name over and over."We missed you so much," Vivi whispered through her tears. "We thought we'd never see you again."Cent pulled back to look at me, his eyes red and puffy. "Everything feels empty without you...." His voice cracked. “We wondered how we'll be able to survive now that you're gone. Thankfully, Mila has been a huge help.”Relief washed over me as I squeezed them into a tight hug, my own vision blurring. "I'm here now. I'm here."Over their heads, I caught Kambi watching us with an unreadable expression. She gave me a small wink before quietly excusing herself from the room, leaving the candidates to their reunions."How are you even here?" I asked, still holding them tight."Mila brought us," Cent said, gesturing across the room where I spotted a familiar figure embracing Tobi.Mila loo
CHAPTER 12 — GOING INTO THE TRIAL
Morning came too soon. Kambi's voice cut through my fitful sleep, calling us to breakfast. We arrived in the open room, which was flooded with many family members of the trial participants. I felt uncomfortable because I'm not used to a full crowd."Oh my god." Vivi patted Cent's arm severely. "Look!" We both turned to the direction she was pointing and Cent's jaw dropped to the floor as he joined Vivi to gasp.Across the room was a spread of varieties of food, all laid out on the round table. This was more food than they'd seen in months."Is this how you've been eating?" Mila asked, her eyes also widened at the sheer sight of seeing these types of food. "I haven't seen most of them in my life.""It was only yesterday we saw this too," Tobi answered as he grabbed a small loaf of bread and stuffed everything right into his mouth. "Eat more," I urged my siblings, loading their plates. Across the table, Nira sat with her own family, a sister who looked so much like her that I wondered
CHAPTER 13 — THE FIRST CULLING.
Wind roared past my ears, shredding the sound of collective wail of terror of the unluckies that seemed to tear the sky apart. Aside from rank A, B and some C with parachutes, three-quarters of the sky remained broken, bodies spinning, flailing, crying out until their voices vanished in the gravity fall.Voices cracked and broke as people shrieked for anyone who might save them. The screams layered over each other in a horrific symphony of the doomed, punctuated by the rush of wind. I tumbled through empty space, my stomach lurching into my throat. I clawed desperately at the air like I could slow myself, like panic could grant me wings. But I had no parachute. Only gravity’s grip.Terror consumed every rational thought as the ground rushed toward us with murderous intent.Through the chaos, I spotted one of the boys from earlier—the alliance group. His parachute had deployed, the white canopy billowing above him like salvation itself. I kicked frantically through the air, stretchin
CHAPTER 14 — THE MAZE OF DOOM
The plane banked and flew away, leaving us in stunned silence. I looked around at the group of survivors to see how our significant number reduced by almost a half of it. I'm sure that the number of us out of the original hundred from our plane alone would be less than sixty now. Maybe forty at best. "Now, are we done?" one asked, panting. "Done?" Another scoffed bitterly. "We are far from done. Remember they need four."Yes, the real trial has just begun. Tobi chuckled, shrugging my shoulder."Thanks, dude." he smiled. "Would have been a dead meat back there."I returned his smile. "We watch each other's backs, that's the only way we can get home on time.""Yeah. Exactly."I suddenly heard a mechanical grinding sound coming from somewhere."Where is it coming from?" someone asked as we all frantically look for the source of the sound. "That doesn't sound good." Tobi breathed. And he's right, it doesn't sound welcoming. Up ahead of us, far from where we were all standing, was a
CHAPTER 15 — THE DEATH CORRIDOR
The maze looked like a coffin with death closely behind us as it came pounding on heavy boots.I looked around to search for any clue when I noticed a ticking sound that made me pause."Wait," I hissed, throwing my arm out to stop the group."Do you hear that?" I asked."Hear what?" Tobi asked"The sound of a clock ticking but mechanical. I don't know how to describe it because it's faint.""Everyone, let's turn back. Now!"The blonde girl glared at me as I walked past her. "Are you insane? He's right behind us!" with the other two players joining in the protest. They refused to go with us, hoping we would become a distraction for them to escape. "Tobi," I grabbed his shoulder. "You hear that, right? The ticking?"Tobi cocked his head, frowning. "Hear what? I don't—"Then a loud ‘CLANG!’ heard and I think Tobi heard it because he stared at meSuddenly, metal spikes shot from the walls like deadly flowers blooming, impaling the three Participants who'd refused to listen. Their scream
CHAPTER 16 — HANGING ON THE LINE
After they left, something touched me and I looked up to see Tobi descending towards me“This does not look good.” he hauled me up “How will you climb in this condition?” My arms felt like lead, my vision kept sliding in and out of focus. But what choice did I have?"This way's faster!" Tobi's voice echoed from above.I forced my battered body upward, gripping the rope with slick, bloody hands. Somehow, maybe adrenaline, or sheer desperation, I made it to the ledge. Kingsley and Danny waited there."We need to move," Tobi said. "Now.""Where's Nira?" I gasped."Heading for the exit," Tobi replied. “We only came back to get you.”We ran from the top of the walls until something crashed behind us. The bounty hunter was still pursuing Nira, his rifle firing in controlled bursts."She'll be fine," Tobi assured me, seeing my expression. "Jokob marked all the safe paths."I had to trust him despite the fact that Jokob could be a ripper too. We reached the end of the maze and climbed down t
CHAPTER 17 — BELLY OF THE TITANOBOA
I'd always wondered what dying would feel like. Turns out, it's a lot like drowning in a giant snake's stomach while there's someone somewhere waiting to shoot at you. Pain. Wood. Liquid. The three sensations hit me in rapid succession as consciousness slammed back into my battered body.Note to self: next time I'm swallowed by a giant serpent, remember to pack a life jacket. My hands flailed desperately until they found a log—part of the shattered bridge—and I pulled myself up, coughing and sputtering.‘I'm alive. Somehow, impossibly, I'm alive.’I looked around in horror at my new prison. The serpent's stomach was a vast, cathedral-like chamber with ribbed walls that pulsed with each heartbeat. Floating debris drifted everywhere—chunks of wood, torn clothing, and... bodies. The corpses of other players bobbed in the murky fluid like grotesque life preservers. The liquid itself was a nightmare of colors—sickly green swirling with crimson streaks, like infected blood. Phosphorescen
CHAPTER 18 — REWAKENED
There was a bright light that painfully shot straight at me. I groaned in pain, trying to adjust my vision. "Where I'm I?" I thought, "Is this the after life?" After my eyes were fully adjusted, I found myself in a void filled with a big floating screen right before me that looked exactly like the psych experiment. Another popped up by my left, then another by my right. It grew to half a dozen, then a few dozens, until the entire space blazed with light.Wondering what was happening, I looked everywhere for a clue until a radar shot straight at me from behind. It felt like a painful ant bite but that didn't last long when two more shot at me.Before I knew it, different shots from different angle penetrated right into my body. The pain was excruciating, like I was being chewed on and the first shot from the screen before me snapped me back to awareness.I was breathing. Heavily and painfully, but breathing. My wounds were still there and painful but I'm alive. A translucent screen
CHAPTER 19 — IN A PRETTY BAD SHAPE
My vision blurred as I watched them descend, each blink sending waves of pain through my skull. The wound on my side had turned an ugly purple color, and I could feel something wrong spreading through my bloodstream like ice water.‘I need to get to the green airdrop.’My system's display flickered weakly in the corner of my vision: HEALTH: TEN PERCENT. STATUS: TOXIN DETECTED. TIME TO PARALYSIS: THIRTY-NINE MINUTES, FORTY-TWO SECONDS.Thirty-nine minutes before I'm completely dead. The green airdrop was about two hundred meters ahead. Even from this distance, I could see at least fifteen survivors converging on it like sharks smelling blood. I crouched behind a fallen log, gripping my serpent knife with trembling fingers. My gut told me to stay put—wait it out, then pick through whatever scraps remained. But time wasn't a luxury I had.The survivors hit the airdrop at once. A redhead with a crossbow put a bolt straight through some kid's throat before his fingers even grazed the
CHAPTER 20 — STUCK IN THE MIDDLE
I'm feeling something warm, something soothing. Wait! I can feel something? How is that possible? The countdown was till zero but, how I'm I still alive? Or is this how the afterlife is? I have so many questions in my head that sadly, I won't get answers to them. Suddenly, I heard murmuring in the background and I wondered what it was until a bright light appeared, forcing me to open my eyes. I looked up to see Tobi sobbing and on my shoulder was a syringe buried into my skin. He revived me. I struggled to get up but I was still weak and in so much pain from all the injuries that my grunt caught Tobi's attention. "Kae?—" he paused "Kae!" Tobi hugged me tightly again as tears streamed down his cheeks. "Can't believe you're okay. Was scared I was going to lose you again.""I'm not okay." I showed him the gunshot wound spreading black on my stomach. His face went white. He stared at the syringe he was holding and looked at me. "I don't this will solve everything.""Well, it didn
