Chapter 41. Blood Contract
The old stadium stood tall against the blood red moon, its broken walls stretching long shadows across the grass field. Devon and Raline walked up carefully, with Bony following behind them without a sound.Devon’s Death Sight showed Valdris’s aura glowing and waiting right in the middle of the field, along with roughly twenty zombie guards placed all around the perimeter.“Damn, he brought backup,” Devon muttered.“So did you,” Raline said, nodding toward Bony. They slipped through a collapsed section of wall. Valdris was standing on the fifty yard line, its crimson armor shining in the moonlight.“You brought your sister with you,” Valdris noticed. “Sentimental much.”“Nah, practical. She’s my main strategist,” Devon corrected. He stepped forward, Caldemor drawn but not raised, and said, “Let’s get straight to the terms of the deal.”“Direct as ever. I appreciate that,” Valdris replied. It made a hand motion, and one of the zombies shuffled over with a thick leather bound book.“Thi
Chapter 42. Demonic Gossip
“Pathetic,” the death knight muttered, sounding disgusted. “At this rate, half of them will die within the first hour.”“Then teach them,” Devon shot back. “That’s the whole damn point of this alliance.”Valdris stared at him for a moment, then nodded, admitting the point. “Fair enough. Very well.”The death knight stepped onto the field. “Stop! All of you, stop!”Everyone froze immediately.“You’re treating them like people, and they’re not. They’re threats to be eliminated.” Valdris grabbed one of the zombie’s heads and twisted it clean off with no effort whatsoever. “You see? No second thought, no hesitation. Just get the job done.”Valdris made them practise for hours. Stab, twist, pull the weapon out. Aim for weak spots. Use technique and leverage instead of strength. Don’t overthink, just react and act.Slowly, and with a lot of pain and exhaustion, the civilians started to improve. Meanwhile, Devon trained separately with Valdris in hand on hand combat.“Your sword work is ade
Chapter 43. Supreme Politics
“What else did you hear?” Devon pressed the death knight. “What other details did you pick up?”“The tournament has multiple arcs, each more difficult than the last. The final round is maybe ten or twenty groups competing for the ultimate prize.”Valdris paused. “And the prize… that’s where the rumors become completely contradictory.”“In what way?” Devon asked.“Some devils claim the winner becomes a god. Others say they gain immortality. Others say god level power back in their original world.” Valdris shook its head. “The gods are keeping that secret even from the devils, saying they will inform the devils when the time comes. Whatever the true prize is, it’s significant enough that they don’t want anyone to know about it.”Williams stood up, his soldier mode returning. “So we’re going into this with incomplete intelligence from unreliable sources. Not ideal, but better than nothing.”“Way better,” Valdris agreed. “Most champions will know zero.”“What about the other champions?” L
Chapter 44. Survival Course
Ilya glanced at him, her expression showing she didn’t believe him. But then her gaze landed on Valdris, and she went pale, the color draining from her face.“Is that… is that a Death Knight?”“Yeah, he’s on our side,” Devon said, walking over to them. “It’s complicated.”Valdris studied the newcomers with those empty eye sockets, his expression unreadable under the skull helmet. “So these are survivors from the shelter we discussed?”“Some of them,” Devon confirmed.“They’re starving and mentally frayed,” Valdris observed, tilting its skull helmet slightly. “But they’ve fought before. We can work with that.”Ilya’s face flushed instantly with anger and defensive instinct. “Work with us? Who the hell do you think you are?”“Someone who can keep you breathing through the coming tournament,” Valdris replied flatly, totally unfazed. “Six days until the elimination round. Join us and train, or survive alone and die. Choose.”“A tournament?” Ilya looked between Devon, Lee, and the death kn
Chapter 45. The Night Before
Day five shifted focus entirely to survival training, and Valdris proved it understood strategy better than any human commander."In the arena, points matter more than kills," the death knight lectured sternly. "Strategic locations, resources, survival time. All of these generate points we need. Fighting is important, but it's not the ultimate goal."Valdris taught them how to identify valuable items at a quick glance, how to secure defensible positions, and how to tell when a fight was worth the risk versus when to bail."Every fight costs you energy and risks injury or death," Valdris emphasized, its skull helmet turning to look at each person. "Fight smart, not brave. Dead heroes don't earn points for their team. Living cowards who make it to the end do.""That's kind of depressing," Robert muttered."That's reality," Valdris shot back instantly. "Glory is for idiots who die early. Survival is for winners who adapt."Meanwhile, Raline had organized the medical team, including the n
Chapter 46. Promises
Devon found Raline sitting alone on the stadium steps, staring up at the moon."Hey," he said gently as he sat beside her. "You okay?""No," she said quietly. "I'm scared out of my mind.""Yeah. Me too, honestly."For a moment they just sat together, just quietly existing side by side."Dev... promise me something," Raline said finally, her voice small and quiet."Depends on what it is.""If it comes down to me or winning the round... you have to choose winning."Devon's head snapped toward her in disbelief. "What? Hell no.""Dev, just listen~""No, you listen. I'm not sacrificing you. Ever. You're all I've got left," Devon said firmly."And that's exactly the problem,” she whispered, tears starting to form in her eyes. "I'll be in the back. But if something happens, if choosing me puts the whole group at risk… you need to let me go.”She took a shaky breath. "The tournament matters more than any one person. Even me.""Bullshit.""Dev—""No. Fuck that thought, it's not gonna happen!"
Chapter 47. The Elimination Round Began
Midnight arrived with a sudden supernatural fanfare that jolted reality.Devon jolted awake, his Death Sight immediately flaring red hot. All around the stadium, others were stirring instantly, feeling the exact same disturbance in reality. The moon reached its zenith, and suddenly the sky itself seemed to crack wide open.A massive white panel materialized in the air above the stadium, visible to every person in the entire world. Black text burned across it in letters ten feet tall.[FIRST ELIMINATION ROUND COMMENCING][All registered champions and groups will be transported in 60 seconds][Prepare yourselves][Survival threshold: Top 90% of groups advance][Bottom 10% will be eliminated - PERMANENTLY][Duration: 72 hours][Good luck]"Holy shit," someone breathed out, the sound choked with terror. "It's really happening."The stadium erupted into controlled chaos. People were grabbing weapons, frantically checking supply packs, saying last minute prayers or goodbyes to each other.D
Chapter 48. Red Flare
Devon’s Sight spotted several distant auras fading rapidly to nothing. He could guess that those were the auras of the eliminated ones, gone for good. There was no time to waste even a single second. He checked his equipment quickly. Caldemor was still secured right at his hip, that was one huge relief. His supply pack also survived the chaotic transport. His ME was full, and his corruption at zero.‘I guess I'm ready…’Devon then pushed his enhanced Death Sight to one kilometer of its maximum range in all directions. The incoming information flooded his mind immediately. He found three weak zombies to the north within two hundred meters, but no human auras in that direction. A cluster of five human enemy auras he could see heading southeast. Another ten to the west.Dozens of scattered auras, both living and undead, many of them he couldn't recognize, were visible. Some were clearly fighting, others were running. But there were three strong signatures that he saw burning like miniatu
Chapter 49. Fire And Shadow
But as the enemy group got closer, Devon saw more details about their auras. They weren't just random humans. One of them had an aura that felt like a divine power. A champion, probably. It wasn't as bright as the S rank ones, but he knew this one perhaps at his level, even though a little bit higher.Devon now was strong. But fighting a champion with his or she, he wasn't sure, along with its supporters by himself, was too risky.‘I need backup. Where the fuck is Valdris when I actually need that bastard?’ he cursed the death knight in his mind. The enemy group was closing fast now. Devon tightened his grip on Caldemor, breathing steadily.“Let's see what you've got,” Devon muttered, his eyes locked into the approaching auras.Five figures emerged from the ruined streets, just like his Sight had shown. They looked like a normal human in messy armour and carrying weapons. But the fifth aura was the one he should avoid. She was tall, maybe six feet, with armour that looked like it was
Chapter 50. Negotiating with Fire
The spear woman lunged at Devon first, launching a swift attack. He easily sidestepped the move, letting his Caldemor deflect her thrust away. The axe guy didn't wait. He immediately came from the opposite side. The axe whistled dangerously close to Devon's head. He ducked beneath the weapon, actually feeling the rush of air as it passed, and came up with an elbow delivered straight to the axe guy’s stomach. The man instantly doubled over, wheezing loudly in pain. The spear woman quickly adjusted her attack, thrusting the spear again. Devon caught the spear shaft with his free hand, using the grip to yank her completely off balance, and then brought Caldemor’s pommel down on the back of her head. She dropped out cold to the floor.Axe guy was recovering, lifting his weapon for another swing. But Devon didn't give him the chance to attack. He manifested Grave Touch again and had it grab the guy firmly from behind, lifting him off his feet.“What the~?!” the axe guy yelled in confusion
