Chapter 31
Damian “To what do I owe this visit from the dead, Damian Reynolds..” servants poured some wine into the cup in front of me while others filed in with trays of meals I hadn’t seen or even tasted in years. “Isn’t this too much for one person?” I muttered, throwing in a handful of cherries into my mouth. Xavier stared at me blankly, his eyes sizing me up and down with questions written all over his face. I didn’t tell him about my disappearance and I’m certain he still has no idea about Rostella’s betrayal or the fact that she’s getting married to Preston. “Let’s take a walk.. the food was just a means of showing you that you’re welcome here anytime.” Xavier explained. “But we need to talk and this setting isn’t conducive enough.” I followed him towards the east wing and he led the way into a large room. The doors stood tall, like a nephilim lived here. Shelves clung to the walls, each compartment touching the roof. Books hung on every part of it and the room smelled of old pages
Chapter 32
Damian “Save yourself Damian!” “Damian run!”“Mother…!” My eyes shot open. Beads of sweat rolled down my temple and heart throbbed like it was begging to jump out of my skin. These nightmares from the night of that massacre happen to be the only battle I can’t win. No matter how many physicians and therapists I have visited, I still can’t find a solution to my predicament. The early hours of the morning hummed with serenity. Cold air brushed against my bare chest as I got down from my bed and walked over to my balcony for some fresh air. I checked my phone for any updates but the screen was blank. There was no need going back to bed because I couldn’t sleep anymore, so I freshened up and went downstairs to my study. Dust and ink greeted me as I pushed the door open and picked up a random book to read. The last thing I remembered was flipping through the old pages of the book and next think I knew, sun rays burned through the curtains and fell on my face. “Shit..” I cursed under
Chapter 33
DamianThe sun retired, scattering crimson shades all over the sky. Cold air brushed against my skin as I stood in my driveway, watching Xavier leave in one of my cars. WAR GOD was boldly imprinted on the car plate, its aura seething through every part of the car. “Sire, your car is ready.” My driver announced. “Get some rest.” I ordered. “I’ll drive” I walked over to my car and got in. The engine revved and I drove off, almost exceeding the speed limit. On my way, I stopped by a jewelry store to pick something up. The jeweler looked up at me when I walked in, her eyes glimmering and reflecting the crystals displayed on her counter. “Good evening Mr. Reynolds..” she greeted shyly, her fingers tangling with her hair. “Your order is ready” I nodded and handed her my card. “Add a hundred percent tip to the bill.” I ordered. Her face flushed with excitement as she pressed the buttons and scanned my card. I watched her pack the order and handed it over to me like it was an egg. “T
Chapter 34
Damian“Reynolds!” Xavier’s hoarse voice tore through the young morning while I sat in my study with my legs crossed over my desk. “Where’s he?” I heard him ask whoever he met outside until he found me in the study. The hinges creaked and he pained open the door, letting himself in. “Reynolds, why did you leave last night?” He asked, voice laced with anger. “I had to leave Xavier, it was an emergency..” I replied, still flipping through the book in my head. “Those people insisted I stayed back and you won’t believe what I went through..” he grunted, pulling out a chair to sit down. “How bad could it have been?”Xavier took a deep breath and cleared his throat, my eyes were still buried inside my book. “First of all, here’s your ring..” he glided the ring towards me on the table. “Now, I don’t understand what issues you might have with those lunatics but they’re out to kill you..” I rolled my eyes and flipped a page over. “Tell me something I don’t know Xavier..” I retorted. Rostella. I woke up to a throbbing head, sore eyes and heavy legs. As I tried to sit up on my bed, my head throbbed even more. I rubbed my eyes and tapped around my bed in search of my phone. Just then, the door creaked open and Preston walked in with one of the maids. “You’re finally awake…” he muttered and I lifted my brows. “I was just about calling the doctor.” “What the hell are you talking about?” I snorted, holding my head for support because it felt like it wanted to fall off. “Honey you returned from wherever it was you went to, walked right past everyone in the living room and came up here to sleep..” he explained. I looked down at my clothes, they didn’t look like that of someone who just returned from a supposed outing and just dropped into her bed. “Preston I’m not sure I’ve left the house today, what are you saying? It’s still morning. Where could I have gone in the night?”Preston exchanged glances with the maid and then slowly walked over to my side, placing his

Damian“Do you think it worked?” Xavier asked as I walked him to his car. “It has never not worked, so I’m certain it won’t be any different with Rostella” I replied. “Look..” Xavier paused and turned to face me. “I didn’t mean to blow things like this. If I had known she could easily come into any room, especially yours, I would have probably stayed somewhere more discreet..” I patted his shoulder and continued walking. “It’s not your fault Xavier. I also had no idea she could easily go into any room. This one’s on her, so she’ll pay for it by not having any memory of anything that happened.”Xavier got in his car and I watched his car roll up dust as he drove off. I stared into empty air for a while and let out a heavy sigh. Who knows what would have happened if Rostella could remember seeing the supposed war god lounging in my room. My phone buzzed and when I looked, it was a message from Preston. I didn’t bother going through it anyway so I put my phone back into my pocket an

Damian“I’ll pick you up in three hours, if that’s okay with you..” I muttered as I held the door to leave. Mila nodded, a soft smile plastered on her face. “I’ll be ready in four. You’ll have to wait..” she responded softly. My phone buzzed in my pocket and I knew it was from Serena because of the distinct tone I set out for her. “That won’t be a problem. My regards to your father, I’ll stop by some other time just to see him..” I said and left immediately. As I walked to my car, I took out my phone and dialed the number again. “Sire..” Serena’s voice rang through the other end of the line like there was an emergency. “I told you these people were on to me!” I took a deep breath, pinching the space between my brows as I sank into the driver’s seat. “Serena what has happened now?” “I’m just coming out of Rostella’s room and you won’t believe why she summoned me. She called me to tell me that she wanted to increase my pay and give me a promotion. At first I was surprised because
Chapter 38
DamianI silently prayed not to see Rostella lounging in my living room as I drove back home. There was tension in the car, I honestly have no idea why. I don’t owe Mila any explanations, nor do I have to worry about how she would react if we meet Rostella in my house. But for some unexplainable reason, I feel obligated to do so. “You have questions to ask..” I started, breaking the deafening silence. Mila glanced at me, and then back at her phone screen. I didn’t pay attention to what she was looking at but I knew she didn’t want to continue the conversation. Finally, she put her phone away and looked up at me with a smile on her face. Even a blind man would know how forced the smile was.“Mr. Reynolds, you owe me no explanations, nor do you have to ask me if I have questions for you. This isn’t what you might think it is…”“What do you think I think it is?”She stopped talking and I could see her pursed lips through the corner of my eyes. “I have no idea, but you get my point a
Chapter 39
Damian As the weather cleared up and I packed up the puzzle pieces we failed to fix, Mila on the other hand lay on the bench, fast asleep. I finished packing up and shoved the box under the table before going over to where Mila lay. The sunroom was freezing at this point and the way she curled up like a shrimp, I could tell she was shivering in her dreams. “Mila..” I called out softly, tapping her shoulder gently but she wouldn’t budge. She just turned around, shoving her hair in my face. “Rude..” I grunted as I lifted her off the bench and carried her inside. Her arms wrapped around my neck for balance while she buried her face in my chest. Everyone had gone to bed already when I walked into the main house so instead of going into the guest room, I headed upstairs. “Damian..” she muttered, eyes still closed. “I’m starving..” “No you’re not honey, you’re drunk.” I cut in. I walked down the east wing and stopped in front of the room right beside mine. Nobody has ever been
Chapter 40
Rostella I got tired of waiting around and wondering if Damian was okay when he wouldn’t even return any of my texts. I didn’t want to look thirsty and run after him even when he clearly won’t speak to me… But then what if he’s in trouble or in a bad state and can’t use his phone so he can’t reach me? This might be one of the very few chances I get to show him how much I care about him despite our differences. As I dressed up in front of the mirror, Preston walked into the room holding a gift box in his hand. “Happy birthday my love..” Preston said sweetly. My eyes watered immediately because I even forgot my own birthday. I was just too engrossed in matters concerning Damian, I almost forgot to take care of myself the way I should. “Thank you so much baby..” I whispered, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck as tears rolled down my cheeks. “Are you going somewhere?” Preston asked and I stared at the gloss in my hand. Was this even necessary? Damian will definitely not
