Sixty-four on the first descent, which was the fastest first-descent we'd had. Maybe's earlier theory — that each settlement the Hollow gave back was also the Hollow practicing giving back, the same way each story circle made the next one easier — was holding. The mechanism of return was becoming more cooperative with each site, not just because our technique was improving but because the Hollow itself was developing, in whatever the Hollow's equivalent of muscle memory was, the pattern of allowing passage. My mother said: "It's learning to open.""Or it's choosing to," Perhaps said, from beside the well that reflected only mountain and sky."At some point those are the same thing," my mother said, and Perhaps smiled with the corner of her mouth that she used for things she agreed with more than she let herself show. Two days for Shihong. The central realm looked different from the road. Not because it had changed — it hadn't, or not in any way the eye could identify, the same walls, the same gate, the same market outside the eastern entrance where a woman had started selling sandcastle charms for three coppers and had since, apparently, expanded her operation to include badly-thrown pottery and deliberately off-key wind chimes that made a sound like someone learning to play music on purpose. The market had tripled in size. Half the stalls were selling things that were wrong in ways that were clearly intentional, and doing brisk business at it, and the woman at the center of it was, from a distance, visibly doing very well. What was different was me. The road had been long enough that something had happened to me on it that I didn't have a name for yet, the way certain experiences take the walk home to finish settling into their actual shape. She looked up with the expression of a woman who has spent fourteen years finding answers to questions her employer needed before he knew he was going to ask them. "He doesn't ask for help," she said. "He asks questions that assume the person he's asking has the answer. It's a very old habit." She paused. "But yes. He's asking questions that assume I have the answer. Which I do." She returned to her notes. "The answer is that you don't make a non-hierarchical practice legible to hierarchical systems. You make it visible to individuals within those systems and let the individuals carry it home. The practice travels through people, not structures. You don't have to translate it. You have to introduce it.""I'll tell him that," I said."He'll have arrived there himself in about an hour," she said. "But you can tell him anyway. He'll appreciate the corroboration."---The Reaper came to find me that night, which was becoming a habit for both of us — t

The Reaper came to the beach at dusk, which was unexpected and also, I realized on seeing it, the only appropriate arrival time for something that had spent three thousand years not having preferences and was currently practicing having them — dusk was the most specific hour, the most distinctly itself, the hour that could not be confused with any other hour because of the specific quality of what it did to light, which was take the day's ordinary illumination and reduce it to the precise few colors that each specific thing most essentially was, before the dark arrived and removed all distinctions. The Reaper stood at the top of the sand, looking at the beach, at the six of us, at the current iteration of the sandcastle, which was the seventh and which Lin Mei had quietly been making sturdier than I intended it to be because she had, apparently, decided that making it sturdier was her small contribution to a project she disagreed with on structural grounds but supported in principle.
