Chapter 150
There was a long stretch of silence between the two of them before Greg finally asked. "Why?" There was no accusation in his voice, just a simple curiosity. One's path of magic was easiest and could go the furthest if one followed the school that they had the highest affinity in. This is what the healer had told him the day she tested him with the Azra bead. If one had a high affinity with magic, then they'd have a bit more latitude to ignore their main affinity and pursue another school of magic. Those that didn't have as high an affinity, were better off focusing on their main affinity rather than going after other affinities.Stepping out from his hands, the healer turned around to face him. "Before I say anything else, I want you to know that regardless of what answer you give in the end, I'll still do everything I can to help you become the strongest mage you can be. Your continued learning under me is not contingent on you acceding to my request. I'm not trying to force you into
Chapter 151
Greg was sure that the healer had noticed the shame in his eyes and the fact that Greg could suddenly no longer meet her gaze. She, however, didn't comment on it. Instead, she continued to speak. "The sigil is based on the one I came up with trying to heal myself. That's why, for the past month, I've been trying to work backward from this new sigil to try and find a way to use it to shift its purpose from creating a new mana core and pathways to restoring those that have been badly damaged. Unfortunately for me, I keep hitting the same impediment, no matter what I try. It's a closed loop. The mana pathways that I set up are a closed system that doesn't allow for any spillover as this new sigil does. No matter what I try, I've so far been unable to merge the two systems into one coherent whole. Think of it like a string. My original mana core and pathways require that I tie both ends together to make a closed system. This new system requires that I bring both ends close to each other,
Chapter 152
Rather than immediately answer the healer, Greg turned to his familiar. "Why are you so objected to this request? What would happen if I chose to pursue a school of magic I don't have any affinity with?" he asked. There was no accusation in either his voice or demeanor. Greg was genuinely curious to get Olivia's input on the whole matter. Although Greg could understand having an affinity with a certain school of magic, he couldn't understand why he couldn't succeed at another school so long as he put in the requisite effort. "Magic is a race, Master. As a mage, you'll be racing against two major factors. The first of the two, naturally, is time. You don't have forever to rise through the tiers master. The exact reason for it is as yet unknown, but between two mages of the same tier with the same affinity to a certain school of magic, the younger mage will almost always have an easier time rising to the next tier compared to the older mage. As such, even though rising to a higher tie
Chapter 153
Much as it galled him, he knew that the fifth tier was as far as the two women before him expected him to go. Both were much older and more knowledgeable than he was when it came to the subject of magic. Still, he was certain right to the core of his being that he wouldn't stop at the fifth tier. Whatever it took, Greg would rise to the very top. "What stops me from learning the healing arts from you, without committing fully to the path of a healer? Greg asked. "I mean, why not just learn what I need to know to help you safely dissolve your mana core and pathways before resuming my path as an elemental mage?" He asked. "There are some small issues that mixing different schools might cause but nothing so major that it can't be dealt with," The healer replied. "However, should you choose to resume being a mage of the earth element, I would be powerless to help you the same way that I would if you were to remain a healer. Other than some general information that you can easily get from
Chapter 154
Shalia stood in silence beside the entrance to the infirmary. The sun was slowly sinking in the horizon to the west and any time now Roka would be exiting the infirmary to head home. Anyone looking at the calm expression that she had on her face, wouldn't be able to guess at the storm of emotions that roiled within her. It wasn't often that the Town-head's daughter didn't know how to feel about someone. That insufferable boy, however, had managed to worm his way into that category. At first, Shalia had thought the boy to be beneath his notice. In fact, the only reason she'd even known his name was because of how often his mother came to ask after him while he was in the infirmary. That indifference, however, turned to dislike when she was forced to put up with his ugly face as a fellow student of the healer. His only redeeming quality, as far as she was concerned, was the fact that he didn't try to get her to date him like some other commoner toads in the town had. At the very least,
Chapter 155
It was in the privacy of her room that the first sign that something was off revealed itself. Shalia had been furiously plunging her index and mid-finger into her tight and wet love tunnel, imagining Bran pinning her against the wall, lifting one of her legs and fucking her like a wild animal, all the while, his eyes never leaving hers. His gaze boring into hers, marking her soul as his the same way he was marking her body. Just a few weeks prior, the image would have been enough to send her over the edge in a little over five minutes. Now, however, she had been at it for almost fifteen minutes and yet, her orgasm remained elusive. All of a sudden, without her intending for it, the image in her mind shifted. Suddenly, instead of the perfect face of Bran, Shalia was looking up at a plain wooden mask and the cold eyes of the scarred boy behind them. There was no passion in these new eyes like she'd imagined with Bran. His eyes, instead, were those of a predator that had marked their pre
Chapter 156
After two months of doing it repeatedly, Shalia didn't even have to think about it before a warm smile crossed her lips. There was a time when the smile wouldn't reach her eyes. Over time, however, the line between pretense and reality had blurred and not even Shalia herself could tell whether she was genuinely smiling at him or not. "Good evening, Roka," She greeted. A smile crossed the boy's lips as he turned to her. Shalia could tell he was smiling despite the wooden mask because of the motion of his cheeks. The part that she couldn't explain was the fact that even without seeing it, she was sure it was a genuine smile. Perhaps it was the fact that the boy had already shown that he felt no need to be kind or nice to her. If he didn't want to, then he simply wouldn't. End of story. Besides, their agreement didn't require him to smile. Only Shalia was expected to smile and be nice whenever they met. Their agreement said nothing at all about how the boy was expected to behave. "A
Chapter 157
Shalia couldn't help but frown at the crass language employed by the boy in asking the question. With the rules set in place by Roka, however, she wasn't allowed to snap at him for it. Unable to castigate him for his foul language, Shalia could only ignore the vulgarity and focus on the actual question itself. The more she thought about the question, however, the louder her silence sounded in her ears. True enough she was the child of her parents, but why was that even something to be proud of? It wasn't like she had in any way contributed to this state of things. She wasn't even alive at the time that they came together. And the fact that she was the result wasn't in any way under her control. She just happened to be born to parents who happened to be in charge in the little town they were in. She could have just as easily found herself as the daughter of commoners if her parents' situation was different. She was a cub standing in the shadow of its parents and thinking that it was gre
Chapter 158
Greg had a small smile playing on his face even as he hummed a tune from his former life. There was no rush to his steps as he walked through the noble district in the city of Torrin. That isn't to say that he was walking aimlessly. He had a plan. The only reason he wasn't rushing was because he'd played this dungeon so many times that he knew where his targets would be and how long they would be there. And given that he was already so close by, he saw no need to rush. Despite the toll that every dungeon dive had on his soul, the dungeon is the only reason that Greg has thus far been able to keep from being swamped by everything he was being taught by the healer. The amount of information one needed to imbibe just to be a basic-level healer in his teacher's eyes was mind-boggling. From different types of herbs, both poisonous and restorative. To different types of beasts and their anatomy. To different types of ailments, their symptoms, prognosis, and different methods of curing them
Chapter 159
The merchant's face was pale as a sheet of paper as eyes moved from the dead bodyguard to Greg who was still sporting a chilling smile. While he was currently unarmed, both the merchant and his wife had seen just how quickly he'd summoned the bow and dispatched the bodyguard. His hands were empty but both the merchant and his wife couldn't help but feel like they had a nocked and drawn bow aimed right at their faces. At any point, the madman could easily summon the bow once more and end their lives. When the man spoke, the Merchant was both chilled and relieved at the same time. The relief came from the fact that the merchant had believed that the young mage was only here to kill. That he seemed to be looking for the position of bodyguard meant that at the very least, he wouldn't kill them. Why someone like him would be interested in the position of a bodyguard, the Merchant couldn't puzzle out. Still, it was a chance to come out of this alive. The reason the young mage's words chille
