Chapter 21. Giant Zombies
Three more zombies had heard the noise and were slowly shambling toward him. Devon decided to try a different approach. He ran straight at the first zombie, dodging under its grasping arms, and placed his palm directly on its decaying chest. This time, he activated Minor Life Drain. The sensation was totally different from the cold of the Siphon. This felt warm. Hot even. The zombie’s life force flowed into him like a shot of liquid fire.[Minor Life Drain activated][HP restored: +7][ME restored: 0 (FULL)][Duration: 3 seconds]Devon’s minor cuts from yesterday tingled as they healed even faster. The zombie collapsed, its body rapidly shriveling as if decades of decay had been compressed into seconds.“Wow, that’s super effective,” Devon whispered, pulling his hand away. “But damn, it feels weird.”The remaining two zombies converged on him from two sides. Devon waited until the very last possible second, then triggered Ephemeral Shift. His world went mute and gray. The zombies’ slo
Chapter 22. Too Late
Raline stared at her brother, her face was pale but looked determined. “So, what do we do…?”Devon gripped the edge of the rooftop wall hard, the fear coiling tightly in his chest. He tried to push his Death Sight as far as it would go, straining to see the shelter in the distance.Nothing. He couldn’t see anything, just the usual two hundred meter radius around him. The shelter was beyond that range, maybe a kilometer away, maybe more. Too far for his supernatural vision to reach, making him feel agonizingly useless. Even the giants and the hordes were now out of his reach.“I can’t see them,” he admitted quietly. “They’re outside my range.”He took the binoculars from his sister, and tried to find the shelter Raline talked about. Through the lenses, he could barely make out the distant building, the tiny figures of people moving around it. Then he shifted where the massive shapes approached them.“How far is that shelter, exactly?” Devon asked, already knowing the answer wouldn’t be
Chapter 23. Fighting One of the Giant Zombie
Devon’s Death Sight showed him the truth clearly. Out of more than fifty human auras that he saw as soon as the shelter entered his range, only about fifteen were left. And those few remaining people looked like dying lightbulbs, dying even while he stood there watching. They were too late. They had run as fast as they could, and they were still too late. But then, a young soldier burst out of a side door, running blindly. He didn’t see the three zombies stumbling toward him until they were basically on him. Devon acted without thinking, covering the distance in seconds and slicing down all three of them bedore they could reach the young guy.The soldier just stared at him in shock. “W-What…”“Go! Run!” Devon grabbed his arm. “Get away from here, just run!”“But the others…”“Are dead or dying and you will be if you don’t go!” Devon said harshly. “Get the fuck outta here! MOVE!”The soldier stumbled away with tears streaming down his face.Devon saw seven more people were fleeing now
Chapter 24. Only Eight from Fifty Survivors
Devon dove to the ground, the massive rubble the size of a car flew right over his head and crashed into a building behind him. The impact rattled the entire road.‘Damn it. This thing is smart…’The giant was advancing again toward him, acting much more carefully this time. It had learned that Devon could hurt it, and he was also fast.It was adjusting its attack strategy. But Devon had to get out of here now. Staying here any longer even for a second would just get him killed. He had bought the survivors enough time.He turned around and ran, using every bit of his superhuman speed. The giant chased after him, but it had definitely slowed down, since the drain on its leg was messing with its movement.Devon cut around a corner, then another, putting distance between himself and the monster. His Death Sight showed the giant black aura was falling behind, unable to keep pace.He didn’t stop running until he was six blocks away, where he dove into an alley and leaned against a wall, ga
Chapter 25. Human Ego (I)
The dawn came with the sun struggling hard to penetrate through the heavy fog that had settled over this dead city. Devon hadn’t managed to get any sleep, staying up on watch the entire night. The giants, with their dark auras, had been sneaking around the streets outside his two hundred meter Sight range, only popping into his range occasionally until about three in the morning, when they finally moved away to the other side of the city. They were probably off hunting for more people. That realization made Devon clenched his jaw in frustration. On the other side of where Devon was guarding, the few survivors were beginning to stir and wake up from their sleep. He could hear their quiet movements, hushed conversations, and someone softly sobbing to themselves in the corner.Raline walked up to him, holding two cups of instant coffee in her hands. She looked completely drained, with dark circles under her eyes, but she managed to force a small smile.“You didn’t sleep at all, did you?
Chapter 26. Human Ego (II)
Then a new voice joined the conversation. “She's right, you know.”Williams came walking over towards them, his arm neatly wrapped up in bandage by Raline. Even though he looked completely exhausted and traumatized from everything they had been through, he still held himself like a soldier.“Sir…” Lee greeted, giving him a quick salute.“At ease, Private,” Williams replied, managing a tired smile for her. “We should ditch the whole military protocols in this apocalypse.”He turned to Devon. “She has a point. Those giants are a huge threat to everyone who even managed to survive from regular zombies. We should warn others. Or better yet, we need to eliminate the threat.”“You saw what it did,” Devon shot back, the irritation of Lee pushing him to fight those giants clearly showing on his face. “How the hell are we supposed to eliminate something… a few somethings… like those?”“With proper planning,” Williams said, his voice now took that annoying lecturing tone. “Look. I've fought war
Chapter 27. The Second Meeting
Devon found himself in that familiar void. It was dark and blindingly bright at the same time, totally impossible to describe. It was the paradox space where he had first met Anubis. But this time, he wasn’t tied down by the dark tendrils. He just stood there freely in the emptiness, fully aware of his actual body but also somehow separated from it.“Devon Adams Lambert.”The voice boomed out from every direction and yet nowhere at all. Devon turned around to see Anubis materializing from the darkness. He was impossibly tall, a massive jackal headed figure who was literally the god of death.“My Lord,” Devon said, inclining his head down respectfully.“Your corruption rises.” Anubis’s voice held no emotion, just stating a fact. “You have been using my power extensively.”“I had to… People were dying everywhere. I couldn’t just…”“I did not grant you power so you could be reckless.” The god’s eyes with those unsettling vertical pupils, stared on Devon with uncomfortable intensity. “You
Chapter 28. Trust Issue
Devon felt totally exposed, like the god could see everything he was thinking. “It’s a huge problem for everyone left in the city. Someone needs to…”Anubis raised a hand right before Devon could keep talking and protesting. “Someone. Not necessarily you.”They both went silent. Anubis's word was a fact, and Devon knew he couldn’t fight those giants by himself. Honestly, he felt like he should have been strong enough to kill those creatures without needing any help.“Then what am I supposed to do? Just let it roam free around and do whatever it wants?”“Be smart about it. You cannot kill the giants directly. You can trap it or weaken it. You can protect other people without engaging in direct confrontation that will get you killed,” The god said, his voice turned into a teaching tone. That… actually made sense. Devon had only been thinking in terms of “kill or die trying,” but Anubis was right, and there were other options he could make."How would I weaken something that big?” he mum
Chapter 29. Keeping Secret
When they were finally alone in the corner, Raline looked at her brother. “Did you seriously have to be such an asshole?”“Yeah, I did,” Devon said. He flopped back onto his mattress, feeling drained and exhausted again. Raline grabbed the water bottle, handed it to him, and he took a slow sip.“Sis, you heard what they were saying earlier. Williams and Lee are trying to go hunt those gigantic zombies. They’re going to do something stupid and get themselves killed,” he whispered, setting the water bottle down next to him.“So what? That’s their choice,” Raline said, tilting her head at him a little bit.Devon shook his head, looking serious. “I know I'll end up having to bail their asses out when their whole plan goes sideways. I'm not about to risk my life, or even worse, yours, all because they want to play hero.”Raline stayed quiet for a second, then leaned in closer to him. “So what's the actual plan, though? What did Anubis really tell you about that?”Devon glanced around secre
