Chapter 261
By the terms of their contract, Greg hadn't really done anything wrong. He was only obligated to provide her with resources based on how useful she was. And given that he hadn't called on her since, he wasn't under any obligation to give her anything. She, however, was entirely dependent on him for progress in her path of ascension. In the short term, she might be willing to bear it. If Greg kept at this long term, however, he was at best asking to be abandoned as she sought greener pastures elsewhere. At worst, the girl could start conspiring against him, thinking he was trying to stall her growth. Greg, who'd initially been planning to investigate by himself, had immediately shifted gears and accepted her help. Getting her to help had proven to be a real boon as she had shown herself to be even more calculating than Greg would have given her credit for. When she learned that they'd caught an infiltrator, her immediate suggestion had been to see if the victim knew the assassin. The
Chapter 262
Greg pushed open the door to the room Reina was being treated in, careful to be as quiet as possible when doing so. It was almost impossible to believe that the girl sleeping peacefully on the bed had been knocking on death's door just a few short hours ago. Greg was already impressed by the miracle his teacher had pulled off. He, however, couldn't shake the feeling that he wasn't fully comprehending just how impossible the feat was. By all indicators, the young woman on the bed should have been dead. The assassin hadn't skimped out when getting a poison powerful enough to drop a third-tier mage in a matter of seconds, and yet, the girl was now sleeping peacefully on the bed, her breathing steady, and her skin no longer the metallic grey it was when Greg last saw her. Despite pulling off what most would have likely considered impossible, his teacher didn't seem at all pleased even as she sat regarding the young woman. Raksha was seated on the floor near the foot of the bed, but his

Greg stepped onto the deck of the airship, walked over to the railing, and looked out at the jungle below. With human activity having largely been eliminated in the black zone, nature seemed to have done what it usually did and taken back over. About ninety-nine percent of the life he'd seen in this black zone was trees of one kind or the other. Unlike normal trees, however, all the trees in this place didn't grow straight up, but rather, diagonally. Twisted as the space inside this zone seemed to be, one wouldn't have to guess which direction the center was as every tree pointed in one direction. Even the branches that were supposed to be growing out to the sides, also grew parallel to the trunk, pointing in the same direction. Greg got the impression that if the trees weren't firmly anchored on one end, they would have slowly been pulled toward the center of this black zone. Back inside the dungeon, while watching the earth mages raise the amphitheater, Greg had found himself thi
CHAPTER 264
"That... that is a baby?" Lothar, who was standing at the railing looking down, voiced the very thought that had crossed Greg's mind when Morpheus told him that the gigantic snake below was actually a baby. Unable to think of a better reply, Greg gave the same reply he got from the deity. "Considering that these things can grow large enough to squeeze whole planets between their coils, yes, what you are looking at is a baby world serpent," he replied. Morpheus had then gone on to congratulate him for being a mortal who had seen a titan-class creature and lived to tell the tale of it. Greg, however, left out that last bit as it would have felt a bit pretentious for him to repeat. Greg had gathered all of his allies on deck along with the airship's captain for them to brainstorm a way out of the pickle they found themselves in. Olivia, his teacher, Lothar, Calyn and Athalia were all currently standing by the railing looking down at the massive serpent below with various looks, rangin
Chapter 265
The changeover between Greg and Morpheus had only been for not having to waste any time convincing either Athalia or Captain Tharion that he wasn't telling tall tales. With how costly it was in terms of longevity whenever Morpheus took over, the deity didn't hang around for long. He didn't need to. Looking at the two who were yet to move even a single muscle, the truth of his words had been more than established. Given that they would be working closely together in the years to come, it's inevitable that Athalia would have eventually learned of Morpheus. Letting her know was thus not much of an issue for Greg. Captain Tharion, however, was another matter. Greg had been torn on whether to bring the older man into the loop or not. Greg had been comfortable just letting the man think that he was probably the rich young scion of some powerful family. Not even the fact that they'd ended up in a black zone had pushed Greg to want to tell the man everything. This last hurdle, however, had
Chapter 266
At first, Greg found himself being skeptical of the claim, thinking that Morpheus was just exaggerating for effect. But then, he remembered the sight of Morpheus' mother. When she had first reached through his clone into Greg's mind and pulled him into her presence, there had been a split second in which Greg found himself looking at two sun-sized orbs that turned out to be her eyes. That single moment of exposure had been enough to cause Greg a soul fracture. He had no idea where in the rankings of power a fully-grown world serpent landed, but if it got anywhere close to the powers Elders held, then perhaps the claim wasn't as far-fetched as Greg initially thought it was. "You... you are linked to a deity!" Athalia finally spoke, cutting into Greg's explanation of events, her voice still shaky. Greg could tell that, for her, it wasn't just that she had encountered a deity and lived to tell of it. On top of that almost unbelievable fact, she'd also come face to face with her great-g
CHAPTER 267
Greg turned back to Lothar. "I wouldn't be surprised if the world serpent has already been here for more than half of that time. There is simply no outwaiting this creature," Greg said. "Aren't we all ignoring the most obvious solution?" His teacher questioned, her gaze on him. "If the deity you are linked to is powerful enough to draw in the mana that makes up this zone, shouldn't it be child's play for them to simply wrap this airship in their aura and take us out of the black zone altogether?" The healer asked. Greg had to fight the urge to let out another sigh. He too had asked the same question of Morpheus. "Once again, I am the bottleneck," Greg replied even as he reached into his storage ring and produced an oath-keeper stone. Stretching out his hand, Greg held it out to Olivia. "Throw this as hard as you can toward the back of the airship," he instructed. There was some confusion on the face of Olivia along with others seated around the table. The familiar, however, wordles
CHAPTER 268
Greg hadn't even considered this possibility, but now that it was mentioned, he couldn't help but think it plausible. "Could be. Your guess is just as good as mine," he stated with a shrug, before turning back to his teacher. "This is why what you are asking for is impossible. Just because the force pulling us toward the center isn't doing so violently, it doesn't mean that it is by any means an easy force to counter or overcome. Like I said before, the most dangerous aspect of this zone isn't the tier zero mage that was the conduit, but the deity whose will was channeled through them. Simple as pulling this airship out of the zone might sound, in practice, it's one deity fighting against the will of another deity with me caught in the middle. Had we been close to the edge of the zone when we discovered what was going on, then perhaps we would have had a chance at escape. Unfortunately for us, the assassin waited until we were well and truly inside the black zone before making her mov
CHAPTER 269
There was no crown on her head. Nothing about her was extravagant or contrived in any way. She didn't have on her person any gold or jewels as you might expect from a monarch. Other than being high-backed, the chair she was seated on was a wooden one no different from anyone else at the table. The dress she had on was mildly suggestive as it somehow emphasized her feminine form without hugging it in a crass manner. Other than that, however, it was just a plain dress the same shade of white as the scales of the beast below. The only things one might even consider ornamental in their own peculiar way, were the three small, pearl-white scales on the outer corner of each of her eyes. Small and shaped like arrowheads, rather than seeming unnatural on her human guise, they only seemed to enhance her exotic look. And yet, she exuded such raw authority, it was almost physical! Greg didn't know if it was her icy demeanor, the straight-backed way she sat, or the predatory way she seemed t
CHAPTER 270
With her already aware of and paying attention to them, that plan was already dead in the water. Should she wish to, she could decimate the entire ship right now, and there was very little Greg could do about it. He didn't even bother to ask Morpheus about it. Greg already knew that if they were attacked, the deity wouldn't waste even a smidgen of his power trying to protect the mortals onboard. Morpheus cared nothing for his family, allies, or crew. Instead, the deity would do all he could to escape. Should that prove impossible, then he would fight without holding anything back, damn whoever was caught in the fallout. He knew this, and there was zero doubt in Greg, that she knew this too. She hadn't been trying to clarify how old she was. She was telling him that she had all their lives in the palm of her hand. "Give us a moment," Greg spoke up. Though his gaze never left the woman the others seated around the table immediately understood that it was to them that he was speaking
