Chapter 60
Roughly an hour before Greg appeared before his uncle... Greg's movements weren't hurried as he walked after Nolruk. The gap between him and his cousin had grown to roughly a hundred meters. Greg had allowed this because they were still in the vicinity of the town. Even at the edge, there would be too many people who'd notice it if he ran after his cousin. If anything happened to his cousin, and people noticed him running after him right before it did, it would be really hard to evade suspicion. At least with this much distance between them, someone would have had to have been keenly watching the two of them to pick up on the fact that he was following his cousin. Even after his cousin disappeared into the tree line, Greg didn't speed up. He calmly maintained the same speed as he continued to follow. It wasn't until he was past the tree line that things changed. Greg had already lost sight of his cousin by the time he got to the trees. This, however, didn't bother him. Channeling Ol
Chapter 61
It may be a tier one potion, but even third-tier mages have difficulty resisting its effects,' Olivia spoke up in Greg's mind. "For a whole day after taking this potion, not only will one be compelled to answer any question that they are asked, they'll also be unable to lie," She explained. "The only thing you have to take note of when using this potion is that just because someone thinks something is true doesn't mean that it is," She cautioned. "For example, if someone truly believes that the sky is red, the potion won't make them say blue, it'll compel him to answer in accordance to what they believe to be true, that is red," His familiar explained. Without wasting time, Greg bought the potion from the magic store. He wasn't looking to learn the truths of life from his cousin. All he needed to know was what his cousin knew. With that, he'd at least be able to form a plan of attack. The potion took ten seconds to materialize inside his storage ring. As soon as it did, Greg didn't

His cousin winced at the hard tone of Greg's voice, still, he nodded. "Ever since he got the staff and started gaining new abilities, it's like he started withering," Nolruk relayed. "He has grown thinner, his hair is falling out, his eyes are sunken and the lines on his face seem more prominent," He laid out. "The man used to seem so big and strong," His cousin went on. Something about the tone of his voice left Greg with the impression that this was more of an unconscious statement rather than a direct answer to his question. "Make no mistake though," Nolruk continued, turning to look up at his cousin. "My father is now a lot more powerful than he ever was before," He declared. 'Fuck!' Greg could feel his unease spike sharply when he heard Olivia curse in his head. The familiar seemed to be pacing around in whatever mind space she usually disappeared into whenever she entered his glabella. 'What is it?' he immediately asked through their mental connection. 'Well, there's some
Chapter 63
'The reason they are given this designation is that they are no longer in the normal progression of the mages that rely on mana and their understanding of magical principles to grow more and more powerful. Tier zero is less of a stage of being a mage and more of a death sentence for those that get it. The reason for this is simple. Human beings, no matter how powerful, are not built to handle the kind of power deities have. Sure, one who was initially a mage will last longer as a tier zero mage than one who wasn't, and one who was a higher tier mage will last longer than one who was at a lower tier. The end result for all of them, however, is that their bodies, and sometimes even their minds, eventually break down as a result of being forced to handle a kind of power and knowledge that they were never meant to handle,' She explained. 'Think of it like a candle. The flame a candle produces isn't that hot or bright. But it is precisely because of this that a candle can last long. If the
Chapter 64
A whole host of questions were running through Greg's mind. Was this botched ritual the reason he was able to cross over to this world? Was that entity on the other side a deity, or just a powerful being? Was this entity the one that sent him through the doorway into this world? Or was it something that happened naturally? If, it was indeed the first case, then had that deity been watching him all this while? And if so, what were his motivations? Was he planning to use Greg to gain more power? Or was this just some form of amusement for him? Was this entity even a 'he'? It felt like a storm had been let loose in his mind and try as he would, Greg just simply couldn't unravel even the smallest of questions that this revelation had raised. Knowing that it would be pointless to let himself be distracted by questions that wouldn't help his present situation, Greg forced himself to turn his attention back to his cousin."How did I end up in the infirmary? " Greg posed. From all that he'd h
Chapter 65
If a dark crawler manages to inject the venom into your brain, then there is nothing that can be done for you other than death,' She declared. 'Not only will your whole body be subjected to a kind of mind-bending pain that you can not even begin to imagine, but all your worst nightmares will be brought to life around you. You'll be dragged into the deepest darkest part of your mind where all the worst things you can imagine are. You'll be forced to live in a warped reality where, you see all the things that you fear, hate, avoid, or are ashamed of the most, for every single moment of the rest of your living life. The worst part is that neither one interferes with the other, the pain won't stop you from hallucinating and the hallucinations won't stop you from feeling the pain,' She explained. The stuff is so bad that in most places it's an illegal substance to have. In the right markets, however, a single vial of it is worth more than your whole town and everyone in it combined,' Olivi
Chapter 66
Greg could feel his brows rise higher and higher the more he heard his familiar explain. 'Wait, but won't the burden of mana expenditure be higher the more copies we make? Can you support ten different drains of your mana for the whole battle?' Greg asked. As good as what Olivia was saying sounded, it wouldn't mean anything if mid-battle all the copies stopped moving, or worse still, disappeared because they couldn't sustain the mana supply that they required. 'Scrolls are not magical items, master,' Olivia replied with an amused smile. 'Unlike magical items, scrolls are usually already infused with all the mana that they will require to execute the function for which they were made,' She explained. 'Other than a little mana to activate the scroll, a scroll doesn't need anything else to work,' She stated. 'Unlike magical items which can be used over and over again, however, no matter how powerful they are, all scrolls are one-use items,' She explained. 'Once a scroll is used, there
Chapter 67
In truth, this wasn't where Greg wanted to be. After the plan had been settled and his duplicates made, Greg wanted to rush back home and protect his family and allow his copies to do all the work of attacking his uncle. Olivia, however, had informed him that this wasn't a wise idea. By using the hive scroll, they had given themselves the same weakness that his uncle had. In the same way that his uncle was the weakest link when put together with the dark crawlers, Greg was now the weakest link on his side. This wasn't because he was exceptionally weak or anything. It was simply because if anything happened to him, all his copies would be like marionettes with their strings cut. They had come up with a great plan that had a great chance of success, but for better or worse, for it to work, they couldn't risk losing the original Greg, and as such, he was forced to avoid both battlefields. Greg had sent one of his copies running towards the town. Greg had bought shoes of haste for every
Chapter 68
Greg was a bit conflicted even as he moved through the forest. He had succeeded in killing his uncle at last. After a long and fierce struggle with the man, he had taken his head off. Greg had no regrets about it. Had he wished for things to turn out this way? No. Was he happy that things had turned out this way? Also no. But did he regret killing the man? Not in the least. His uncle had of his own volition chosen to make himself Greg's enemy by killing his father, planning to kill him, and even threatening his family in the process. There was no coming back from that. The man had to die! The reason Greg was conflicted was because of his cousin. Greg had always known at the back of his mind that if he was the victor, he'd have to deal with Nolruk in some way. The problem was no matter how he questioned the guy, it was clear that he had never held any malice towards either him, his father, or his family. The only reason he had stuck around his father and did his bidding was because he
Chapter 69
Part of Greg had been worried that it would be too cruel to make the son believe that he'd killed his father. From the smile that had crossed Nolruk's lips, however, Greg doubted that even being made chief of the whole town would have made him that happy. Besides, it wasn't like he had any better ideas. Letting the boy go would have been risky, and he wasn't comfortable with killing someone just to silence them. Making the boy believe he was the killer was a grey area that Greg would have to make peace with. Not only would he not worry about being accused of murder, the only witness, his cousin, would be the one most interested in hiding anything to do with his father's death. Right now they were moving through the forest towards the place where the fights had taken place. After all, the scene of the crime had to be cleaned up. If they left his uncle's beheaded corpse where it was and some other hunters came across it, it would lead to a bigger issue than Greg wanted it to be. Just
