Chapter 21: The Final Truth
Romeo's Point of ViewI left Emma standing in the vault, and ran off to the helicopter. The trip back to the mountain compound was a twelve minutes flight, yet it was hours long. Everything that I had learned was spinning in my mind. I was a grandson of a man who had made an empire. I was a brother of a woman whom I supposed was my wife. My mother was a woman with whom I had nothing in common. And now my grandfather was dying with one more secret to say to me.The helicopter touched down in the pad of the compound and I rushed towards the medical wing. At the entrance, Martin was waiting on my behalf. He looked exhausted. He resembled that his shoulders had been bearing the burden of the secrets of my grandfather too long."He's awake," Martin said. "But he's very weak. According to the doctors, you have perhaps five minutes.I went in the room where my grandfather was lying. He was as ugly as death sitting next to him waiting to get leave to carry him away. His breathing was shallow.
Chapter 22: Blood and Betrayal
Romeo's Point of ViewI couldn't move. I couldn't breathe. This female in the doorway was my mother. My mother and she was expected to be dead. My dead mom who had defended me at the age of three. My dead mom who had died twenty-five years before."You're alive," I said. The words were tiny and fragmented falling out of my lips.I have been alive all this time, Diana Black thought. She even held the gun at my grandfather. Your grandfather got me away. He gave me money and new name and never to come back. He said to me that, had I loved you, I should have forgotten about me. He informed me that it was preferable to have a dead mother than a living one that would threaten you.My grandfather was having difficulties breathing. He still had his hand on mine, but his grip was becoming weaker. "She's lying," he said. "She's a criminal, Romeo. She's a killer. Never trust her a word of mouth.I am not a criminal as I would like to be, Diana said. She could speak coldly, not cruelly. That was
Chapter 23: Fire and Forgiveness.
Romeo's Point of ViewThe structure vibrated. Ceiling tiles began to drop down on us. The metal box which Victoria had tossed was beeping and smoking, a death timer. I was perhaps thirty seconds prior to the initial echo of the explosion that happened within the compound.I took my grandfather and picked him off his bed. Diana stood in the paralyzed position before the window and had witnessed her sister disappearing into the air with her helicopter. She resembled a woman who had come to realize what betrayal really is."We have to move!" I shouted at Diana. "Come on!"She jerked out of her surprise and rushed up to me. The three of us, mother, grandson, and the man who had made an empire, ran to the door. The hallway was chaos. Alarms were screaming. The people were going everywhere. The whole composition was disintegrating.Martin was coming through the smoke. He took the other hand of my grandfather and helped me to carry him. "This way!" he yelled. there is an emergency tunnel in
Chapter 24: Face to Face with Destiny.
Romeo's Point of ViewIt was a twenty-minute walk back to the compound. The mountain was burning. Smoke was up in the sky like a funeral pyre. I heard explosions at a distance, and this showed me how much there was foul play in lies and deceit. On arriving at the entry of the head office edifice, Victoria was waiting. She was present in the main lobby and had armed soldiers behind her. The explosions had given her a burn on the face. Her garments were rags and greasy. Her eyes, however, were cold and calculating."Romeo," she said with a smile. "I knew you would come back. You are too much like your grand-father. Too worried about the lives of other people. Too willing to do away with yourself over strangers."Where are the hostages?" I asked.Safe at present, I suppose, Victoria said. In the vault on the bottom floor they are chained up. You can save them should you be able to pass me and my troops. But I do not think you can do it.She waved her hand, and her men lifted their arms.
Chapter 25: Redemption or Destruction.
Romeo's Point of ViewI had a choice to make. The surroundings were crumbling around me. Victoria was managing to stay behind the rubble, screaming. And I was left just sixty seconds to live until all the structure collapsed, and covered us both with rubble. She would have been left by my grandfather. All the atrocities she had committed would have made my grandfather allow her to die. It would have been the serving of righteousness on the part of my grandfather. But I wasn't my grandfather.I started moving the rubble. Bit by bit I tossed steel and concrete aside. My muscles burned. My fingers were torn at blunt edges. I continued to move however, since I did not allow her to die. I had no right to allow another human being to perish due to all these wars and deceptions.A hand belonging to Victoria was showing through the rubble. I grabbed it and pulled hard. She emerged with a gasp of air, with a broken and bleeding body. I got her on her feet, and both of us rushed to the exit wit
Chapter 26: The Ghost Emerges
Romeo's Point of ViewI ran to the mountain compound where my grandfather was dying. I was with Emma right beside and she was clutching papers she had discovered of Victoria. The publications justified all that the young woman had told. They produced birth and death certificates and hospital records which narrated a second Edward Martinez. The latter Edward was said to have died thirty years ago. But yet were all the signs that he was still alive. The evidence all testified that the man whom I believed to be my grandfather had murdered the first Edward, and assumed his name. On a great, great, great lie everything I knew was founded and the entire empire was a house of cards."How can this be?" I kept asking. How do you expect my grandfather to do this? "Maybe he had to," Emma said. We were on our way when she was going through the documents. Perhaps his brother was a lunatic. Perhaps his brother had some dreadful plan. Perhaps that was all that your grandfather could do in order to s
Chapter 27: The Mother's Sacrifice
Romeo's Point of ViewDiana dropped on the ground and blood spread on her chest. The bullet had passed right through her shoulder, but that did not make it any less horrible. My mother had just sprung before a bullet that was aimed at me. It was the sacrifice of my mother, with whom I had just then learned to have been alive.I grabbed her and she did not hit the ground. Her blood was warm on my hands. Her eyes were looking up at me, in an expression of peace and sadness and love all at once."I'm sorry," she whispered. I am sorry I have been so long. I feel bad that I have done the revenge on you. But I'm not sorry about this. I'm not sorry about saving you."The original Edward was looking at the gun in his hand as though it were not his. Just like he could not believe what he had just done. He was aiming the gun at a lady. A Black woman. His own blood relative. A man who had been one of his allies."Diana?" he said. His voice was lost and disoriented. You are expected to be on my s
Chapter 28: Exposure and Awakening.
Romeo's Point of ViewThe world exploded. An hour or so after the uploading of the AI, all news sources began to cover the story. Each government was seeking to be answered. All individuals who had access to a phone were seeing how the secrets of Phoenix Empire were spread throughout the internet like wildfire. Business deals. Briberies. Corrupted elections. Profitable wars that were initiated. Everything was exposed.I was sitting in a safe house and I just saw it on TV. Emma stood beside me and was holding my hand. Martin was talking to the phone, trying to organize lawyers and federal agents. The whole power structure that my grandfather had created was falling down even as we spoke. We are receiving calls, I was told by an official, all over the world. "They want to meet with you. They want to negotiate. They would like to know whether you will carry the operations of your grandfather or you will close them.Destroy them, I said immediately. "I want everything shut down. I wish th
Chapter 29: The Other Half
Romeo's Point of ViewI was staring at myself. But it wasn't me. It was a person who resembled me only because he had different eyes. His eyes were empty. His eyes were those of a machine which had been trained to kill since the time it was made."You're a clone," I said. I had a steady voice and my hands trembled.I am a better version of you, said the clone. He entered the room gradually. Every move was accurate and fatal. "I don't have your doubts. I don't have your conscience. I do not share your affection to people who attempted to ruin you. I am all you ought to have been.Emma stepped behind my back, and attempted to reach the door. However, the clone waved a hand, and federal agents outside the room suddenly stopped talking to one another. They weren't answering. They weren't moving. Something was very wrong. The agents are unconscious, said the clone. "They're not dead. Yet neither are they conscious. Which means it's just us now. Me and you and the girl. Like your grandfathe
Chapter 30: The Clone's Choice
Romeo's Point of ViewThe gun was rising. Emma widened her eyes with fear. I had seconds to react. I had a few seconds to save her life or see her die in the hands of a form of me who I never requested to be created.I moved toward the clone. I have never been faster in my entire life. The training of my grandfather came into force and I bridged the gap between us in a moment. I seized one arm of the clone and withdrew the gun out of Emma. The clone was fighting against the programming. He had pain and frustration in his eyes. His body was convulsing against him. He was behaving like a puppet to his programming."Fight it," I said to him. "Fight the programming.""I can't," the clone gasped. He made me powerless to struggle with it. He intended to make me his slave to the end.The pistol dropped out of the hand of the clone. But then something bad still occurred. The body of the clone began a convulsion. His eyes rolled back. His mouth slackened with a dumb scream."What's happening?"
