CHAPTER 41
The old man walked in and took the podium. His strict and serious eyes locked on the students before him.“It’s been exactly one week since I gave you a project to work on. Like I told you that day, you’re going to submit it for assessment now,” Professor Lincoln disclosed.“We are going to start with Group One. The group leader of Group One, bring forth your work.”Adrian rose from his seat and walked to the front with a jaunty air. A calm and confident smile lit his face.“On behalf of me and my group, I am here to report that — we got a total of eighteen signatures,” he disclosed, and paused for a while, glancing at his listeners as they absorbed the news with stunned expressions.A satisfactory chuckle escaped his lips.“Among them include eight signatures from the top thirty business moguls in the country, five international celebrities, four acting senators, and…”He paused again before adding with a smug smile, “the Vice President of the country himself.”Once he finished speak

Darren frowned, his lips pressing into a thin line. He knew how he had worked hard to secure the signatures, how dare Adrian claim they were fake. “What do you mean the signatures are forged? All the signatures are genuine,” he snapped, his voice thick with concealed anger.Adrian shot him an accusing scowl and let out a sly chuckle. “What do you take us for—children? If you’re going to lie next time, at least think it through and don’t be so dramatic. You should’ve said five signatures; maybe then I could’ve forced myself to believe you.”Whipping his head around, Adrian stepped closer to the old man, whose face was twisted in confusion. In a persuasive tone, he continued, “Professor Lincoln, this deceitful student didn’t get a single signature last year. Now, all of a sudden, he claims to have thirty—including the president’s. The president! And we’re expected to believe they’re genuine? The only reasonable explanation is that every last one of those signatures is fake.”Darren bec

“This guy is such a boring liar. He even has the guts to show an empty camera to Professor Lincoln. The police should come and take this shameless dude away. He deserves to be locked away for eternity!” someone hissed.“Stop with the act, Darren. We all know there is nothing in that camera to show,” Clara said smugly. “Just accept your fate and prepare to go spend the remainder of your miserable life in prison. For someone like you, prison is heaven — at least there you will be able to get three square meals. So congratulations, convict Darren Wayne,” she taunted, causing her mates to giggle. But the amusement on their faces immediately dried up the instant Professor Lincoln switched on the projector. On the wall in front of them, a series of interviews displayed before their very own eyes — thirty clips covering Darren interviewing elites — from billionaire mogul Mr. Scofield to the president of the country.Silence swallowed the whole class. For a minute, the footsteps of an ant pas
CHAPTER 44
“Professor Lincoln,” Clara called. When she had the old man’s attention, she went on to whisper in a feigned, concerned tone, “Sir, it will be a stain on the university’s reputation when news gets out that a student of the institution forged signatures and made fake clips impersonating the president and other high-profile individuals. That is why you should call the school security to take him to the VC’s office and have him expelled before the police arrives. In that way, the reputation of the university will be saved.”Professor Lincoln’s face twitched. He caressed his white beard thoughtfully for a few seconds. After a while, he sighed and said in a hoarse tone. “Darren, you’ve been a good student, but what you’ve done is unforgivable. As such, I will have no choice but to do as Clara said and take you to the Vice Chancellor. It will be for the best if you’re not our student by the time police arrives to arrests you”.With that he removed his phone and called security. When he hun

A minute had passed since Darren ended the call with the president, but the class was still mute. How could they not be? The poorest student on campus casually called the number one citizen of the country?Even some prestigious billionaire individuals didn’t have the president’s contact. Even those that did, how many of them will the president excuse himself in a meeting with other world leaders to answer their calls? This only meant one thing— Darren was no ordinary person.Professor Lincoln was the first to break the silence. He gazed at Darren with a mixed expression of astonishment and confusion. “Who exactly are you, Darren Wayne?”Only after the professor asked this question did Darren realized how much suspicions he had drawn to himself. He gulped and hesitated for a while before shrugging, “I am Darren Wayne of course. The Darren you all know,” he said forcing a smile. Professor Lincoln lingered for some time, a doubtful expression on his face. “Then how did the president
CHAPTER 46
The naïve girl in front of the class was Rebecca. She was an unfortunate girl who happened to come from a poor background. She grew up without parents. The only family she had was her grandmother—a sick, bedridden old woman. To keep food on the table and be able to afford her grandmother’s medications, Rebecca took part time jobs. Every day after closing from school, while other students were resting, she was out working as a waitress in a local cafeteria or doing other menial tasks just to earn a few bucks. If not for the scholarship the university afforded to brilliant but unfortunate students like her, it would’ve been impossible for her to afford the tuition fee to school here. She and Darren were considered the poorest students in the class.Because of her background, most girls considered her unworthy of friendship and avoided associating with her. They ridiculed her for not being able to afford the latest wigs, clothes, handbags, and makeup, mocking her unfashionable lifestyl
CHAPTER 47
Once she said that, the students were thrilled and chorused at the same time “We will all come”.One student assessed the situation, “Why would I waste my time attending Rebecca’s low budget birthday when I can just go to Clara’s soap launching, enjoy all the expensive meals there, have a good time and still go home with good gifts?”The other students seemed to agree with him.A smug smile appeared on Clara’s face. She went on to brag about all the big names that will be in attendance and how lavish the event was going to be. Meanwhile, Darren was quietly observing everything from his seat. He stood up and approached Rebecca who was still crying with her head lowered. There was a pool of tears on the floor under her. For Rebecca who always had a smiley face to break down in tears like this showed just how much Clara and her friends’ insults got to her. Unlike the other girls, the poor girl’s dream was not diamond jewelries and expensive handbags, all she wanted was to have people c
CHAPTER 48
A short, cruel laugh escaped Clara. “The only place I’ll attend Rebecca’s birthday party is in your imagination. Even if I am dead and my corpse is dragged there, I will somehow wake up” she sneered. She shot him a confident look and continued smugly, “Mark my words—nothing on earth is going to make my soap launch fail. Adrian’s father invested a million dollars to ensure its success. He even secured me partnerships with some well-known cosmetic companies. Tomorrow I’ll be all over the news as one of the youngest cosmetic entrepreneurs”.Darren let out a quiet snort. “If I were you, I wouldn’t be so confident.”Before Clara could respond, a lecturer stepped into the classroom, instantly silencing all chatter. Students hurried back to their seats as the lecture began. When they were done with the day’s lectures, Darren was the first to leave the class in hurry. He had barely reached the entrance when hurried footsteps sounded behind him, followed by someone calling his name.“Darren,
CHAPTER 49
“Good evening everyone and thank you for being here to celebrate the launch of my cosmetic soap. This soap is created to nourish and make your skin smooth and beautiful like never before. For now relax and enjoy yourself as we await the arrival of the special guests. Remember, only those that stick around till the end of the event will receive the gifts Adrian promised”. All the guests were happy and enjoying themselves. Who would want to leave before the end of the event when there were all kinds of refreshments and entertainment. The launch was nothing short of what Clara had promised them. After her speech, Clara and Adrian were walking around the event and saying hello to their guests. The guests were congratulating Clara and giving props to Adrian for being able to organize such a fabulous event for his girlfriend. The turn up was massive, it looked like the whole school attended the launch. Who would want to miss out? When they were in the middle of the hall, Adrian removed
CHAPTER 50
Half an hour later, Rebecca and Rose arrived the restaurant in the golden Rolls Royce. She was now wearing the dress Rose had brought for her. Rebecca was still puzzled about her mysterious birthday party organization. On their way she tried asking Rose if she knew who was behind it, but even Rose herself didn’t seem to know. She was just a stylist hired by Harrington to make sure Rebecca appeared at the party dressed in presentable clothes. As it stood, the only person that could answer her question was Harrington.Immediately she stepped outside, a group of paparazzi surrounded her and began taking pictures. Just like how very famous celebrities are treated when they attend an event.A few Anchor persons rushed in and were asking her different questions. “Miss Rebecca Adams, how does it feel to throw the most lavish birthday party in the city?”“Tell us ma’am, how come you throw a multimillion birthday party and no one has ever heard of you? Are you a billionaire in disguise?”“…”
