Chapter 250
Greg had made sure to put away the corpses before calling on them. Still, there was no hiding what had happened in that room. Pale-faced, the servants had worked quickly to wipe both the floors and walls clear of any blood. Greg had made certain that everything was left spotless before he'd come to join Zarra inside the bathhouse. There was a while of silence after he'd said this before Zarra once again worked up the nerve to speak. "So... so what now?" she asked. "Now, we get ready for the party?" Greg spoke calmly as he walked into the pool. A look of confusion crossed Zarra's features. "What party?" She asked. "The one that the mayor will be throwing tonight," Greg replied after taking a seat beside the woman. Zarra didn't resist when Greg pulled her onto his lap so that she was straddling him with their crotches dangerously close to each other. "Given that you are nobility, I'm certain that you got an invitation!" He stated without the slightest shred of doubt. The reason Greg
Chapter 251
Greg kept his eyes closed, leaning back on the soft leather seats of the carriage as it moved through the noble district toward the Mayor's home. It was finally happening. After months of failure, he was finally going to attend the Mayor's dinner party and beat the dungeon. And yet, rather than excited, Greg just felt drained. It now occurred to him just how unprepared to beat this mission he had been on his previous attempts. Had he somehow made it into the party on one of his previous runs, he would have likely stood out like a sore thumb. The best he could have hoped for was to be kicked out. But given the way the nobility seemed to look down on the commoners, Greg doubted that the Mayor would have taken very kindly to one trying to sneak into his party. Chances are that he would have met a rather unpleasant end in the city's dungeons, or whatever passed for prisons in Torrin. Already knowing that the day would be a busy one. Greg had pinned Zarra against the wall of the bathhouse
Chapter 252
Even after repeatedly playing this same dungeon for three months straight, moments like these gave Greg pause. Moments in which the people within the dungeon seemed to somehow cease being mere characters in the dungeon and take on a life of their own. Moments like now in which, Zarra ceased just being 'the merchant's wife' and became a real person expressing their feelings in a way that Greg couldn't just brush off. A small part of him just wanted to give in, abandon the mission, turn the carriage around, and spend what little remained of the day with her. After all, there would be countless more opportunities to attempt the dungeon in the future. He, however, suppressed that desire. He had worked on this for three months straight and failed every time. He wasn't about to squander the one time things seemed to be going right. "I made a promise at my sister's grave," Greg answered in an unyielding tone, using the backstory he'd already fabricated to turn her down. "I won't stop until
Chapter 253
While Greg found most of the social norms of the nobility to be a mix of pretentious and arduous, he actually liked this one. While his backstory was a pure fabrication, Greg hadn't been lying when he said he was here to observe. First, the faces, then the information of as many people in attendance as possible. It wasn't for any nefarious reasons but simply because Greg was already preparing for future runs. The people in attendance were all possible avenues to gain access to the party in future dungeon runs. Before the end of the party, Greg planned to have at least five more options for how he would beat the dungeon."Likewise Allen," Zarra answered with a smile. Technically, the nobility didn't need to know the names of the servants let alone return any compliments given. Zarra, however, had said that she found it made the servants more positively predisposed towards you when you made the effort. To Greg, this was as obvious as saying twice two made four. Given what he had seen of
Chapter 254
"You'll have to forgive Levia. Years of teaching my daughter not to interrupt me when I'm talking to my guests have all been for naught, I'm afraid," The mayor spoke up. Though he was smiling and his tone light, Greg could tell that there was an undertone of actual disapproval from the man. The spider queen, however, clearly didn't care. With an indifferent demeanor, she shrugged the comment off. "Oh, I just wanted to greet my host before I ignore you for the rest of the evening. I wouldn't want it said that I lack the social graces of the nobility," She stated before turning around and walking off. It was a short interaction barely half a minute long. In that time, the woman had barely spared Greg a glance. Whether she had truly been late and hadn't heard about the fact that he was a mage, or she truly didn't care, Greg couldn't tell. Either way, he was glad for her departure as it allowed him to relax. It wasn't that Greg was afraid of the woman, instead, it was fear of inadverten
Chapter 255
Out of everyone present, three in particular held Greg's interest. More than likely, his next attempt at this dungeon would involve one of them. At the top of his list was a potioneer. Lady Andreya was the only other individual in this dungeon that was even tangentially involved in magic, that Greg had encountered. From what Greg had gathered of her backstory, she wasn't an actual mage herself, but she had learned the art of potion-making from one. She could only make the weakest of potions seeing as the more advanced ones required precise mana control, of which she didn't have any. Given the fact that this was a city full of mundane humans, however, what potions she did make were enough to make her one of the most sought-after potioneers in the city. This was especially true because, like his teacher, Lady Andreya was very exacting in the standards of her work. She would sooner die than allow subpar work to be associated with her name. Part of the reason Greg was so drawn to the po
Chapter 256
There was a moment of silence from the woman and Greg could tell that this wasn't the answer she had been expecting. The moment of shock passed and Greg felt the hand tighten around his shoulder even as the point of the dagger was pressed painfully into his back. "Do you think that I won't dare kill you?" The woman asked with a tone of dangerous amusement in her voice. "Oh, there is no doubt in me that the spider queen is ruthless enough to kill me," Greg answered her, calmly. Once again, the woman seemed to have been caught off-guard by his words. This time, he didn't allow silence to follow his words. "However," Greg's voice turned colder than the heart of a glacier as he continued. "Do it only if you are certain you can make it out of this hall with your life," He cautioned, his voice promising death should she keep on her current course. As someone who was the head of a ruthless gang like the Spider gang, Greg knew that she would have seen right through him if he was bluffing.
Chapter 257
As for his trepidation, it stemmed from the hidden quest. Greg had been so focused on passing his main mission within the dungeon, that he hadn't even considered the possibility of there being hidden missions. Looking at it, however, Greg couldn't help but break out into a small cold sweat as he realized just how close he'd come to failing it. With a sigh of pure relief, Greg found himself thanking all his lucky stars that he'd somehow managed to achieve it despite his recklessness. Simple as the task may have seemed, Greg was keenly aware of just how easy it would have been to fail this objective. Even outside of his encounter with the spider queen and the blonde thief, Greg was certain that the only reason he'd managed to make it through this dungeon unharmed was because he'd had Zarra at his side to guide him through the intricacies of interaction with the nobility. If Greg had somehow made it to the party through some other means and didn't know everything that the woman had taugh
Chapter 258
The more times you attempt a given path in a specific dungeon, the more difficulties will be thrown your way." "Take the present dungeon for example. For three months you've been trying to get to the Mayor's dinner party through the Merchant and his wife. This was your path. Every time you used this path, the dungeon learned from you and made the next attempt just that bit harder than the previous one. For example, if you had tried to seduce the tailor's wife this time, you would have almost certainly gotten caught by her husband, leading to complications that would have ultimately led to complete failure in this attempt," She said with a small smile. "To give you another example, consider the thief. The first time you met her, she ran into you. The subsequent times, she avoided you. When you finally tried to physically stop her..." "She killed me," Greg stated, understanding dawning on him. "Exactly," Olivia answered. "Simply put, the dungeon isn't there to just give you reward
Chapter 259
Greg's eyes fluttered open to find his teacher seated across from him. Her eyes were closed and a small milky white pearl was pressed up against her temple. One who didn't know his teacher well would be tempted to think that she was sleeping. Greg, however, could see the look of deep concentration on her face. Given his past life as an earthling, when Greg came across the word manual, he'd expected a book of some kind. Perhaps a thick, ancient-looking tome, perhaps a sheaf of parchments loosely bound together, maybe even a scroll of some kind. What he had gotten instead, was the small white pearl currently in his teacher's hands. An attuned memory pearl. That's what Olivia had called the thing. She'd instructed him to run his mana through it. Once Greg had done so, she'd informed him that the pearl was now attuned to his mana signature. That, without him using his mana as a key, it would be impossible for someone else to access what was inside the pearl. With that out of the way, Gre
