31. New Quirk Unlocked
Every time Kael closed his eyes, the sound came back to him far more often than he wanted to admit. The sickening… wet crunch. It was that sound alone like a hammer meeting bone again and again. Kael sat with his back pressed against the van’s cold interior and his knees pulled to his chest, staring at nothing in particular. The road hummed beneath them as they drove, and the constant vibration only served to make him nauseous. His hands wouldn’t stop shaking. No matter how hard he clenched them into fists, the tremors stayed. And worst of all, he kept seeing the boy’s face. It wasn’t the monster’s face that haunted him for they were so vastly different that he had come to see them as separate beings entirely. What lingered instead was the boy’s face: the one he had seen, spoken to, and spent time with during that quiet journey. One of the few he had come to regard as familiar. Are monsters… scared of fire? The boy’s question returned to him without warning, and it struck h
32. The First Duel
“Would you look at that,” Nervanine said softly. “Still standing, I see.” She smiled as the black water beneath her feet began to move, climbing up her legs and wrapping around her like a living thing answering its master. She glanced at Tucker. “Deal with these low-lives here,” she said calmly. “I’ll take care of the others.” Before anyone could react, her body sank into the water and in the next instant, she was gone, vanishing into the darkness where the girl, Lance, and Decker had been dragged. “Where did she—” Kael stopped himself. He didn't need to finish the thought. He got the strange sense that she disappeared to finish off the rest of the group. He should have been worried but strangely, he wasn't. They had the girl with them, and that only served to reassure him. As reckless and irritating as she could be, she was equally as strong. At least, strong enough to keep others safe. That thought alone steadied his breathing, even if only a little. He didn't have time to
33. Predator and Prey
The girl stayed calm, her eyes fixed on Nervanine as the water shaped itself into the monster before her. “You’re surprisingly quiet,” Nervanine said. “Most people would be screaming by now.” Her voice echoed from everywhere at once. And no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t block it out. The girl clenched her jaw and endured instead, knowing that even the smallest reaction could give her enemy an opening. Like an angry tiger staring down a rather confident gazelle, the girl wished the creature knew exactly what she thought of her in that moment. If she weren’t trapped beneath the black, murky water, barely holding her breath, she would have told the creature exactly what she thought of her. Instead, and with a fierce scowl, she thrust her blade forward, trying to strike Nervanine down. The blade met nothing but water. Nervanine had vanished, as if she’d known the attack was coming before the girl even moved. The girl wasn’t surprised in the slightest. Like the Domains
34. Superior Force
“Just where do you get off mouthing off to your superior?” The words stayed in Nervanine’s head and she gritted her teeth in anger. The sheer audacity of a human speaking to her like that was nothing short of unbearable. Then she remembered what came next. With a single swing of her blade, the girl had forced them out of the Domain with such ease it should not have been possible otherwise. No human should possess that level of power. And that thought unsettled her. Was the girl truly human? Nervanine wondered. And though she had no answer, all she could was dwell on that which she'd witnessed. But one detail stood out more than the rest. The girl’s eyes had glowed green. And that terrified her. Then she remembered what Tucker had said back when they still believed themselves hunters stalking their prey. She recalled how tense he became, how he clutched his nose after catching a scent of power so overwhelming it nearly crushed him. 'That power…' the thought made her uneas
35. Blood on the Forest Floor
The girl stood still, watching the inferno consume the creature without so much as flinching. When nothing remained but smoldering ash, she felt a thin trail of blood slide down the cut on her cheek and quickly wiped it away. While the wound healed on its own, the idea of it annoyed her. She couldn’t stand the thought being anything less than perfect. “Can’t believe I let her sorry ass get the drop on me,” she muttered, staring at the blood staining her hand. Most people trapped in a world this vile worried about the dangers lurking around every corner, and how to best survive them. The girl didn’t. All she cared about was how she was perceived and that included her appearance. She’d worked too hard to maintain that kind of perfection to ever allow anyone to stain it. Even though the wound had already healed, the cut on her cheek still irritated her that someone had dared to blemish her beauty. That was when she heard coughing a few meters away. She turned to see Decker dragg
36. Do‑Over
Tucker leapt toward him with a punch that'd put the fear of God into any man. Desperate, Kael raised his guard, but the force still drove him straight into the ground. What he wasn't expecting was the follow-up kick that came after. Such agility shouldn’t have been possible for a man his size and built like a brick wall, but the impossible was the norm in this land. Kael was sent skidding across the stones, rolling helplessly. An attack of Anima-powered cuts and slashes came seconds later, driving Kael back every inch until he slammed into a tree hard enough to make his spine shatter. All he could do was crumple uselessly to the ground. Tucker was exceptional in every sense of the word. He was strong and agile, and his defenses were so absurdly high, it felt impossible to deal so much as a scratch on him. Kael's stats told the story. With a strength of 6, an agility of 3, an endurance of 5 and a lackluster speed of non… what chance did someone like that have against a man with be
37. The Boy Who Struck Back
For a moment, Tucker was silent. “Huh?” Even he looked confused. “I finally figured out what made me sick all those times,” Kael said. His voice was weak, but he forced the words out anyway. “As much as it pains me to admit… I wasn’t avoiding a fight by keeping my head down. I was afraid. Back then… and even now.” He took one step forward, almost falling from the effort, but he steadied himself like a drunk trying to find his way home. “I'm afraid of your ever cryptic nature. I'm afraid of that overwhelming power you possess. Never have I felt so small like I could be stomped out at any moment. After all… what chance does a cockroach have against a bear?” Tucker’s grin only widened. Now that the boy had seen his strength, what point was there in standing back up? But Kael didn’t stop. Step by step, he moved forward, refusing to let fear decide his fate. “I was afraid of myself,” he continued, “I was afraid of not being able to competently wield the power entrusted to me.”
38. Vir Ossium Revealed
【 SYSTEM UPDATE 】 ─────────── DIRECTIVE COMPLETED ─────────── EXP ACQUIRED: +10 TOTAL EXP GAINED: 25/40 Kael’s eyes widened as the words appeared before him. He should have felt a sense of victory, maybe even peace. After all, Tucker was down and the fight was over. Yet… he felt nothing of the sort. Instead, a cold realization sank deep into his chest, heavier than any blow he had endured. What followed next didn’t read like a reward, or a congratulation. The words appeared before him as if the universe itself decided he wasn't done. 【 SYSTEM NOTICE: TIME LIMIT UPDATE 】 Target: Vir Ossium Status: ACTIVE – MISSION ONGOING Time Remaining: 01:00:06 Equivalent: 1 hour / 60 minutes / 3,606 seconds Warning: Countdown irreversible. Failure will result in IMMEDIATE TERMINATION A cold pit of dread crawled up Kael's spine. He had thought the worst was over. He had thought he could finally breathe. But no. The system made it clear: his story wasn’t finished. “Less
39. The Throne of Greed
53:02… 53:01… 53:00… Kael drew in a sharp breath as the smoke cleared, only to find the throne completely empty. In that moment, he felt someone standing behind him and a cold presence crept up his spine. He spun on instinct, throwing a punch with everything he had. The force alone was enough to crack stone— —but it struck nothing but air. Vir Ossium stood to the side, having moved with such smooth precision that Kael hadn’t even seen it happen. Kael followed with a second strike, then a third, each punch carrying the last of his strength. And every single one missed. Vir Ossium did not block, nor did he counter. He simply moved the smallest amount necessary each time whether it be by tilting his head, stepping half a foot aside, or leaning back just enough for Kael’s knuckles to pass harmlessly in front of him. His motions were calm and effortless, like a man stepping around puddles in the rain. “You walked into my throne room,” he said evenly, “with that level of streng
40. A Devil’s Pitch
Just hearing the words triggered something in his mind. He didn’t know why the image appeared, but his vision was undeniable. The world in flames, just like he'd wanted it. With a past like his where kindness was rare and people looked out only for themselves, why shouldn't he want it? If the world was this cruel, then maybe it deserved to burn. Maybe if everything was destroyed, the bad would finally be gone. Maybe then, no one else would have to suffer the way he did. He wouldn't have to watch his sister walk to the market where she faced people's cruel stares. Maybe, someone would have shown mercy and helped a struggling girl. Just a few pennies could have meant the world, one small act of kindness could have gone a long way. She wouldn't have had to patch their clothes with sore fingers, or skipped meals so he could eat, and maybe, just maybe, she could have smiled, knowing that this time, everything would be okay. Tomorrow might have actually held… hope. If only the world
