CHAPTER 91
Mason’s penthouse was quiet, the city lights just starting to glow in the evening below. The calm was broken by the low murmur of voices. Mason sat with his lawyer, Peter, and two men in plain suits. They were private investigators.A folder to grainy photos and flight logs lay open on the glass coffee table. “Still no clear destination,” one investigator said, and pointed to a page. “The flight plan was changed last minute. We are looking at possible stops in Switzerland or Austria, but we can not confirm who he met.”Peter looked worried. “This is taking too long. He been out for days. We need to know what he is doing.”Mason’s phone buzzed with a calendar alert….Board Strategy - Clara. He ignored it. “Forget the trip for now. We need to focus on the next Lotus vote. We need something solid on Vance to sway the undecided board members. Something that makes him looks reckless, not just absent.”The other investigator leaned forward and asked in a low tone, “What about his company? W
CHAPTER 92
Clara stormed out of the penthouse lobby, with her heels hitting the marble floor like a countdown. The humiliating court notice burned in her mind. Mason’s smooth words of comfort now felt shallow and useless. She just needed air, she needed to hit something, she needed to get away. The under ground parking garage was cool, and smelled of concrete and exhaust. The sound of her own angry footsteps echoed off the low ceiling as she marched towards her sleek low car, with her keys rolling carelessly in her finger.“Clara Vance.”The sound came from behind her. It was a woman’s voice, calm, clear and so heavy that made Clara stop in her tracks. It was not a shout. It was a statement.Clara turned, with irritation flashing across her face and barked, “What?”A woman stood about twenty feet away, under a harsh fluorescent light. She was dressed in a simple elegant coat, with her dark hair pulled back into a tight bun. She held herself so highly that seemed out of place the grimy garage. Sh
CHAPTER 93
The library in Dante’s mansion was warm and quiet. Dante sat in a large armchair by the fire, with Daisy curled contentedly on his lap as he red fromma book about adventurous rabbits. Her small fingers traced the pictures, and for a moment, the world outside—the boardrooms, the spies, the lawsuits—did not exist. The door opened softly, and Elena, the housekeeper, stepped in, and said carefully, “Excuse me, Mr Dante. A Ms. Eva Stewart is at the door. She says she needs to see you.” Dante rolled his eyes slightly and nodded, then he replied calmly, “Alright, Elena. Send her in.” A moment later, Eva swept into the room, as a burst of energy in a stylish coat. Her dramatic entrance was immediately interrupted. “Auntie Eva!” Daisy cried happily as she sprang from Dante’a lap. She ran across the rug and lunched herself at Eva, who caught her with a genuine laugh. “Well, hello there, little miss!” Eva said happily, as she squeezed Daisy gently. “You have gotten so big! Are you

Clara pushed open the heavy front door of hwe mansion. She was tired and her head hurt from thinking too much. She dropped her keys on the marble table.“Annette? I am back,” she called out.“Already saw you coming.”Clara jumped in shock and turned around sharply to see Mason sitting on her living roomSofa, reading one of her magazines, with a relaxed expression on his face.“Mason! You scared me! What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be at your hotel?” Clara asked breathlessly as she tried to calm her beating heart.Mason smiled and put the magazine down. Then he looked at her and drawled lazily, “Darling, I own the hotel. I pay a manager to handle the day to day.” He looked at her closely and said softly, “you look upset. How was your day? Any news from the court?” Clara walked in and dropped her bag, then she replied evasively, “same old stuff. Lawyers talking. Bills coming. I am exhausted. “She rubbed her forehead. “I have a bad headache, I am going upstairs to lie down.”She

Dante was in his study, reviewing the latest Vertex trial data, when there was a soft knock on the the open door. He looked up to see Eleanor standing there, with a straight posture and sharp eyes.“Eleanor. Come in. Is everything alright?”“Everything is progressing,” she said softly as she stepped inside. Then she turned around and closed the door quietly behind her. “I need a favor, Dante. I need a lawyer. Caleb. I need him here, as soon as possible.”Dante dropped his tablet, surprised and said calmly, “Of course. But may I ask why? Are you ready to reopen your custody case? I told you, Caleb can start the paperwork immediately.”Eleanor smiled and shook her head. Then she said sternly, “Not yet. The foundations is not yet shaken. Mason is still standing so firmly. If I go to court now, he will use all his power to crush the motion, and I will look like a bitter ex wife causing trouble. No. I need to shake the ground beneath his feet first.”Dante leaned back in his chair and aske

The restaurant was filled with soft and dim lighting, with white tablecloths and silent clinks of expensive silverware. Mason sat at the best table in the corner, checking his watch with a flicker of impatience on his face. He hated waiting. Then, the entrance curtains parted, and a beautiful woman walked in. The air in the room seemed to shift with her presence. She was tall, with smooth dark skin that seemed to glow under the lights. She wore a dress that was both elegant and bold, and moved with the natural confidence of someone who knew her own power. Every head in the restaurant turned subtly, then quickly looked away, pretending they had not stared.Mason’s impatient expression vanished instantly, and a perfect, charming smile appeared instantly. He stood up as she approached.“Amara,” he said, his voice warm and welcoming. He opened his arms and hugged her politely.“Mason, I am so sorry I am late,” she said, her accent a calming blend of British and something uniquely her own.
CHAPTER 97
The organic grocery store was a place of abundance, it’s building all polished wood and filled with soft lighting. Eva was in the produce section with two of her girl friends, comparing the ripeness of avocados, in a low conversation filled with weekend plans and boutique gossip.“I am telling you, the heirloom tomatoes from the farmers market are better,” said Chloe, one of her friends.“But the convenience—” Eva began, then stopped. A familiar, icy voice cut through the calm air from behind her.“Well, Look who it is.”Eva’s shoulders tensed. She did not need to turn around to know it was Clara. She took a slow breath and placed the avocado back in the bin, and the turned slowly. Clara stood a few feet away, holding a basket which contained a single, expensive bottle of mineral water. Her expression was filled with pure, polished disdain.“Clara,” Eva said flatly.Eva’s friends, Sasha and Chloe, fell silent as they sensed the frigid shift in air around them.“Do not let me interrup
CHAPTER 98
Dante and Eleanor were waiting in the large sitting room. The fire was lit, which made the room feel calm and serious. Eleanor sat very straight in the sofa, with her hands folded tightly on her lap. She looked like a queen waiting for her council. There was a soft knock on the door. Elena, the housekeeper, came in.“Excuse me, Mr Dante,” Elena said quietly. “There are five gentlemen at the front door. They are asking for Ms. Carlisle.”Dante looked at Eleanor, and she nodded gently.“Please show them in, Elena,” Dante said. A moment later, five men walked into the room. They were all well dressed in serious suits. They looked like bankers or very important businessmen. Their eyes went straight to Eleanor. The oldest man with gray hair and sharp eyes, stepped forward first. “Eleanor,” he said, his voice warm with respect. “It is very good to see you again. You look well.”“Thank you, Robert,” Eleanor said, standing to greet him. She did not smile, but her face softened. “It has been
CHAPTER 99
Mason and Peter were in Clara’s living room. Peter had just finished telling a dry, insider joke about a rival businessman, and Mason was laughing. The mood was light, calm and untroubled. Then suddenly, the front door slammed open, hitting the wall in the process with a loud bang, and both men jumped.Clara stormed in, but not in her usual angry energy. This time, her face was pale, her eyes red-rimmed and puffy. Her makeup was smudged. She looked less like a furious socialite and more like a woman who had been publicly shattered.Mason’s smile vanished and he shot a quick, irritated glance at Peter, then hurried across the room as he schooled his face into a concerned expression.“Clara, my darling! What happened? Are you hurt?” He asked softly as he took her hands, which where were cold as ice.She shook her head as a sob caught her throat, then she croaked, “It was….it was Eva.” she hissed in frustration.Mason guided her to a sofa, and sat her down, while he perched beside her, w
CHAPTER 100
The supermarket was bright and quiet on a weekday morning. Dante pushed the cart while Daisy sat on the little seat, with her legs swinging from side to side. He held up a red shiny apple out to Daisy to see it.“See this one, little storm? It is called a Honeyscrip. It is very sweet. Should we get some for Elena to make a pie?”But there was no answer. Dante looked down. Daisy was not looking at the apple. She was staring, completely captivated, over his shoulder.“Daisy? Earth to Daisy,” he said gently as he turned around to look at what she is staring at.A few aisles over, a woman was selecting a bottle of olive oil. She was tall and elegant beautiful, smooth dark skin. She wore a simple but expensive looking linen dress, and she moved with a calm, sure grace. Daisy was mesmerized.“Daisy, it is not polite to stare.” Dante whispered.“But papa,” Daisy whispers back, with her eyes wide. “She is so beautiful. Lile a princess from a storybook.”The woman must have heard the soft voice
