CHAPTER 31 — OUT OF THE ORDINARY
The tornado released us without warning, sending us plummeting toward the ground like broken dolls. I closed my eyes, bracing for the impact that would end everything—But instead of hard earth, we hit something soft and slippery. Massive leaves, thick as mattresses, caught our fall and sent us sliding down their curved surfaces until we rolled to a stop on solid ground.I groaned, checking myself for injuries. Bruised ribs, cuts from debris, but nothing broken. Around me, the others were picking themselves up with similar relieved expressions."Everyone alive?" I called out."Define alive," Tobi muttered, spitting out sand.As I stood, I realized why the tornado had stopped so abruptly. The ground beneath us was solid asphalt and concrete. An abandoned town with streets and sidewalks that couldn't sustain a sandstorm. Without loose sand to fuel it, the tornado had simply dissipated. But this wasn't just any abandoned town. It was completely overrun by vegetation that looked like it
CHAPTER 32 — B FOR BETRAYAL.
She fixed an arrow in her crossbow and was about to strike again when Tobi pulled me right behind him, raising his hand to stop her. "I don't know what your history is with him, but it shouldn't result in this.""His right." one of her team members agreed, placing a hand on her shoulder to calm her down. "We are all forced to make decisions just to survive, I'm sure he didn't mean it.""I should be the one asking you." I frowned, "The moment we fell off the plane, we were on our own.""Well, I'm glad to see folks like you," one of them chipped in "More normal people. We were starting to think we were all alone."There's another one I recognized, she was one of those we went to the savior's parade with. She told us about the champions. She seemed to be friends with Jokob, so I doubted she'd remember me. What's her name again? She spotted me and approached with a mixture of relief and wariness."You look familiar," she paused, analyzing me. "Savior's parade."She snapped her fingers e
CHAPTER 33 — HUMAN CAGE.
I expected threats, maybe a beating, not something as sick as this. I watched in horror as Bitus pointed at another group of participants, his voice carrying across the camp with brutal authority. "You three. Go find where they're hiding. Bring back proof, or don't come back at all."Three terrified people scrambled to obey, their faces showing they knew death awaits whether they return or not. "We have seen what we came for," Vira whispered beside me. "We should leave before we get caught too.""No." The word came out harder than I intended. "I won't let Jokob and Kingsley die in that cage.""That's how the game works, Kae." Her voice was cold, practical. "This is exactly why—""If you're so lacking in empathy, maybe you should switch places with him," I snapped. She groaned in frustration. "This is why I don't want to ally with you. You make everything unnecessarily difficult."Before she could continue arguing, a commotion erupted in the camp below. Guards dragged three prisoner
CHAPTER 34 — DEATH-BLOOM
the plant shook the ground, knocking us off our stand.Looking up, we saw one of the massive flower buds slowly opening. Petals the size of shields peeled back to reveal rows of crystalline teeth that gleamed like daggers. While we were watching it open, another massive vine lunged down with lightning speed, grabbing one of the guards.I threw myself sideways, rolling across the concrete as the plant went for another person. In the chaos, Little seized his chance. The remaining guard holding him was staring in horrified fascination at his companion's fate when Little drove his knee up into the man's groin with surprising force. The guard doubled over with a strangled gasp, releasing his grip on Little, who immediately sprinted toward me. But the guard recovered quickly, rage overriding pain as he lurched after the boy.He never made it as another vine whipped out, coiling around his waist and yanking him backward. His curses turned to screams as more tendrils wrapped around his limbs,
CHAPTER 35 — A MILLION-LEGGED PROBLEM
The air hissed with lethal energy, lightning stitching the world shut around us. Behind was certain death, below unknown terror. All eyes waited for me to decide. Suddenly, two familiar figures stumbled toward us through the smoking ruins of Bitus's camp. "Kae!" Jokob's voice cracked with relief as he and Kingsley reached us, both bleeding from multiple cuts but miraculously alive. "So glad to see you." Kingsley shrugs. "Guess, I wouldn't be alive if not for you." He sounded nonchalant about it. Not like I blame him. The lightning web, fifteen feet away was closing in fast. No time for detailed reunions. I updated them on what's going on. "I'm with Vira," Jokob said immediately, not even hesitating. "Jump and deal with whatever's down there. Running will just get us fried." Kingsley shook his head vigorously. "No way. Tobi's right—we run. There has to be another route we haven't seen yet. Jumping blind is suicide." Their split decision landed on me like a crushing wei
CHAPTER 36 — THE WENDIGO LAIR
A scream that tore through the tunnel was inhuman and primal which vibrated straight into our bones. Not hunger or agony but something twisted between them. The wail echoed, multiplying until it became a symphony of nightmare sounds."We have to find a place to hide," I urged everyone. We searched hysterically for a hiding place, big rocks scattered around. We spotted one and raced there, but it wasn't too big to hide all of us. I saw another at an extreme end and decided to go for it. "I'll go with you." Vira volunteered and we made a run for it. I dove in a split second before it appeared.Spider-limbs bent at impossible angles. Rotting flesh was dried and mummified, peeling like old wallpaper. Its skin looked tightly sealed directly to the bone, so tight that every part of its body stood in sharp horror. The creature's movement was unnatural, boneless despite its skeletal appearance, flowing across stone like water. The head made my stomach turn. A skull barely covered by pa
CHAPTER 37 — DEADLY SILENCE.
Silence had never felt so deadly. We were one sound away from dying. The first Wendigo’s terrifying eyes snapped toward us. Then, they locked on me. The world stopped breathing with me. Instinct hit before reason. I grabbed Little’s hand, pulling him close, both of us pressed against the wall as the creature’s wet, ragged breath filled the tunnel. Its head tilted, bones cracking like twigs as that empty, rotting face fixed on our hiding place. I could hear my heartbeat pounding against the stone wall that it felt too loud. One sound, one mistake, and we were dead. Then it stood still and I saw what It was trying to do. It was listening and waiting. I squeezed Little's trembling hand to assure him that everything will be ok.Then, as luck will have it, it walked past us, giving us a chance to slide out."Follow my lead," I whispered. "Only Move when I move." Little nodded. We slid past the creature, our bodies pressed against the cold stone wall. Its rotting stench filled my no
CHAPTER 38 — HOLLOW LIGHT.
Blood soaked through my shirt faster than my mind could process the pain.every heartbeat felt like it might tear me open again. Little’s voice broke through the haze. Frantic and trembling but alive."Kae! Oh god, you're bleeding everywhere!" Little rushed over with an armful of medical supplies, his small hands shaking as he tried to open a package of bandages."I'm okay," I lied, watching crimson spread across my shirt. The claw marks were deeper than I'd thought. "Just... help me wrap these up."Little's eyes were wide with panic as he helped me peel away the torn fabric. "This is all my fault. If I hadn't made noise—""Hey." I caught his chin gently, making him look at me. "Don't blame yourself."He nodded, but I could see the doubt in his eyes. He went to grab some medical supplies and helped me wind the bandages around my injuries. The white gauze turned pink almost immediately."Are you sure you can keep going?" he whispered."I have to." I tested my range of motion, wincing.
CHAPTER 39 — AN UNCONVENTIONAL PLAN.
The cave convulsed like a living thing, coughing dust and regret into the air. I stumbled through falling debris, blood pounding in my ears, eyes locked on the boulder that sealed Little's fate. Each quake whispered the same truth: you failed him. "Are you completely insane?" Tobi's familiar voice cut through the chaos as strong arms grabbed my shirt and yanked me backward. I hit the ground hard, the boulder slamming into the spot where I'd been standing a heartbeat before. "Standing under a collapsing ceiling like some kind of death wish?" He hauled me to my feet, his grip firm on my arm. I looked up into his concerned face, and another set of guilt began eating me up again. "Tobi... how did you—" His eyes swept the cavern, taking in the destruction. Then they settled on me with a question I couldn't bear to answer. "Where's Little?" The words died in my throat. I met his gaze, and I watched understanding dawn across his features like a slow-spreading stain.
CHAPTER 40 — THROUGH THE HIVE
The plan was reckless. Maybe even suicidal. But Little's time is running out and I'm damned to wait for a safe options. The centipede lay coiled in the darkness, its armored body glistening like blackened steel, each breath rumbling through the ground beneath my boots. One move could bring the entire hive crashing down on us, but it was our only way out. “I think I found a way to wake it up,” I whispered. Jokob’s head snapped toward me. “Kae, are you insane? That thing could tear us apart before we even blink.” “Then we’ll just have to blink faster.” I crouched, scanning the chamber until my eyes caught the faint glow of a cracked vent, steam pulsing out in intervals from the creature’s midsection. A nerve point. If I could hit it hard enough, I might jolt it awake and make it mad enough to smash through the blocked tunnel. Tobi groaned quietly. “I can’t tell if you’re brave or just completely stupid.” “Both.” I pulled out my venom knife, took a deep breath, and dug i
