Chapter 110: The Getaway
Eliana I had barely drifted into sleep when my door creaked open. I wasn’t expecting anyone and I was sure I went to bed with Pearl so my heart dropped into my stomach. I reached under my pillow for my phone and pulled it close to my chest, keeping my eyes shut. Then I felt a pair of hands on my arm and immediately flung my pillow at whoever it was. “Calm down Eliana..” Pearl whispered and tossed the pillow back on the bed. I rolled my eyes and fell back on the bed. “That’s what you get for creeping up on me like that. It’s the freaking wee hours of the morning, where are you coming from and what do you want?” I grunted, my face buried in my pillow. “I wanted us to discuss something..” she blurted and the way her voice sounded, it sure was an emergency. I slowly sat up on the bed and took a good look at her. “Pearl… is everything alright?” I asked and she hung her head. My room was barely lit, so I leaned over to the edge of the bed and turned the light on. “Remember I lied…”
Chapter 111: The Getaway Two
Eliana I glanced at Pearl and she bit her lower lip. “We don’t really need Victor, we can take care of ourselves. Eliana can drive..” she added but Damian was already walking away. “Being able to drive is obviously not the issue Pearl, it’s not safe for either of you out there and I’m not letting you go to whatever mall and spend hours there all alone.” He warned. His voice was firm and he didn’t even look up from his phone as he scrolled. “Damian, we're not kids. It’s just a trip to the mall and we’ll head straight home once we’re done..” I pressed. He looked up at me and then slowly shook his head. “The answer is still no Eliana, I’m not letting you go out there alone and unprotected. You’ll wait for Victor and that’s final.” His voice was stern and I knew there was no changing his mind. Damian went upstairs and I dropped into the sofa, rubbing my fingers against my temple. Victor wouldn’t be as easy to trick as Rostella’s driver and I’m not sure Pearl brought sleeping pills w
Chapter 112: Damian’s fury
ElianaVictor drove fast, the ambulance in front of us drove faster. I couldn’t believe Jax and Rostella were in the same room, unsupervised. My skin crawled just thinking of the million horrific things she could have done to him if we had not visited at the time we did. Pearl rode in the ambulance with her brother while Victor and I stayed in his car. My heart thumped loudly because the mere sight of Rostella sent chills down my spine. I tried to look out the window to calm down but I just couldn’t stop my brain from bringing up old memories of Rostella’s cruelty. Then I felt it. A hand on mine, not forced, not rough. Victor held my hand and squeezed it gently. Even without saying a word, my body understood his message and calmed down. I took a deep breath, fastened my seatbelt and put up a smile. “Nothing will happen to Jax..” Victor said softly. “Thank goodness you both arrived at the time you did, and I’m very sure she didn’t get the chance to do anything to him..”His words
Chapter 113: Silver Lining
Eliana When I finally heard the sound of running water, I let out a deep breath hoping she had finally stopped crying and trying to calm my racing thoughts. Damian's anger was scary, and I knew I had to tread carefully. While I thought of way to soothe Damian’s anger, I walked over to my wardrobe, searching for something comfortable for Pearl to wear. My mind kept wandering back to Jax, and I prayed that he was okay. Rostella's presence in the same hospital ward as him still had me on edge.I figured the robe I mentioned earlier wouldn’t be the best fit for the weather so I picked out a soft t-shirt and matching sweatpants, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting it to be Damian, but it was an unknown number."Eliana," a low, smooth voice said on the other end. "It's Victor. I thought you'd want to know... Jax is stable. The doctor with him just called, and he said there were no signs of... tampering." He explained.I let out a sigh of relief, my grip on the phone t
Chapter 114: Game Night
Damian“… and get me the name of the nurse on duty when Rostella was in that ward..” I ordered and Victor nodded silently. The thought of how many ways things could have gone wrong if Rostella was really serious about causing harm, made me shudder. First Preston left a message, then Rostella showed up a day after at the hospital. I wasn’t angry because Eliana and Pearl visited Jax at the hospital, the only thing upsetting me was the idea of lying to me. Victor returned to the car and charged the engine. We drove home in silence and I seized the opportunity to think of new ways to strengthen the security at the house. “Sir..” Victor broke the silence. “Hmm?” “If I may, I’d suggest you level up from just armed security men.” I lifted my chin from my folded fist and glanced in his direction. How on earth did he know what was going on in my head?“Are you psychic?” I blurted and he scoffed. “I just used common sense. You’re worrying about the safety of everyone under your roof, so
Chapter 115: Xavier’s Heartbreak
Damian The game night had been a perfect distraction from such an overwhelming day, and I had finally managed to push my worries about Preston, Jax and Rostella to the back of my mind. Mila's idea had been a great one we spent the evening laughing, playing games, and I'd even gotten the chance to catch up a little with Serena. She was doing better, and that was all that mattered.“I would like to return to my duties, Sir.” She whispered while we were playing a game of cards. “In due time, for now, focus on recovery.” I replied with a smile and she nodded slowly. It was so nice to see her so happy and full of energy like the Serena I’d always known. As the night drew to a long awaited close, and everyone started to retire to their rooms, I knew I had to get back to business immediately. I pulled Xavier and Victor to the side.“I need to see you two in my office. Come with me.” I ordered and began to walk away immediately while they followed closely.Soon, we got to my office.Once
Chapter 116: Cameras and Action
DamianI bid Victor goodnight, and he headed off to his room, the soft tapping of his feet on the floor boards fading into silence as he walked further. I stared into the darkness for a few minutes before continuing on my own.I made my way to my room, feeling a bit more at ease after finally talking to Xavier and somehow sorting out his... issue. The nurse thing was just a bump in the road, but I'd make sure he got over it. At least he didn’t look so sad when he left.As I opened the door to the room, I was surprised to see Mila still awake, sitting on the couch with a book in her hand, a pair of glasses perched on the end of her nose. The soft glow of the lamp cast a warm light, and for a moment, I just stood there, taking in the peacefulness of the scene and how beautiful she looked basking in the light."Hey, you're still up, and are those new glasses?" I said, walking over to her, my voice low to avoid breaking the calmness. She looked up, a soft smile on her face, her eyes fil
Chapter 117: Lunches and Charges
Damian The first set of cameras were installed and Mila had already returned upstairs. Victor took the coffee mugs inside and returned almost immediately with bottles of water. “Do you think they’ll be able to finish the set ups today?” I asked as I flicked the cap of the bottle and lifted it up to my lips. Victor shrugged his shoulders and gulped down his own bottles. “I’m not so sure, sir.” He muttered. The sun was blazing above and sweat dripped down my head but I barely even noticed. I just focused on drafting out spots that needed surveillance. The day stretched and hours passed. Mike and his team that later joined him were super fast, so half the manor was covered. “whooo!” Xavier cheered, throwing his hands in the air like he had achieved anything when all he did was just lurk around and bark orders. “This is one big house sir..” Mike blurted as he wiped sweat off of his forehead. I shrugged and sat on the bench behind me, sweat dripping down my back. “Hey you guys!” El
Chapter 118: Warn
Eliana I decided to check on Pearl and Jax instead of joining the others outside. Maybe it was the sisterly instinct I had towards Pearl kicking in, but I couldn't just shake off the feeling that she probably needed me in that moment. As I entered the room, I was extremely surprised to see him awake and conscious. It was the first time I'd ever seen him like this, and for a moment, I just stood there, taking it all in.He looked zoned out as usual approached them, taking no notice of me so I walked to Pearl who was sitting on a couch by his bed."When did he wake up?" I asked her, trying to keep my voice down. Her expression was a mixture of relief and worry. "It's honestly a miracle, and I should be happy but he's having problems speaking. I don't know why." She rapped.I frowned, moving closer to his bed. He was pale, his eyes sunken, but he was looking at me like he recognized me but that would be impossible."E...li...ana?" he whispered softly, his voice barely audible.I took
Chapter 119: The Futile Search.
Damian I decided to take a chance and speak with the doctor taking care of Jax instead of trying to talk to Jax since Eliana and Pearl had told me he was asleep, and I didn't want to disturb him, but I needed to know what was going on.What could he possibly want to warn me about? If Rostella had spilled Preston’s plans then Jax might just be the savior we needed. The doctor, a middle-aged man with a kind face, listened attentively as I explained what we noticed about Jax's situation to him. "He's having trouble speaking, Doctor. Is this normal?" I asked. The doctor nodded, his expression reassuring. "Yes, it's not uncommon for patients to experience speech difficulties after a traumatic event. I'd say give him a week or two to recover, and he should be back to normal." He explained and I nodded reluctantly.A week or two. I didn't have that kind of time at all. If Jax knew something, anything about Preston's plans, I needed to know it now.Preston could strike at any time and I wou
