Chapter 11: Veil of Fear
Rostella I stole a glance at Preston, the man I’d soon be walking down the aisle to– and his fear etched on his face like an engraving on a rock. On my part, tears burned my eyes and my heart sank into my stomach with a heavy thud. My fingers curled up beside me, sweat dripping from my palm like a waterfall and my knees trembled. But I expected Preston to stand up tall and look Damian in the eye. But the only thing he could do was show how weak he was before this stray Reynold dog. Damian had calculated his movements before showing up here and that explains why he’s here on the very day that all the skilled fighters of both families were absent. His men were formidable and clearly outnumbered ours, if this were a good day, I would have had him brought to his knees where I can stomp on that arrogant head of his. “I still remember the days you visited the Reynolds household…” Damian growled coldly and I batted my eye lids, snapping back into the present. Everyone watched in silenc

Rostella “Come…” Preston beckoned softly. His hands reached out to mine and the smile on his face never faded. I forced a smile in return and placed my hand in his. “We only have to lay low and endure this lunatic’s excesses until the month is over. When the War God himself graces this town with his presence, I will take it upon myself to create a bond that even the universe won’t be able to sever.” His demeanor lit up with pride as he gloated in unseen victory. His voice more confident than he was when Damian turned what was supposed to be our wedding into a blood circus. “I do hope you know what you’re doing..” I blurted under my breath. “And your uncle?” I probed, glancing over at the lifeless body behind Preston. The thought of how to break the news to the rest of the family was all my mind dwelt on. “I…uh.. I will arrange for his body to be taken to the morgue and prepared for a befitting burial at the cemetery..” he said, adjusting his tie and sleeves. “Looks like you’re
Chapter 13: Invitation to Blood
DamianFaint cries and audible murmurs echoed behind me as Serena and I stormed out of the hall. Their fears were like a soothing balm on my skin. I reveled in their terror. “Shouldn’t we clear the bodies of her men?” Serena asked and I wanted to object, but then a much better idea crossed my mind immediately. “Instead, stack the bodies out here” I responded sharply and without wasting any more time her subordinates stormed back into the hall. My men cleared the bodies under my command, stacking them like a pile of freshly cut trees outside the hall while I stood and watched. “Walk with me” I said to Serena and we headed towards the car. My driver opened the door and I waited for Serena to go in before I did. I sat inside the car, my head tilted back and my eyes shut, calming my troubled mind for a while. Serena sat beside me, quiet as usual, but I knew she had so many questions to ask. I sat still and watched as the guests rushed out of the hall in a hurry and drove off like th
Chapter 14: The Silver Secret
Rostella I quickly got dressed and headed downstairs immediately towards the courtyard. The cold air brushed harshly against my bare skin and I hugged myself, rubbing my arms to create warmth. Preston held a glass of wine in his hand and a pipe in the other as he paced back and forth, blowing smoke into the air like a tired dragon. I sighed in frustration as I got closer. My pace reduced when I approached him but he didn’t look in my direction. “Any ideas yet?” I asked and sat on the bench. Silence. A deafening one sat between us and made me extremely uncomfortable. I waited for his response but I guess he flipped the coin and I was now the one desperate for an answer from him. “I say we tell them exactly what happened..” he finally said and blew smoke in my face. My brows furrowed. I slowly got up and folded my arms firmly over my chest. “Have you lost your mind Preston? You think they’ll welcome you with open arms?” “No need to worry yourself Rostella. I’ve just been pulling
Chapter 15: Baited
RostellaI glanced at Preston and my pity act quickly dropped. My arms moved away from my mother’s bosom and rested firmly on my hips. “If this Reynold you speak of happened to just stomp Donovan to death, then he isn’t as common as you might think he is..” Preston’s father continued and my suspicions grew deeper. “He did throw him off balance by slamming him against the wall with an empty coffin before he stomped him to death..” Preston argued but his father was clearly not having it. “How long till the War God visits?” He asked and I cleared my throat. “Barely a month. We wrote to him already” I responded. “Preston already made that clear. If we have a month till the War god comes, then we have more than enough time to get rid of this threat for good before he does something outrageous in our family..” Preston’s father probed further. Silence settled in the room and everyone drowned in their own various thoughts. I, for one, couldn’t just ward off the fact that Damian’s right
Chapter 16: The Visit
Damian The first light of dawn crept in through the parted drapes, burning my eyes until I blinked awake. The morning wasn’t warm like it used to, and the harsh wind grazed against my arm. I quickly got down from the bed, stretched a while and headed into the washroom. I heard my door creak open as the cold water ran down my back. Only Serena could waltz into my room like that so I didn’t bother. “Good morning sire!” Her voice echoed through the bathroom door but I didn’t respond. I returned to my room, my towel tied loosely around my waist and my damp hair dripping water down my shoulders. A tray lay on my center table with a teapot and a tea cup resting on it. “Someone sent a request to meet with you today, sire..” Serena cut in and I almost jerked out of my towel. I barely looked over my shoulder as she stood with her head hanging low. “And does this person have an identity?” The teapot hissed as I poured out the contents into the cup. Steam lifted and grazed my face, leaving
Chapter 17: Infiltration
Damian I stood still. The warmth of what we once were trying to crawl its way back into my head, but then I remembered this was Rostella. Her tears soaked my shirt. Her sobs grew intense and her arms tightened around me, but I stood there, unmoved by whatever emotions she poured out. “Let go..” I muttered grimly. Her sobs stopped as quickly as they started and her arms loosened a bit. “What..?” She sniffled, her bloodshot eyes hovering around my face and then I lifted my hands, cupping her tear-soaked face in my palm and she smiled softly. “I said… we both know the only reason you came all the way to this place today is to finish off what you started years ago” I growled but her smile vanished quickly. “Damian no I –” “Keep your explanations and your charade to yourself. You have a wedding to plan and you have one more Reynold to wipe off of the face of the earth. So it’s best if you take this drama home and do something else with your free time.” I warned, letting go of her fac
Chapter 18: Obsession Reborn
RostellaA part of me knew things would never smoothen out between Damian and I after the first trial, but I had to look him in the eye and convince myself that there was absolutely nothing left for me in his heart anymore. I didn’t want to accept that he loathed the very ground I walked on, so I’ll fight every hatred he has for me until it ceases to exist. “Young lady where the hell are you coming from?” Preston shot at me right after I walked through the front door. “It’s barely 11am and you missed breakfast, even the staff didn’t see you leaving!” His angry voice surged through the thick walls of the living room and I could see the servants hiding in corners, paying attention to the show Preston was putting on. I rolled my eyes a sigh escaped my lips. “I had something important that needed my immediate attention. I didn’t want to wake anyone up, that explains why nobody noticed when I left early this morning.” I responded coldly. Preston stared at me long and hard, his eyes wa

Rostella. Preston and I lay in each other’s arms, silence sitting between us like a dam but my mind refused to welcome the silence. My different thoughts created chaos in my head and I was even scared to shut my eyes. But then everywhere stood still, as if the world itself was catching its breath as well. Outside, the skies rumbled softly and soft showers drizzled. I rolled over on the bed, my back facing Preston and his arms tightly wrapped around my waist like he was scared I’d run off while he slept. My mind was blank, but my heart knew exactly why. “Is everything okay?” Preston asked. The sound of his voice scratched something in my head. Low and rough, like the kind of growl a lion gives before it remembers how powerful it is. I shook my head and sighed softly. “Everything isn’t okay Preston” I replied. “Everything can’t be okay when there’s a huge problem out there and we clearly don’t know where to start solving it from..” He sighed lazily, turned to face the ceiling whi
Chapter 20: Beneath the stormy sky.
DamianRain poured down uncontrollably, splattering heavily on my car and I pulled my seat back, watching as Serena carefully carried the body wrapped in a bag out of the Baldwin mansion. The back gate was unguarded, so access was smooth and unnoticed. Even the universe was in our favor because the heavy rain made it easier to hide any suspicious noise. Serena got into my car, drenched to the shoes but that didn’t matter. “It’s done” she reported. “Make sure she stays alive and fed. She can’t have any reason to go back into that house no matter what” I ordered and she nodded. The scratches on her temple showed how much the servant struggled before she was subdued. “Now get her name, everything there is to know about her before you resume her post and get into action..” my words were final and she merely nodded. I handed her a bundle of cash and she stared at my hands for a while, silence washing over her. “Sire, what for?” Serena probed. “I’m only doing what must be done. My loy
