Chapter 21
The question dropped like a bomb on the silent hall. Hushed murmurs, whispers, apparent gossip immediately replaced the earlier quiet anticipation of the hall.Melissa's hand flew up to her mouth, her eyes wide in shock. Scam? She knew the Black family. They were immensely wealthy, the sort of wealth that had convinced her to cheat on Coulter and leave him behind. She turned slowly, agonizingly towards Coulter. He was watching the spectacle unfold, his face a neutral mask, but his eyes carrying a certain glimpse of something.Amusement? Satisfaction?Melissa felt something in her harden. Why did everything go wrong for them whenever Coulter showed up? It was almost like he was doing something to sabotage them at every step. Her eyes widened even more at the accusation that settled slowly in her mind. The bastard."S... Scam?" Caleb finally said, his eyes wide. "I am a member of the Black family. We have the sort of old money that could buy off this entire auction pieces. The only reas
Chapter 22
"Miss Amelia Nate, please come forward and sign the documents for the X shares."Amelia turned to Coulter, who gave a small smile, nodding her towards the now open podium, with Caleb making a slow exit away from the podium. She stood up, her eyes wide with disbelief. Slowly, she turned towards Coulter, then sat back, her chest slightly heaving. "No. I... I can't go alone."Coulter tilted his head, his brows slightly furrowed in question. She leaned further, her fingers seeking his."Come with me," she said again, standing up. Coulter swallowed hard, then nodded slowly, something heavy settling in his chest. Throughout all of Melissa's successes, all of which he had engineered, she had never held his hand on the podium. Never told him she wanted him there. Not even once. And now there was a strange woman, whom he had only helped regain the things that his devotion to Melissa had caused her to lose, immediately holding his hand to accept the very first success of her career. It was al
Chapter 23
The ride home was silent, with Coulter watching the city lights pass by, his eyes thin with a numbness he had gotten accustomed to in all his years of being married to Melissa. Amelia was a lot more pensive, her eyes falling occasionally towards the torn material that Coulter was holding up, his hand resting on his chest. She clutched her purse tighter, the signed auction papers sitting in the space between them. She had given the designated driver the penthouse address, and Coulter hadn't protested. It seemed, at the very least, he was allowing her to do this one thing. They got to the hotel, and Coulter got off, then went around, just as Amelia grabbed her purse and the papers. He opened the door before she could, his other hand still holding the torn shirt, the expression in his eyes unreadable. She gave a small smile, then walked out of the car. With renewed conviction, she led the way to the elevator, and they settled into comfortable silence as they went up. The eleva

Coulter slowly stepped out of the bath, then wrapped a towel around his waist before walking down to the main room. The room he had given Amelia had been plain, a round bed, a walk im closet, impersonal, cold. This room was lived in. It was warm, fluffy divets on the slightly rumpled bed, a single rose resting on the dresser, a hair pin next to it. Amelia's scent hung in the air.The door slowly opened, and he turned, his brows slightly furrowing. Amelia stopped by the half open door, her eyes wide."I didn't know you were out already. I wanted to drop this so you can eat and sleep after."Coulter nodded. "Come in."Amelia hesitated for a long moment before she walked in, letting the door close behind her. Coulter watched her keenly as she dropped a plate of food, water, and some cut fruits on the bed, then straightened, her eyes fixed on his face."You should eat."She turned away."You did good with this room," Coulter said, breaking his withdrawal for the first time tonight. She tu
Chapter 25
Caleb arrived at the Martinez pension just as the sun had settled above the horizons. The last time he had seen or even spoken to Melissa and Madam Gabriella was last night, right before Melissa was kicked out of the auction. He swallowed hard, packing his car right in front before grabbing the papers. He could still see the disappointment in Melissa's eyes when he had lost both the necklace and the shares, and he knew he was on a very tight rope.He looked down at the papers. These were his very last chance, and he had to use it well. To the very best of his ability. He rang the doorbell, and the housekeeper, an elderly woman named Elaine, opened it. She scanned him warily, then adjusted, her body blocking the small crack of the open door."Madam doesn't want to see you."Caleb's eyes widened. "No, wait. Tell her I absolutely have to talk to her. Please. Tell her it is important."Elaine sighed, then started to shake her head when Madam Gabriella's voice came from above."Who is ther

"The shares have been successfully trasferred to Miss Amelia, sir," Ian said, his eyes fixed on Coulter. Coulter was leaning back on his chair, slightly moving, his eyes fixed on nothing in front of him.His mind was distant, etched far away between the shaky breaths of a kiss that, in hindsight, was probably as inevitable as it was wrong. He closed his eyes slowly, his fingers reaching for the pen, his lips slightly parted. He wasn't so sure he currently had the space for Amelia. That in the long run she wouldn't just be someone who had come in right after Melissa exited. Not like he cared about Melissa, but that he cared about himself. About his heart, his possessions."Are you worried about Miss Amelia?" Ian asked, his voice low as he moved further. The sound of her name spoken in this very moment made his breath hitch, and he leaned forward slowly, his brows drawn. "Do you... perhaps think I am ready, Ian? That this space next to me is just space and not the ghost of my ex wife
Chapter 27
The ride back to the Martinez penthouse was an affair of planning and laughter. By the time Caleb parked in front of the penthouse, Melissa and Madam Gabriella had a full plan. The ball would be scheduled for next week. There would be a red carpet, an invitation only gala. Melissa would shop for dresses. Four of them that would span all four hours of the gala. They have decided on inviting Coulter and Amelia, and also, the most humiliating experience of the year. It would be beautiful. Epic. Talk of the year.Caleb left the penthouse, as Melissa settled on the couch, her eyes turning to Madam Gabriella."I can't believe it," she said, laughing. "I can't believe that I am finally the owner of that villa."Madam Gabriella gave a small smile. "I know. I know, right? It is surreal. Epic! Imagine the face of that bastard when he comes there, seeing you own a house that he will never be able to afford. He and that slut!"Melissa's eyes darkened with revenge. "I started to doubt Caleb a litt
Chapter 28
Amelia leaned against the bathroom sink, her eyes meeting those staring right back in the mirror. The last time she had seen her mother was years ago when she ran away from home and never looked back. Now, all of a sudden.... how did she even get her number? Why did she suddenly contact her now? How did she know to reach out now that she had gotten everything she had worked hard for?She closed her eyes, her chest heaving. No. This is exactly what she wants. For Amelia to break down. To be scared of her. She wouldn't allow that. She leaned away from the sink, a resolve taking hold in her mind. Not anymore. She had spent yeaes of her life terrified of the very mother who should have protected her. Protected her from her own choice or a husband, from thevhsrsh realities of life, but the only thing Amelia ended up needing protection from was her very own mother. She turned and walked away from the sink, determined to leave the ghost of her mother behind. She grabbed her phone that was st
Chapter 29
Coulter walked into the large private underground garage. It was a sprawling space filled with nothing but the toys he had amassed out of sheer boredom, randomg from state of the art motorcycles to sport cars, F1 cars that he had paid fortunes for, and even a smal carrier. It was the perfect haven. He walked through the massive space, toll he found the car he was looking for. It was a simple but elegant car that screamed of comfort, but not quite the sort of wealth that a CEO like Amelia would be bought by. The keys were sitting on the showcase board, and he grabbed it and opened the car.The ride to the Sun Hotels was quiet, and he parked in front of the building, then got down. He was wearing a simple black shirt on tailored trousers, his glasses still perched on his nose. His sleeves were rolled up, the first two buttons of his shirt opened, and his shoes gleamed in the light. He hadn't had the time to change them, but he hoped that Amelia wouldn't see the red colour underneath.H
Chapter 30
Amelia returned in a pretty knee-length sun dress, with tiny straps as sleeves, that tied on her shoulders in pretty bows. Her hair was tied up in a beautiful ponytail, a few strands framing her face.Coulter broke into a warm smile as she emerged, then gave a small twirl. "Good?"He immediately nodded, his smile brightening as he took her in. "Beautiful."She laughed, a rich, truly happy sound, then covered the distance to him. "The flowers fit well in the vases."Coulter had noticed. The vase in the sitting room, and the one on the kitchen counter too. He nodded. "Glad it does. Shall we go?"She nodded. "Can we stop by somewhere? I want to get something."His brows slightly furrowed, but he nodded, taking her hand. They both went downstairs, and straight to the parked car. Coulter opened the door for her, and she slipped into the passenger seat, fixing her dress and her hair. He entered the driver’s seat next to her, then turned. "Where do I drive us to, Ma'am?"She broke into a la
